Rewrite so one side has ONLY x terms
If x2 has a coefficient (other than 1), divide both sides by that coefficient.
Complete the square on x ( ½ b)2 and add that amount to both sides.
Write as (x ± h)2 on the ‘x’ side.
Multiply all of both sides by the number you divided by in step 2 and simplify.
NOTE: Steps 2 & 5 are only needed of not already 1x2 ± ...
Example
Convert y = 3x2 – 12x + 1
to vertex form.
Now you try
Convert y = -5x2 + 40x - 3
to vertex form

1. y = 6x2 + 84x + 4
2.
y = 5x2 – 90x + 7
3.
y = 3x2 + 12x + 17
4.
y = x2 – 6x + 4
