There are turkeys to deal with: we specialize in local, organic and heritage birds. Helping customers decide what kind to order and what size so that there will be plenty of leftovers or none at all is something that Eli’s butchers are always happy to do. There are stuffing mixes to prepare and sausages to fill. There are other birds to think about. Not everyone loves turkey. Small groups will often choose a richly delicious capon or individual Cornish hens and large groups will sometimes have a turkey and a ham. Whatever size group you are celebrating with this season, count on the butchers at Eli’s to make the holiday one you can enjoy. Made by Francis Egly in Ambonay, this is one of our favorite examples of growers’ Champagne. WHITES 2014 Finger Lakes “Dry Riesling” Hermann J. Wiemer $75 Hermann Wiemer planted one of the first successful vinifera vineyards on Seneca Lake in 1976. This is the signature Riesling from the estate, a vibrant, aromatic wine with a distinctive mineral quality. It’s a Thanksgiving tradition for Eli and his family. 2014 Vin de France (Rhone), Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet, Herve Souhaut $104 90% Roussanne and 10% Viogner (all noncloned vines). Herve Souhaut makes his natural wines on his farm “Les Romaneux” opposite the famous hills of Hermitage, in the Northern Rhone. This cuvée, made of Roussanne with just a touch of Viogner, shows notes of pear and elderflower, is elegant and generous, and a very versatile wine for the holiday table. 14 www.elizabarwine.com 2002 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay, Domaine Rolet $60 Elaine, Guy, Bernard and Pierre Rolet own and manage this domaine characterized by its consistency and the slightly oxidized style that they call “a little hazelnut nose.” This is a beautiful example of balanced Jura wine, mature and precise, perfect for the turkey and the cheese course that might follow it.
