After-School ICU Procedure What does ICU stand for? ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit, just like in the hospital. When students have missing assignments, their learning is affected and their grades may become sick. Treatment at Ipswich Middle School is now After-School ICU. Students learn and are held accountable for the quality of their work. The purpose of ICU is to impress upon students the fact they are responsible for the completion of their work. A quote from the ICU book says it all: “When you give students a zero or accept low quality work, you are letting them off the hook.” Reasons for After-School ICU include but are not limited to: Academic: th th th Grades 6 , 7 , and 8 : Late homework, incomplete work, or poor quality work: ICU will be assigned when a second incomplete or late assignment occurs in any subject and for each subsequent late or incomplete assignment. (Example: 1 math, 1 spelling, 1 science, and 1 reading incomplete assignment) A teacher may assign ICU to do poor quality work over. After School ICU Procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. An ICU notice and email or phone call will be sent home to inform the parent of the problem. Parents are to sign the notice and send it back to school the next day. If a student is asked to take an ICU Notice home and the student fails to return the signed form the next day, an additional day of ICU may be assigned. If the form is not returned signed, the teacher will call the parents and arrange the dates for the ICU time to be served. Students will be assigned to ICU from 3:15 PM to 3:45 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. After-School ICU will be held in the Study Hall room or Commons. If a student skips an assigned ICU period for any reason other than illness, an additional ICU will be assigned. If the student continues to skip ICU there will be a conference with the administration, parents and student to correct the behavior. All students must pre-arrange transportation home. Students are to report to ICU with assignments and study materials. If students do not report with needed materials to begin ICU, then they will receive 30 minutes of detention. Students are to be quiet and on task during the entire time they attend ICU. Students are not allowed to go to their classrooms during After-School ICU, but teachers will be allowed to come to students who need help. Misbehaving during ICU will result in After-School Detention or In-School Suspension. Students will have to complete work in ICU before attending extra-curricular practices and events. Any student on the ineligible list will be required to attend two after school tutoring sessions for that current week’s list. ICU will be used for any extra school activity such as a pep rally, movie, field day, special day, etc. This will include students on the ineligible list, also. If a student is on the ICU list on the day of an activity he or she will not be allowed to attend the special activity on that day. After-School ICU Notification: 1. Teachers should complete After-School ICU Forms, make a copy for their files, make one for the Extended Day Director and give one to the parent. We will email or call parents to notify them of their child’s missing assignment.
