News and Homework for week beginning 21st November This week in Maths... We have been looking at measure, including length, width, perimeter and area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. Some children investigated how many different shapes they could make with the same perimeter but different areas (and vice-versa) whilst others looked at how we could write and use an algebraic statement for perimeter and area. In English...Our dragonology topic continued with the children exploring our example text – ‘The Buckby Bronze-belly’. First, we drew a text-map in partners and performing them out loud as a class. Then, using our example text, we investigated the features, structure and language of a non-chronological report. We discovered that it was missing subheadings so we brainstormed some of our own for the text using alliteration, rhyme, repetition and puns. In other news... In science, we have been conducting an experiment to see the impact certain drinks can have on our teeth. Using eggs, we have been recording observations each day this week, looking at how various liquids have changed the appearance and strength of the shell. We have noticed some pretty gruesome effects! Year 5 and 6 attended a music day hosted by Spratton Hall School and put on a tremendous performance of songs at the end of the day. On Thursday night we also held our Space Camp sleepover; the children took part in a number of space themed activities including pinhole constellations and pocket solar systems. The experience finished-off with a ‘tour of the galaxy’ before bedtime. Sam, for jumping enthusiastically into our dragonology topic. Sam has applied himself in all lessons, asking lots of questions to extend his understanding and deepen the experience for others. He has also brought in a number of items to share with the class, including some wonderful origami dragons and an old and mysterious diary entry he found at home from none-other than Dr. Drake himself! Homework: Please see below for homework this week. Remember to still log on and complete tasks on Mathletics, Spellodrome and Reading Eggspress. How many award certificates can you earn before the end of this term? Spellings: Please see separate sheet for list of words to be learnt this term. Spellings to be learnt this week are highlighted in pink. There will be a review in class each Friday. Maths: Please practice your ‘focus’ times table (children should be aware of which one they have been asked to focus on). The children have also been given a ‘bond’ and ‘badge’ sheet to help with rapid recall of bond and times table facts. The aim is to be able to complete all of the questions on the sheet correctly within 4 minutes. Please practice at home ready for time-trials at school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will be looking for improvement each week. th Homework is to be handed in on Wednesday 30 November. This week, our homework is to prepare a riddle ready for a riddle contest. As everyone knows, dragons are huge lovers of riddles and being prepared to challenge a dragon to a riddle contest may just help the keen dragonologist out of a ‘sticky situation’ out in the field! Answers to the comprehension task set last week have also been provided for marking: Homework – see separate task sheet on next page Bronze Use books or the internet to research and find your favourite riddle to copy. Please use a separate piece of paper (not your homework book) so we can add it to our display. Don’t forget to include the answer on the reverse or underneath a flap! Silver Devise your own riddle, using riddles you research in books/on the internet as inspiration. Can you write one with a dragon theme? Gold Age the paper that your riddle is written on with tea, coffee or however else you can think of. What could you do with the edges? Diamond Write your riddle in both English and dragon script, using the rune translation provided. Pupil Feedback Parent Feedback How much support did your child need?
