Unit # 3B: Republic and Statehood
Time Frame: 10 days
Objectives
Skills: The student will be able to…
 Explain the events that led to the annexation of Texas to the U.S.
 Identify the purposes and explain the importance of the Texas Declaration of Independence, the
Texas Constitution and other documents
 Identify leaders important to the founding of Texas as republic and a state; describe the successes
and problems and organization of the Republic of Texas
 Identify Texas’ role in the Mexican War of Independence and its impact
 Identify and explain the basic functions of the three branches of government in Texas and explain
how individuals can participate in various levels of local government; identify famous inventors and
scientists
 Apply geographic tools, describe a variety of regions
 Differentiate between, locate and use valid primary and secondary sources; analyze, organize and
interpret information; identify different points of view
 Incorporate main and supporting ideas in verbal and written communications such as journal
entries, reports, graphic organizers, outlines and bibliographies

Once per week, the Texas Studies Weekly is
planned for as a lesson, for a total of two
additional lessons in Unit 3B.
