A wonderful effort was put in by our 23 Palm Lake Resort Truganina
volunteers on Clean Up Australia Day recently, including new caretakers
Jo and Troy as well as Jo’s mum, Pauline.
The community around our resort is considerably cleaner and safer after
volunteers collected more than 50 bags of rubbish plus two cartons
of discarded beer bottles. This is not to mention all the waste that
volunteers placed in council rubbish bins along the way on the day.
We are very proud of our volunteers and very grateful for their splendid
contribution to improving the community that surrounds our location.
We want to acknowledge with great appreciation the support and
assistance given to us by Palm Lake Resort management and Walter
Elliott Holdings. Their contribution helped make our day a success and
the barbecue lunch supplied was yummy!

welcome Peter (Villa 118) to the stage as president
of the Bowls Club and wish Marlene (Villa 88) a
well-deserved break and congratulations on your

Carol (Villa 107) and we await some wonderful events
in your calendar. Jim (Villa 130) continues as the man

upd
Construction and sales at Palm Lake Resort Truganina are
both moving ahead at full steam already this year. With
only eight homes remaining at the time of publication of
this newsletter, it won’t be long before this resort is fully
sold out!
Palm Lake Resort Truganina is always striving to
provide our residents with the best facilities. Among
the current works underway, a slab has been poured for
the conservatory – an additional area at the back of our
clubhouse with beautiful creek views. We are also planning
to remove the site sheds and install a beautifully landscaped
park area.
The barbecue for our Stage 3 barbecue area has been
purchased and we are in the process of having some
cupboards built.
It will, no doubt, be a lovely spot for residents and their
guests to enjoy a picnic on the grass, in the fresh air and
sunshine.
And don’t forget to hire one of our bikes and go for a ride
down along our wetland trail and take in all the beautiful
scenery before the cold weather comes back! It really is a
perfect time of the year to be enjoying the great outdoors.
Happy birthday to you all!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS
Doug & Coral
Where did you grow up?
We both grew up in Williamstown, which is how we
met. We then moved to Hoppers Crossing to start
our family.
What do/did you do for work?
Doug’s background is as an engineering pattern
maker and he ran his own business for 46 years.
Coral was a hairdresser for eight years, then a
homemaker and assisted with Doug’s business.
What drew you to Palm Lake Resort Truganina?
It was simply the right timing. We were drawn to
lifestyle living and the homes are very modern with
good quality workmanship. We enjoy taking our
dog to the pet-friendly park. We like the security
that allows us the freedom to travel. It also feels
as though you’re on a holiday at the resort with so
many activities to do! We have met a lot of people at
the resort we haven’t seen for a long time which is a
plus. We are so impressed with the presentation of
the resort - it’s met all our expectations and we are
very happy.
What are the regular resort activities you never
miss and why?
We never miss the barbecue every Sunday at the
Bowls Club as we like the people and the social
aspect. Coral likes Zumba - staying fit via fun dance
moves and it’s a quick exercise class! Doug is looking
forward to starting bowls after he recently had a
lesson with a professional resident bowler. We love
taking our dog to the puppy park - it’s a lovely activity
for pets and it’s the biggest asset for dog owners.
Dream holiday destination?
Noosa and the Mediterranean.
What makes you proud?
Our children. Watching them grow up, we are so
proud - they keep us going!
If you haven’t had a visit from your designated warden, you
will shortly. Your emergency zone wardens will be visiting
each villa in their zone to ask the occupants to complete an
Emergency Preparedness checklist. They will show you how
to check your emergency alert buttons and smoke detectors
and will advise you of our emergency evacuation procedures
and more.
Get your name on the lists!
Each resort activity needs to have a minimum of five
participants to go ahead. All residents who wish to attend
an activity need to be sure to put their name on the list in
the clubhouse to ensure we have the minimum requirement
for numbers.
Relay for Life
Our staff members Carol and Chyvonne have formed a Relay
for Life 2017 team. Please support our girls and donate to
this great cause. A donation box is located next to the coffee
machine.
Pat’s cleaning
Now that Stage 4 is almost complete, it is the perfect time
to book Pat (Villa 105) to come and give the outside of your
home a clean. Any donations Pat receives are going towards
Cancer Research or the Lost Dogs Home. Phone Pat (ext 1105)
to make an appointment.

WORLD HEALTH DAY
BOOT-SCOOTIN’ BENEFITS
Dancing. It’s the simple, fun and cost-free fitness that science says benefits us in
more ways than one. According to multiple studies, dancing can help us combat
depression and anxiety, improve our strength, balance and mobility, and even
reduce our reliance on pain medication.
In 2013, a team from the University of New England in New South Wales and
Australian National University in Canberra recruited 41 people (aged up to
73 years and mainly well-educated) with complaints of stress, anxiety and
depression. Twenty participants then took eight tango sessions of 90 minutes
each over a two-week period, while the 21 in the control group were put on a
waiting list for classes. At the end of the study, participants showed significant
reductions in depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Satisfaction with life and
self-efficacy were significantly increased. At the one-month follow-up, depression,
anxiety and stress levels remained reduced. The research team concluded that a
brief program of tango dance was shown to be an effective strategy in alleviating
mood disorders.
Young or old – or somewhere in between – dancing regularly has also been proven
to improve confidence, positivity and even social skills. Line dancing is a favourite
pastime among residents of many Palm Lake Resorts across the country.
Instructor and Palm Lake Resort resident Libby Jensen says line dancing allows
participants of all levels to join in without feeling separate or standing out.
"Learning together while having fun is a great way for our neighbours to form
friendships," Libby says.
"As we age, issues of balance when changing direction and concentration arise.
Line dancing is an excellent and fun way to maintain these skills," she says. "Then
there’s the social aspects, the camaraderie, following directions - and it’s fun!
The whole reason that dancing in particular is good is because of the rhythm and
music and the endorphin release. It’s taking your mind to a different place and
you’re able to cope better with everything."
One of eight official global
health campaigns sponsored by
the World Health Organisation,
World Health Day on April 7 is an
opportunity to raise international
awareness of many different,
serious health issues. The day
marks the first World Health
Assembly in 1948 and has been
celebrated since 1950.
GOOD ONYA MUM!
Don’t forget May 10 as the day to
celebrate all kinds of mothers, be
it with a gift or a lunch or even a
simple phone call. Mother’s Day
began in 1908 after Anna Jervis’s
three-year campaign for a public
holiday to celebrate those she
described as "the person who has
done more for you than anyone in
the world". True that!
SPIRIT OF ANZAC
On April 25, we commemorate
our soldiers who have fought and
continue to fight for our country
and our freedom. The event began
in 1915 when news of the ANZAC’s
landing in Gallipoli reached New
Zealand and it has been honoured
ever since with dawn services and
marches in Australia and New
Zealand, as well as other islands
like the Cook Islands and Tonga.

Our Truganina Tuesday Second Team recently
won the Division 3 Section 2 competition, beating
Bundoora Bowls. Congratulations guys!
RESIDENTS ENJOY THEIR GREENS
Palm Lake Resort prides itself on featuring the best on-site facilities and for most residents
there’s nothing better than a game of friendly (and sometimes competitive!) bowls with
equally-as-friendly neighbours. So it was obvious that Palm Lake Resort would call on the lawn
bowls experts when it comes to building state-of-the-art clubhouses and class-leading greens.
Sportcrete is the company tasked with installing the surfaces for all Palm Lake Resort lawn bowls
facilities. Sportcrete spokesperson Ben Sutcliffe says the world-renowned Greengauge woven
bowls surface is used at all Palm Lake Resorts for its performance, durability and consistency.
"It’s a surface that’s renowned for providing consistent speeds of 15-16 seconds, which is ideal for
all levels and styles of bowling," Ben explains.
Coupled with the Sportcrete Bowls Base System, which utilises the latest laser technology and
environmentally friendly polymer bonding, the greens at all Palm Lake Resorts are truly top of the
range. "The outcome is a precision bowls base built to the finest tolerances, designed to perform
year in and year out," says Ben.
While most Palm Lake Resort bowls games are enjoyed socially, there are also quite competitive
inter-resort competitions held in various locations and other resort teams who compete quite
successfully in outside local and regional competitions. A huge congratulations must go to our
own Bowls Club and their recent performance. Four out of five of our teams made the finals - what
a fantastic season they all played. Our Section 2’s won their Grand Final and then went on to win
Division 3 Metro Grand Final, proudly bringing home the flag. Way to go fellas! Our Truganina
Tuesday Second Team also won the Division 3 Section 2 competition, beating Bundoora Bowls.
Bowls is a gentle sport that will keep your brain and body active. If you are yet to have a roll, make
sure you seek out a social event at our resort soon!

CARAVANNING
TIPS AND TRICKS
Among the thousands of people
who call a Palm Lake Resort
home, you’ll find the majority
are lovers of travel - especially
those travel adventures that
take them on the open road
around Australia. It’s because
of this phenomenon that Palm
Lake Resort architects are
designing new and improved
homes and facilities that cater
for residents’ other homes –
those on wheels. Whether you’re
a novice to the caravanning
game or a seasoned RV-pro,
there are a tonne of things
to keep in mind to keep your
‘cubbyhouse on wheels’ running smoothly. We asked Majestic Caravans’ national
manager Dan Fedden for his advice on all things RV maintenance and lifestyle:
1. Try before you buy. Dan recommends spending a night in your new caravan or RV
to make sure it’s the right fit. "Test the amazing luxury features to ensure you are
completely comfortable with everything from lights to cooking equipment and
fridge operation," he says.
2. A mobile home is just that – a home. So it follows that you should keep it as clean
as you would your house. Invest in a vacuum for small spaces, keep stain remover
on hand and stock the kitchen and bathroom with the appropriate cleaning
products. Comfort is key when you’re on the road.
3. That brand new shine won’t fade after a few months if your caravan is washed
regularly and properly. When it comes to product, it’s all about quality over
quantity. A good car wash will cut through dirt without leaving a streaky finish
and a brush, sponge and chamois should also be part of your tool kit.
4. Beware the weather. Leaving caravans out in the scorching Australian sun
is sometimes unavoidable but a good coat of polish will give the paint some
protection and shine.
5. Wax on, wax off. "Washing your van with wash and wax is the best to keep it
looking great," says Dan. However, he warns that this should only be done with a
very soft broom and dried with a chamois. He also says to avoid the windows –
these can be cleaned with a soft cloth and some Windex. While you’re at it, check
all the window latches and hinges are operating properly.
6. Take note of any wear and tear inside and outside of your caravan and keep on
top of maintenance. Dan says to check silicone for any gaps every three months
and keep methylated spirits on hand to combat any scratches and marks that are
bound to come up over time.
7. Invest in your caravan and your safety by getting it serviced every three-to-six
months. In the interim, inspect the drainage points, internal electricity and gas,
smoke alarms, internal and external lights and electrical sockets yourself.
8. Keep your battery going for longer by making sure there’s no earth or debris in or around it. "This will stop leakage whilst not in use," says Dan. You can
also check levels with a voltmeter to make sure everything is ship shape.
9. Equip yourself for life on the road with the many great travel guides and
cookbooks available. Whether you’re adventuring for a day or a month,
you’ll find great things to see and do from the comfort of your RV. See right, for some great new titles...

HEALTHY CHOC CHIP COOKIES
This is my idea of the perfect treat. It’s nourishing,
takes minutes to make (which is always a bonus) and
is the ultimate healthy chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Health benefits: Firstly, almonds are a rich source of
protein, essential fats and fibre. They also contain
antioxidants and mood-elevating amino acids. If
you add cacao nibs or dark chocolate, prepare for a
magnesium boost and an antioxidant hit that rivals
green tea.
LAMB, LENTIL AND BACON HOT POT
There’s nothing like a tasty stew to warm you up as the nights get
cooler. This healthy lamb shank recipe is so simple to make, it’s sure
to become a firm favourite. You don’t really need a whole shank
per person here. I’m all for spending extra money on quality meat,
buying less of it (so it’s still affordable) and bulking it out with other
good stuff. Not only is this approach kinder to your hip pocket,
but it’s also a healthier way to eat. I’m all for variety in the diet, so
including the lentils for extra protein is a winner. You can either
throw it in the slow cooker or cook in the oven at a low temperature
(like below). The meat just melts in your mouth and the flavour of
the lamb with bacon and rosemary is a match made in heaven.
Ingredients
• 2 onions, sliced
• 1-2 large cloves garlic, sliced
• 2-4 lamb shanks
• 1 can brown lentils (drained, rinsed) or 1 cup cooked brown lentils
• 2-4 carrots, sliced roughly
• 4 rashers bacon, diced roughly
• 1 cup preferably homemade chicken or lamb broth (stock)
• ¼ cup red wine
• 1-2 cups Swiss brown or button mushrooms, sliced
• 2 -3 stems celery, sliced roughly
• 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped (or 1 tablespoon of dried)
• Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
Optional extras: 1 zucchini, eggplant or parsnip, diced
Method
Preheat your oven to 160C. In a large oven-proof dish (I like my
cast iron pot), place the lamb shanks and brown quickly on the
stove top over a medium high heat. This is not essential and I
have to confess, I’m a bit lazy and tend to take the ‘just throw it
all in’ approach. Next, add all of the ingredients, season and stir to
combine. ake sure the lamb shanks are toward the bottom of the
dish and covered with the liquid and other ingredients. Place the
lid on the pot and cook for 2-3 hours. The longer it cooks the more
tender the lamb. Sprinkle with finely chopped parsley and serve
alone or with one of the following serving suggestions:
Steamed and buttered vegetables, mashed potato, sweet potato
or pumpkin (soaks up the delicious juices), pureed or mashed
cauliflower, green beans steamed and dressed with lemon juice,
zest and extra virgin olive oil. Serves 4.
Ingredients
• 150g (1 ¼ firmly packed cups) almond meal
• 55g (¼ cups) virgin coconut oil (melted if solid) or
macadamia oil
• 85g (¼ cup) rice malt syrup or raw honey (taste the
batter and alter the sweetness as required)
• 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or powder
• 2 tablespoons cacao nibs or dark chocolate chips
• 1 tablespoon water
Method
Preheat your oven to 150C. In a mixing bowl or food
processor, combine all of the ingredients above until
well combined.
Roll tablespoons of the mix in your hands and place
them onto a tray lined with baking paper.
Flatten with the back of the fork. The cookies pictured
have cacao nibs through them and I put a little piece of
Green and Blacks 85 per cent chocolate on top. Bake for
15 minutes or until starting to brown on top.
The best thing about these cookies is that if you do
manage to stop at one or two and wait a while, you will
find yourself satisfyingly full. That is of course, if you do
manage to stop at all!
