I have been back from maternity leave for a couple weeks now. It has been so nice to see everyone and to catch up with each of you on what has been going on the past couple months in your lives. Our house has had a lot of changes the last month. First Alli started Kindergarten in Milroy. She is loving it. You may see her here every so often. She rides the bus here and then is picked up from here to go to her Grandma’s house. Second and third changes for us were me coming back to work and Emily starting daycare. I am lucky that Emily is such a happy easy going baby, it made the transition very smooth. If you are out and about around Marshall take a drive out by the corner of 23 and 59 to check out ily the digital billboard. We now have an advertisement on there. Please let me know what you think! I also want to remind you to check out our Facebook page. We have been posting pictures and videos of the tenants during activities. It is a great way to stay connected with what is going in our Community! Em ~ Sara Dolan Words from Wellness Staying active can help you stay healthy, energetic and independent as you get older. Many adults aged 65 and over spend, on average, 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary age group. They're paying a high price for their inactivity, with higher rates of falls, obesity, heart disease and early death compared with the general population. As you get older, it becomes even more important to remain active if you want to stay healthy and maintain your independence. If you don't stay active, all the things you’ve always enjoyed doing and taken for granted may start to become a little bit harder. You may struggle to pursue simple pleasures, such as playing with the grandchildren, walking to the shops, leisure activities and meeting up with friends. You might start to get aches and pains that you never had before, and have less energy to go out. You may also be more vulnerable to falling and getting ill more often. This can all lead to being less able to look after yourself and do the things you enjoy. We have lots of fun activities planned for the month of October to keep you busy, including making cards with Pat Drown, Beth Wilson coming to play piano and sing for us, Baking Group, a bus trip to Brau Brothers for dinner and a tour of the facility, Wee Care Preschool BINGO, ACT class at the YMCA, Fall Craft projects, weekly bus trips to Hy-Vee, Marshall Area Story Tellers coming to share stories, Halloween Trick and Treaters, our October Birthday Social and a drive through the country to check the progress of the crops. ~ Karen Alfson Nurses Notes Did you know there are over 200 different types of viruses, not necessarily influenza, that cause flu-like symptoms!? Did you know that the influenza virus is actually a respiratory virus? Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year! 3 easy ways to protect yourself from the flu (and other viruses alike): Avoid close contact - Avoid people who are sick and have been vaccinated against the flu with the nasal spray, as it is a live virus! Support your immune system – eating good, exercise and getting enough sleep are key!! WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY!! Viruses like the flu are spread though mucous droplets that can live on surfaces like door handles and desk tops. Touching these surfaces and then touching your nose, mouth, or eyes can make you sick. You can break this chain of infection with proper hand washing Total Care Pharmacy will be at Heritage Pointe on October 20th administering flu vaccinations to any staff member, tenant and their family members who wish to receive it. Please have your consent form filled out and to me no later than October 10th to ensure that there are enough vaccinations ordered and brought for everyone!! The best way to fight the flu is to prevent it!!! As we slide into the Fall season we are blessed with the beauty of changing colors all around us. October is the 10th month of the year, and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. In common years January starts on the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day of the week as October in leap years. October ends on the same day of the week as February every year and January in common years only. There are several different birthstone’s listed for the month of October. The most common one is the Opal. There are two distinct types of opal, common and precious. The way the silica particles form determines which type. It is said that the opal will crack if it is worn by someone who was not born in October . Its birth flower is the calendula (a marigold species). October’s best fruits and vegetables for the month are Sweet corn and Apples. ~ Dawn Giese Everyone needs a good chuckle: An elderly couple are in church. The wife leans over and whispers to her husband, "I just let out a long, silent fart. What should I do?" The husband replies, "First off, replace the batteries in your hearing aid!" It’s that time when the Farmer's Market opens up and the bounty of planting is made available. We have so many options for FRESH produce that it’s like a dream come true. We have five primary taste sensations. They include: salty, sour, sweet, bitter, and something called umami. The first four are very easy to understand. That last one, pronounced something like Ou-mommy [ /uːˈmɑː.mi/ ] is a little more difficult to explain. Umami can be described as a pleasant "brothy" or "meaty" taste with a long lasting, mouthwatering and coating sensation over the tongue. More literally, it is a “pleasant savory taste”. Umami is the “thing” that we like most about a perfectly ripe tomato, mushrooms, soy, potatoes, and most meats.
