defence force family members currently working away from home, please take the time to look
at it (located next to the friendship chair). Last week the students painted the signpost
camouflage colours. The inspiration behind this project is a signpost which was made by
Australian and NZ soldiers working at a base in Iraq, to remind them of ‘home’.

MOTHERS’ DAY CLASSIC RUN/WALK
Big “Shout Out” to all those hardy Jerra souls who braved the rain and took part
in the Mothers’ Day Classic on Sunday morning. Thanks to Mardi Croke for her
organisation and the P&C for joining in. There was lots of pink – as we can see
from the lovely Patterson girls pictured – as people got into the atmosphere of
the moment and had a good time.
Thank you to all who supported this community event and represented Jerra
School. Well done!
JERRA GYMNASTS JUMP INTO SUCCESS
Over the term break, two of JPS’s talented and hardworking gymnasts, Bella
Cawse and Kelsey Hall, qualified to represent the ACT. The girls have been
competing in the ACT State Championships across 4 meets over March and
April this year. The girls both bagged their share of medals across the
competition.
The final comps on 9 and 10 April saw both girls take a place on top podium to receive a gold medal for their teams from
th
Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club. Bella showed grace and determination to take out 4 individual place overall at Level
6. She has qualified to head off to Caloundra QLD in June to represent the ACT at the State Team Challenge.
nd
Kelsey Hall saved her best for last, her performance on the last 2 days of competition earned her 2 individual place
overall at Level 7. Kelsey will travel to Melbourne in May to represent ACT in The Australian Championships.
The Jerra gymnasts are all great friends; it’s lovely to see them encouraging each other and enjoying their sport.
Congratulations girls and we wish you all the best.

Missing school was a joy and definitely worth it as we all enjoyed our excursion and still learnt a lot. The galleries we visited were the
Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Australia. Wow! They both had heaps of amazing art works. We decided to visit these
galleries for our democracy unit last term. I’m sure Year 5 learnt lots of different things (well hopefully).
This is what I learnt at the Portrait Gallery: It wasn’t hard to get lost in the galleries. I also learnt that there are some very nice
paintings in there and you also have to be Australian to get your art work in that gallery. At the Nation Gallery of Australia, I enjoyed
how the guides told a story about the Aboriginal pieces of art and how they were created. Personally, my favourite piece of art was
Monet’s Waterlilies; unfortunately, not everyone was able to see it. I believe that it was good because he didn’t draw/shade the
picture before he painted it, and it was fun trying to do Monet’s Waterlilies in class in art.
The questions I wondered were:
1. How old is the Portrait Gallery?
2. How old is the National Gallery of Australia?
3. Why the government chose that particular part of Canberra?
I would like to know more about Monet’s Waterlilies. I would love to see the colourful chandelier, which is up during exhibitions, and
unfortunately we did not get to see it this time but it was amazing. If I did not know about the colourful chandelier, I would like to see
Monet’s waterlilies again. I highly recommend going to both of these places and it is very convenient because they are right around
the corner from each other.

PS: I thought the tour guides were very nice and helpful I know that because if you had a question, they would
quickly give you the answer you wanted.
The Gallery Excursion-Year 5
nd
On Monday, 2 May, Year 5 enjoyed an excursion to the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Australia as a part of our
HSIE unit on democracy. We were lucky enough to have tour guides for each of our groups. This helped us understand what the
paintings meant and why they were painted.
The first gallery we went to was the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. It was here that I learnt that self-portraits don’t have to be
painted on canvas; they can be sculptured out of metal or many other ways. My favourite painting there was of Amelia Earhart. This
was my favourite painting because she empowered women by being the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic solo. We also
saw a portrait of Captain James Cook. These portraits were both linked to our HSIE topic of democracy.
We then had lunch on the luscious green grass outside the gallery. After we ate, we got to have a little play.
The next gallery we visited was the National Gallery of Australia. We saw two amazing works of art. The first one was a knitted
policeman. It had bullets, a tie and a gun attached to it .The artist based it on her father. At this artwork, I learned that you can change
what you think about the piece of art by changing what it is made of and the colours, e.g. if you didn’t appreciate that person you
could make it out of wire and if you were fond of the person, you might decide to use wool. The second sculpture we saw at the
gallery was called Eulogy. It was a realistic man holding a blob fish. The sculpture of the man was made of silicon, the average male
clothes and real human hair. The man was so real that when we walked in, we thought it was a man posing! The blob fish he was
holding had pinkish colours in it and was made to look like it was in pain. The blob fish is becoming extinct so that is why that artist
created that piece of art.
Next we had recces on the grass. We boarded the bus and we were on our way home. It had been a great day. I would definitely like
to see some more realistic sculptures that have great stories behind them. But I do have one more question, how did all these
amazing artists discover their amazing skills that have created such beautiful artworks that we were able to see?

CANTEEN NEWS
What an amazing result from the Finger Bun Fundraiser on Monday 9 May with 100% of the profit going
directly to the Cancer Council!!!!! The total number of finger buns ordered was a whopping 660!!!!!!!!!! Thank
you to all those families who gave additional donations to the Cancer Council, which totalled $61.50!
The grand total that Jerrabomberra Public School will be donating to the Cancer
Council is $1051.50!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just a reminder that if your child is going on an excursion, there will be NO lunch orders for those classes
on that day if the excursion is during lunchtime. Last Friday, Year 6 attended an excursion and there were still 8
lunch orders on the day. As lunch is normally at 11am, we then had to keep these lunch orders hot until 1.30pm
when Year 6 returned from the excursion to eat their lunch.
Please ensure that all lunch orders are in before the morning bell at 8.55am. This really assists us with
tallying all the orders, especially on a Friday when there are often 200 lunch orders to prepare.
Please note the change of date for the Canteen Meeting. It will now be held in the staff
room on Monday 16 May at 1.30pm. All are welcome to attend. We would really appreciate
your input and ideas.
