Administration
Dr. Mary Retterer has spent over 30 years in community college education
with 13 of these in administration. She spent 17 years teaching business
management and accounting, two years in instructional administration, and
11 years as a president. Her Ph.D. is in Community College Leadership
from The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Retterer has only served at two colleges without inter-collegiate athletics. She founded the athletics program at Pima Community College’s East
Campus, bringing both golf and football to the college. The Pima Storm
went on to win a national bowl game at the end of its fourth season.
Dr. Retterer believes strongly in co-curricular programs, including intercollegiate athletics, as a way to draw students into higher education that
might otherwise not have the opportunity to attend college.

Academic Advisor
Dr. Jane M. Harmon is Cerro
Coso’s Interim Vice President, Student Learning, and comes to the
college with many years of community college experience around
the country. Dr. Harmon wishes
the Cerro Coso Baseball Team a
great season. Go, Dawgs!
As Cerro Coso Community
College’s Vice President of Student Services, Jill Board is an avid
supporter of athletics at our college. She believes that providing
an athletic experience to our students is beneficial to both athletes and the student body in general, and that it provides our
community with a positive means
of entertainment and opportunity through the athletic camps.
Dick begins his 15th year at Cerro
Coso College and serves as Athletic Director, Head Baseball
Coach, and Physical Education
instructor. Coach Adams’ “Dawgs”
have been very successful through
the years; and as an Athletic Director Dick has been very active
in the athletic program
fundraising efforts. Dick’s wife
Wendy works at the college as an
Educational Advisor.
Being a successful student athlete requires tremendous effort
and committment. I applaud all
of the young men and women
who put forth this effort every
season. I would also like to commend the athletic staff for the
support they bring to the Cerro
Coso teams every year. I want to
wish all of them a successful and
rewarding experience as their seasons begin.

*Foothill Conference Champions
Dick Adams begins his 15th year as the only head coach of the Cerro
Coso Community College Baseball Program. He completed last season by
reaching the 300 Century Club. His career record now stands at 310 wins
and 253 losses (.551) as the Coyote Skipper. Coach Adams led the 1999
team to Cerro Coso’s most successful season so far at 31-14, then
followed that year by leading the 2000 Dawgs to a repeat of the conference championship, giving them back-2-back honors as the Foothill
Conference Champions in both 1999 and 2000. Each championship
allowed the Coyotes to host the First Round State Playoffs. Dick was
named the Foothill Conference Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.
A native of Southern California, Dick played at Camarillo High School
where he graduated in 1972. He later played two years at Moorpark
Junior College and two seasons at California State University, Northridge,
helping the latter to the 1975 NCAA Division II Western Regional
Championship and a berth in the College World Series. The following
year, he pitched himself to a 10-5 record and earned All-District 8
honors. Following his senior season, Dick signed with the California
Angels and played three years professionally before elbow surgery brought
an end to his career as a player.
His coaching career started with a stint at Granada Hills High School in
Los Angeles where he assisted for three seasons. His stay there was
highlighted by an LA City Championship. He later moved to the college
ranks, coaching single seasons at Moorpark Junior College and at
California Lutheran University. Prior to his starting the program at Cerro
Coso, Coach Adams served as Assistant Coach at Carson City High
School in Nevada, helping the Senators to a pair of trips to the Nevada
State Tournament. He was later Head Coach at McQueen High School in
Reno, before landing a job as an Assistant Baseball Coach with the
University of Nevada, Reno in 1991-1992.
Dick, Wendy, Amie, and Betty Adams
Dick received his Associate of Arts Degree from Moorpark College in 1974,
before earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education from California State University, Northridge in 1977, and a Master of Arts Degree in
Educational Administration from the University of San Francisco in 1997.
Dick is the Department Chair/ Instructor of Physical Education and the
Athletic Director at Cerro Coso. He currently serves as the Foothill Baseball
Coaches Representative to the California Community College Coaches Association. Dick and his wife Wendy reside in Ridgecrest, with Wendy working for the college in the Counseling Office where she takes on the tough
duties as Academic Advisor to Athletics and as an Adjunct Instructor. Their
daughter Amie will celebrate her eleventh birthday in May. She attends
Richmond Elementary School. Dick’s daughter Meghann (23) lives and
works full-time in Las Vegas, Nevada, Markus (17), Junior, plays Varsity
Basketball and Baseball at Carson City High School in Carson City, Nevada.

2007 SEASON PREVIEW
Dick Adams is optomistic as the Dawgs enter 15th season of Cerro Coso baseball
By Tim Allen
Staff Reporter
As it enters its 15th season, the Cerro Coso baseball program hasseen many changes. From teams that tore the
cover off the ball to the strong-armed units that dominated from the hill. There have been two conference titles and
some down times. The field itself, the Dawg Yard, has continued to grow and improve as time goes by.
And as with any collegiate program at any level, players come and go with each new season and even the occasional
grading period. But through it all one thing has remained the same since the program’s inception — head coach Dick
Adams. “We feel like we are really revitalized,” said Adams, reflecting on the last few years and looking toward the
2007 campaign. “We think we are really on an upswing.”
The upswing comes after a series of setbacks — some small and others large — that have caused the Coyotes to
falter in recent times. Many of them have been out of the program’s control. But with the dawn of
a new season ahead, Adams is optimistic that the talent is there to contend for the Foothill Conference Championship
and a postseason berth. “This is an athletic group,” Adams said. “We made it over the first
set of hurdles (eligibility checks) and now we’re ready to go.” Adams will be joined by assistant coaches Joey Davis
and Dan Wallace and their trainer Kim Kelly.
INFIELD
The Coyotes return two players with experience behind the plate, only one of which will probably see any significant
time there. The front runner for the job is sophomore Kyle Hanson. “He’s a winner from a state championship team,”
said Adams. “The pitchers like throwing to him.” Hanson, from Henderson, Nev., finished 2006 with a .364 batting
average and a .424 slugging percentage. Cameron White, another second-year player, is also skilled at the position.
But Adams has seen that he needs White’s bat (.500 in 30 Conf. AB in 2006) in the lineup and is looking to find a way
to get him there as often as possible. When looking at the circumstances,
Adams may use White as a designated hitter or first baseman. “He’s a vocal leader and a very mature player,” Adams
added. “He’s really come along in the fall and we are expecting big things from him.” Rounding out the catching corps
is freshman Brian Peat, who Adams says swings a heavy bat. Mark Sayas will anchor the middle of the infield at
shortstop and figures to see the bulk of the playing time at the position. He was the Coyotes’ top hitter in ’06 (.367)
and was a first-team All Foothill Conference player.
Cody Rieger and Luke Heil figure to be the top competitors for the spot at second base. “He is like Pete Rose,” said
Adams of Heil’s hustling style of play. “He’s a very hard worker.” Rieger figures to have the edge in experience, having
played backup at second last season.Andrew Hill will be working out the duties at first base with White, and may see
some time at third base as well.“He’s a good competitor and brings a great attitude to the game,” said Adams.Third
base could be the one position filled by committee for Cerro Coso, at least in the short term. While Hill and Heil are
candidates at the hot corner, Ryan Fischer and Garrett Argyle are also in the
hunt for a starting job there. Argyle is a player that Adams already knows up front will be gone after the 2006 season,
as he will go on a church mission. That not withstanding, Adams still thinks like he can make a solid
contribution to the squad this year.
Fischer is a solid infielder, but may become a member of the bullpen and his arm may be needed should the Coyotes
get in a pinch on the mound.

2007 SEASON PREVIEW
OUTFIELD
Freshman speedster Frederick Bello figures to start the year in center field. With the kind of speed that Adams
attributes to Bello, and if he can hit for a solid average, he could challenge for the school’s single season and all-time
stolen base records. But those are goals to be checked well into the year. “He’s in the same mode as a Micah
Williams,” Adams said, comparing him to a standout from 1994-95. “He’s a very good base runner and can
cover a lot of ground in center. He should anchor us very well out there.”Joining Bellow will be Jon Proesl in right, a
Mojave High School graduate and the returning starter in center from a year ago. Adams
noted that his speed is good as well, but just a shade behind that of Bello. “He’s got some real thunder in his bat,”
added Adams. “We expect him to do a lot of damage in the three-hole for us.” Left field will be a proving ground of
sorts for Cerro Coso, as three players figure to vie for time in that position. Sophomore Tyler McAllister is the returner
who may get the initial start. He has a quick bat and a good arm, but could see time on the mound as well.
That will open up opportunities for freshmen Royal Good and Nick Parker, with Parker a red shirt from last year’s
squad. He is coming off shoulder surgery last year and looks to be healthy heading into the 2007 season.
PITCHING
Jessie Zuber is the top returner on the pitching staff for Adams and the Coyotes. He finished 4-3 last year in what
proved to be a tough year for Cerro Coso overall. “He hits 88 to 90 on the gun regularly,” Adams said of his projected
starter for the Friday opener against Ventura. “He has good velocity and breaking stuff. I really expect him to lead the
way this year.” But Adams also noted that he has a number of pitchers that could be diamonds in the rough, and who
may just prove to be a big surprise for opponents as the season progresses. McAllister was the team’s closer in
2006, and sports a strong arm. Adams noted that how much he pitches and plays the field may depend
on the resiliency of his arm when worked hard over a long period of time. Cody Ingram (RHP), Kyle Tullis (RHP) and
Clint Williamson (LHP) are three potential starters that Adams sees as having the talent to help
the Coyotes, but who will have to learn the art of pitching at the JC level as the season progresses. The Cerro Coso
starting rotation will get some help as the Foothill Conference schedule gets close in March, as Brett Cobbley (LHP)
and Jamie Cameron (RHP) should be over mild shoulder injuries by then.
Cobbley, like Williamson, is a crafty lefthander that should prove a tough adversary for opposing batters. Cameron is a
power pitcher with a nice slider.
The bullpen figures to be headed by Fischer, to whom Adams attributes a fastball with good movement and solid
breaking ball. He may also see some time at third base. Burroughs graduate Wes Oliver will see time in a relief role
as well. He is currently developing a sidearm, sinker-style of delivering the ball a la Dan Quisenberry and Kent
Tekulve. “He’s working on the release point so that his fastball and breaking ball come from the same place,”
observed Adams. “If he gets that down and he could very tough to hit.” Argyle will also see some time in relief when he
is not in the field. Garrett Weber and Ryan Gorzitze will also fit into relief roles for Cerro Coso, but both are recovering
from injuries and may not be ready until conference play. Joe Amato and Heil will serve as pinch hitters and utility
players for Adams. “They are both scrappy guys that can find a way to get on base and help us when we need a lift,”
Adams said. Cerro Coso will have opened the season in the Bash at the Beach tournament in Ventura Friday and
Saturday, taking on host school Ventura in the opener. Saturday will see the Coyotes play a
doubleheader in single games against L.A. Mission and Oxnard. Cerro Coso will take to the road until Feb. 20 when
the team returns home to the Dawg Yard to take on El Camino JC at 2 p.m.

About Cerro Coso
The College in General
Cerro Coso Community College is one of three colleges in the Kern Community College District. The College is charged with the responsibility of
providing educational opportunities for the widely separated desert, mountain, and valley communities within a sweeping 18,000 mile, four county,
region of eastern California.
Cerro Coso’s service area includes a population base of just over 85,000
individuals. The College officially opened in the fall of 1973, and within
the year began expanding its service area to include the present region.
Cerro Coso, as an institution, has a long history of valuing students as
individuals with unique capabilities and needs and a teaching-learning
process that motivates students towards excellence.
Eastern Sierra College Center
The Eastern Sierra College Center serves the communities of Mammoth
Lakes, Bishop, Big Pine, Lone Pine, Independence, and Death Valley, as
well as other locations in Inyo and southern Mono Counties. A comprehensive educational program with both day and evening classes is provided, including courses for transfer, general interest, general education,
and occupational programs. College Centers are maintained in the communities of Bishop and Mammoth. New facilities were recently completed
in 2004 in both Bishop and Mammoth.
Indian Wells Valley Campus
The 320-acre Indian Wells Valley Campus is located in the upper Mojave
Desert in the community of Ridgecrest, with a population of 28,000.
Ridgecrest is located 130 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 120 miles
east of Bakersfield. The Indian Wells Valley campus features a new stateof-the-art Learning Resource Center and computer facility. Also new to
the IWV campus is a solar photovolatic field that serves the main building, saving the college hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in electricty
costs. Ridgecrest is expected to grow by up to 10,000 residents over the
next several years due to national military base realignment. The local naval base, the Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, is a major economic
entity in the community of Ridgecrest.
Kern River Valley Campus
The Kern River Valley Campus serves the communities of the Kern River
Valley from its campus at the Kern Valley Plaza in Lake Isabella. Students
in Lake Isabella, Wofford Heights, Kernville, Mt. Mesa, South Lake, and
Onyx can find easy access to the campus via public and private transportation. The campus offers both day and evening classes to provide educational alternatives including two-year programs leading to transfer to the
university level, two-year AA and AS degrees, short-term vocational programs, single-course options which may lead to immediate employment,
G.E.D. certification, personal enrichment classes, and professional upgrade
classes. Kern River Valley Campus offers testing, counseling, advisement,
and financial aid assistance, which can enable students to meet their educational goals.
South Kern Campus
The South Kern Campus serves the communities of Edwards Air Force
Base, North Edwards, Mojave, Boron, and California City. The program
is administered from Edwards Air Force Base where the college maintains
an office provided by the United States Air Force. Associate degree programs in General Education, Social Science, and Business are offered
through the South Kern Campus. In addition, a variety of computer application and special interest courses are available. The college’s Industrial
Safety program is coordinated through this campus. A new facility is in
the planning phase for California City, as well as expanded ITV connections at Edwards Air Force Base.
CC Online
CC Online, Cerro Coso Community College’s virtual campus, currently
offers nine associate degrees online, the general education courses necessary to meet transfer requirements to a four year institution, and student
support services. CC Online has an international reputation for excellence
and provides an extraordinary opportunity for those too distant from a
community college or too involved in business or family to pursue higher
education during traditional hours. In addition to online classes we now
offer numerous Interactive Television (ITV) courses, many of which can
be accessed from any of our campus centers. ITV allows students from all
of our campuses to attend a single class simultaneously in state-of-the-art
facilities.
For more information about CC Online please access our website located
at http://cconline.cerrocoso.edu or by telephone at 1-888-537-6932.

Athletic Facilities
Baseball Field - The “Dawg Yard” was constructed in 1993 and has undergone
many changes and improvements throughout its 15 seasons of play. Through
the vision of Coach Dick Adams and the muscle and sweat of the Dawgs, the
Dawg Yard continues to be Cerro Coso’s field of dreams.
Softball Field - Completed in 2002, the Women’s Fastpitch Softball field has only
seen one season of play to date. Due to budget cuts in California, Cerro Coso
College has temporarily suspended the Women’s Fastpitch Softball program.
Gymnasium - The Raymond A. McCue Athletics Complex was dedicated in 1992.
The gymnasium is the home of the Lady Coyote’s Basketball Team, as well as the
various Physical Education facilities and athletics staff offices. Aerobics, Circuit,
and Weight Lifting rooms meet the needs of both athletes and general students.
Tennis Courts - Previously located to the north of the main building, expanded
and improved tennis court facilities are now located on the west end of the
campus as part of the athletics complex.
Racquetball Courts - With an average of 350 sunny days a year, the racquetball courts are available year-round.
Track & Field - The Cerro Coso track and field have been used by many local
youth teams, as well as regional Special Olympics competitions.

About Ridgecrest
Ridgecrest
A Great Place to Live and Work
Population
Ridgecrest is a community where you'll find old-fashioned family values
and a low-stress life-style, as well as unexcelled technical facilities and expertise. We're located in the Indian Wells Valley, a high-desert setting
framed by four mountain ranges, including the majestic Sierra Nevada.
Our town is known for its beautiful skies, excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and closeness to nature. Serving as the trade and cultural center for
more than 57,000 people, Ridgecrest boasts big-city amenities while still
maintaining a small-town atmosphere. Whether you come here to work,
to retire, or to play, Ridgecrest is a place you'll love to call home.
Ridgecrest has a population of about 28,000. The community is also a
shopping and service center for smaller populations in China Lake,
Inyokern, the Rand Mining District, and unincorporated areas of the
Indian Wells Valley for a total population of around 35,000. People of
all ages, races, and ethnic origins live here harmoniously.
Location
Ridgecrest is in the Indian Wells Valley, located in California's Upper
Mojave Desert. The valley has an elevation of 2,400 feet and is encircled
by four mountain ranges - the Sierra Nevada on the west, the El Paso
Range on the south, the Argus Range on the east, and the Coso Range on
the north, Ridgecrest is about 130 miles northeast of Los Angeles, 120
miles east of Bakersfield, and 110 miles north of San Bernardino.
Community Profile
Accessibility
With its convenient location near two major highways (U.S. 395 and State
14), Ridgecrest functions as the center of commerce for a large geographic area, as well as the gateway to the recreation and tourism
opportunities of the High Desert and the Eastern Sierra. Just 10 minutes
away from Ridgecrest is Inyokern Airport, which offers several passenger
flights daily to Los Angeles International Airport, plus next-day air cargo
service via Federal Express and United Parcel Service. Enterprise and
other rental car services are available at the airport with prior reservation.
Climate
The climate of the Indian Wells Valley is dry, with mostly mild temperatures. Cool evenings and low humidity offer relief from the midday heat
of summer. The average daytime temperature during the summer season
is 105o, with the average nighttime temperature only 51o. During the
rest of the year, the average daytime temperature is 83o, with a 26o
average nighttime temperature. During the past ten years, an average of
4.5 inches of rain has fallen on our valley.
Advantages and Assets
One major advantage to life in Ridgecrest is the low cost of living. We
have the lowest commercial and residential real estate prices in California,
shopping and recreation at reasonable prices, and average commute times
of less than 10 minutes.

Coyote Baseball 2007
About Ridgecrest
The Indian Wells Valley has:
- A small-town life-style with clubs and activities for every age
and interest.
- A skilled, highly educated technical work force.
- Housing costs that are among the lowest in the nation.
- Proximity to the spectacular scenery and recreational pleasures
of the High Sierra and Death Valley National Park.
- Easy access to major metropolitan areas.
- Lower than average labor costs.
- Links to institutions of higher education through Cerro Coso
College's modern telecommunications and Internet-based systems.
Inyokern Airport & Industrial Park
Nearby Inyokern Airport provides passenger flights daily to Los Angeles
International Airport. An industrial park located at the airfield has land
available for development.
Coso Petroglyphs - Dating between 1,000 and 3,000 years old, the Coso
petroglyphs are part of one of the largest concentrations of Native American
rock art in North America.
Naval Air Warefare Center (NAWC)
Our community has an array of sophisticated technical assets available
through arrangement with the Navy at China Lake. After the end of the
Cold War, Defense Department demands on China Lake's laboratory and
range assets declined. The private sector may now arrange to use many
of those irreplaceable assets for non-defense applications.
Red Rock Canyon State Park - Picnic area, scenic drive, rock climbing, hiking,
repelling, and much more.
- High-tech equipment and facilities, many of them unique to
China Lake.
- 1,777 square miles of highly instrumented test ranges.
- World-class technology and expertise transferable to the private
sector.
Trona Pinnacles - The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires,
some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake basin. The
Trona Pinnacles have been featured in many still-photo shoots, commercials, and
films, including Star Trek - The Final Frontier, Planet of the Apes, and Dinosaur.

Christmas with the Dawgs
Christmas in the Dawg Yard
Part of the Dawg tradition at Cerro Coso is the Annual Christmas Tree
and Wreath sale where Coyote Baseball players lend a hand in selling and
delivering trees and wreaths to supporters. Members of Cerro Coso and
the community enjoy participating in this annual event and look forward
to picking out one of the many beautiful trees each year. Tax deductable
funds raised by the sale go to support the Coyote Baseball Program and
have played a significant financial role towards the building of our press
box, snack bar, batting cages, and purchase of the scoreboard. All of the
Coyote athletes and staff thank the members of the community and
college for their support.

Support the Coyotes
Who, What, Why
At Cerro Coso College we are proud of those athletes who boldly wear
the blue and silver into athletic competition. Cerro Coso College Baseball
takes great pride in providing our student-athletes with the best possible
experience during their time in our program. Our baseball season consists
of extensive Fall and Spring seasons where we compete in 60-65 games.
Our goal is to play quality programs to help prepare us to win the tough
24 Foothill Conference games. In order to reach our goals/preparation we
must travel to 13 of our 16 preseason games including 4 tournaments.
The college has a baseball budget in place, but in most cases (team travel)
the budget cannot come close to fully funding our baseball program with
the financial requirements necessary to run a quality Championship
program.
