lived at Bristol Zoo from 1930 to 1948.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was, perhaps, the
leading civil engineer in Britain in the 19th century.
The BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) has been
based in Bristol since its formation in 1957.
Wallace, a cheese loving inventor, and his faithful
dog, Gromit, are the creations of Bristol-based
Nick Park of Aardman Animatons.
Brunel’s ss Great Britain was an advanced passenger
steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel
for the Great Western Steamship Company’s
transatlantic service between Bristol and New York.
Born in Bristol, Samuel Plimsoll was a British
politician and social reformer.
This Grade I listed structure is widely regarded as
one of the world’s greatest bridges.

Giovanni Cabot (known in English as John Cabot)
was an Italian navigator and explorer who settled in
Bristol in 1490.
Born in Bristol, Cary Grant is probably the
foremost exemplar of the debonair leading man:
handsome, virile, charismatic and charming.
Concorde was a product of an Anglo-French
government treaty, combining the manufacturing
efforts of Aerospatiale and the Bristol based British
Aircraft Corporation.
Sir David Attenborough is Britain’s best-known
natural history film-maker.
Born in Bristol, Johnny Ball is a popular television
personality and a great populariser of mathematics.
John Cleese is a successful actor, comedian, writer
and film producer who was born in
Weston-Super-Mare.
Born in Bristol, James May is a television
presenter and award-winning journalist.

Tony Hart was an artist and television presenter.
His television career spanned 50 years and included
Take Hart and Vision On, both of which were
filmed in Bristol.
Ernest John ‘Johnny’ Morris OBE was best known as
a presenter, narrator and ‘Zoo keeper’ for the television
series ‘Animal Magic’ (1962-1984, filmed in part at
Bristol Zoo Gardens).
Nick Park (Director/Producer) is a four-time
Academy Award winner, and the creator of the
animated duo Wallace & Gromit.
Tony Robinson (born 15th August 1946) is an actor,
comedian and author and co-founded the Avon
Touring Company, a Bristol based community
theatre company.
Anthony ‘Tony’ Benn is a former Labour Cabinet
Minister. In 1950 he was elected as an MP for
Bristol South East and was consistently re-elected
until 1983.
Lazarus and Isaac Jacobs were the most famous
makers of Bristol Blue Glass in the 1780’s. Their
company held a Royal warrant and made glass for
the aristocrats of Europe.
Blackbeard, or Edward Teach, Thatch or
Drummond was the most famous pirate to emanate
from Bristol.

Opened in 1836 by the Bristol, Clifton and West of
England Zoological Society, Bristol Zoo Gardens is
the fifth oldest Zoo in the world.
Bristol Old Vic is the oldest continuously working
theatre in the country and a rare surviving example
of a Georgian Playhouse.
Bristol Cars is a manufacturer of hand-built, luxury
cars, based at Patchway.
Sir Winston Churchill was a British politician who
led the United Kingdom as Prime Minister during
the Second World War.
Peter ‘John’ Ateyo was a Wiltshire-born footballer
who was signed from under the noses of League
Champions Portsmouth in 1951 by Bristol City.
Geoffrey Bradford was a professional footballer
who spent his entire career at Bristol Rovers and
won one international cap for England.

Dr William Gilbert (W.G) Grace was a Downend
born amateur cricketer who has been widely
acknowledged as the greatest player of all time.
A native of Bristol, Ian Holloway is a football
manager and former player.
Gary Mabutt is a former professional footballer who
was born in Bristol in 1961.
Robert Charles ‘Jack’ Russell MBE is a retired
international cricketer, now known for his abilities
as an artist and cricket coach.
Mark Watson is a stand-up comedian, author and
sports pundit who was born in Bristol in 1980.
Lee Evans is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor and
musician who was born in Avonmouth in 1964.

born in Bath in 1964 and spent the majority of his
childhood in Keynsham.
Russell Howard was born in Bristol in 1980 and
made a name for himself on the Bristol comedy
circuit while studying in Bristol.
Fred Wedlock was a Bristolian folk singer, actor
and TV presenter, best known for his hit ‘The
Oldest Swinger in Town’.
Originating in Bristol, Massive Attack are amongst
the most innovative and influential groups of their
generation.
Adge Cutler and The Wurzels, renamed The
Wurzels after Cutler’s death, are a British Scrumpy
and Western band.
Bernard Stanley Bilk worked in the Bristol Wills
Tobacco factory before becoming a talented
clarinettist in the late 1950’s.
J.S Fry & Sons was a Bristol chocolate company
founded in 1728.

Don Cameron is a Scottish balloonist who founded
Cameron Balloons, the world’s largest hot air balloon
manufacturer, based in Bedminster.
Born in Bishopston, Paul Dirac was considered to
be one of the greatest and most influential
theoretical physicists of his time.
Born in Bedminster, John James became one of the
most successful businessmen in post war Britain,
and went on to set up The John James Foundation.
Many famous aero engines have been produced at
Filton, including Olympus for Concorde and
Pegasus for the Harrier.
Born in Yate, Joanne ‘Jo’ Rowling OBE is best
known as the creator of the Harry Potter book
series.
Banksy is a world renowned, Bristol-based graffiti
artist whose artwork is often political and/or
humorous in nature.
Writer, director, presenter, comedian and actor
Stephen Merchant was born in Bristol in 1974.

Born in Bristol in 1854, Sir George White is best
known for his work with the Bristol Tramways
Company where he was Secretary and Chairman.
In 2011 Bristol Zoo Gardens celebrated its 175th
birthday by placement of dozens of life sized painted
gorilla sculptures on the streets of Bristol.
Judd Trump is a professional snooker player who
was born in Bristol in 1989.
Mr Woodward was the founder of CLIC, Cancer
and Leukaemia in Childhood charity.
Figure skater Robin Cousins is a three times World
Medallist, a four times British National Champion,
an Olympic Champion and a European Champion.
Born in Bristol in 1935, David Prowse is most
famous for taking on the role of Darth Vadar in
the Star Wars Trilogy.
Wendy and Rosie were Bristol Zoo’s resident
elephants. Rosie lived at the Zoo for 23 years and
died in 1961. Wendy arrived in 1961 and died in
2002 aged 42.

Born in Keynsham in 1975, Marcus Trescothick
grew up to become one of the South West’s most
talented international cricket players.
Bristol City, founded in 1897, play at Ashton Gate,
in the south of the city.
Formed as the Black Arabs in 1883, they entered
into the football league in 1920 and play their
matches at The Memorial Stadium.
Barley Close Primary School has been an eco-friendly
and sustainable school for four years. Achievements
include naming Eco Rangers, setting up Recycling
Awards and Eco Days.

The Bristol Zoo volunteers have been established
for 21 years. This is the largest European Zoo
volunteer scheme, currently working with 270 people.
Pat Ellingham was Acting Chief Executive of the
Avon Wildlife Trust after 30 years' service and
raised £3.5 million to restore Folly Farm.
Steve champions Bristol’s wildlife and sustainability
wherever possible. He recently won the Bristol
Green Capital’s Volunteer of the Year award.
An area which implements a number of sustainable
initiatives including; Ecomotive, St Werburghs City Farm,
Millennium Narroways Green Trust, Ashley Vale Action
Group and Ashley Vale Allotment Association.
