IB Spanish SL Summer Assignment What is IB Spanish? IB SL is an advanced course in which students will enhance their language use and skills through selected readings, listening and conversational activities. Language B is a language acquisition course developed at two levels—standard level (SL) and higher level (HL)—for students with some background in the target language. While acquiring a language, students will explore the culture(s) connected to it. The focus of these courses is language acquisition and intercultural understanding. I understand that summers can be busy and I do not expect you to spend hours on these assignments every week. However, I do expect that you practice your Spanish regularly and improve your skills over the summer. Options for submission A. Email a. Submit photographs of your work to both of the following email addresses: [email protected] and [email protected] b. For the subject of your email, make your subject: “IB Spanish Last name, first name” Example: “IB Spanish Wilson, Tamaini” or “IB Spanish Downs, Jessie” B. Inclass a. Bring copies of your summer work during the first week of class C. Assignment calendar a. We understand that summers can be busy and we do not expect you to spend hours on these assignments every week. The due dates are not as important as making sure you do all of the activities throughout the summer, especially since the assignments are designed to provide continual use of the language all summer long which in turn will directly impact your performance in the course. By June 17th: a. Read p. 9 to 29 in Cartas a mi mama and write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) that summarize the story in Spanish IN YOUR OWN WORDS. b. Find 5 NEW words (new to you) and write your own definitions (in your own words) in Spanish and in your composition notebook. c. Use each new word to write an original sentence (not a quote from the book) in your composition book. d. Call Google Voice and record an introduction (2 minutes minimum, en español). Introduce yourself: Who are you? What are your interests? What are your strengths? What is most difficult for you? (in regards to Spanish). Make sure to say your first and last name – call 6786323036 and leave a message. B. By June 30th: a. Read p. 31 to 56 in Cartas a mi mama and write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) that summarize the story in Spanish IN YOUR OWN WORDS. b. Find 5 NEW words (new to you) and write your own definitions (in your own words) in Spanish and in your composition notebook. c. Use each new word to write an original sentence (not a quote from the book) in your composition book. d. Find a YouTube channel in Spanish that relates to a personal interest or passion of your (music, fashion, shoe reviews, sports, science, nature, environmental issues, entertainment, movie reviews). Email a link to the YouTuber’s channel to [email protected] and [email protected]. e. Write write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) in Spanish about the YouTube channel that you found. Include what you thought, what you understood, if you enjoyed it, etc. C. By July 8th: a. Read p. 57 to 78 in Cartas a mi mama and write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) that summarize the story in Spanish IN YOUR OWN WORDS. b. Find 5 NEW words (new to you) and write your own definitions (in your own words) in Spanish and in your composition notebook. c. Use each new word to write an original sentence (not a quote from the book) in your composition book. d. Watch an ageappropriate Spanish movie via Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, any other streaming platform or on DVD. i. Suggestions: Machuca, Casi casi, Infancia clandestina, En el tiempo de las mariposas, Hermano e. Write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) in Spanish about the movie that you watched. Include what you thought, what you understood, if you enjoyed it, etc. D. By July 22nd: a. Read p. 79 to 102 in Cartas a mi mama and write 2 paragraphs (each paragraph should be 5 to 8 sentences long) that summarize the story in Spanish IN YOUR OWN WORDS. b. Find 5 NEW words (new to you) and write your own definitions (in your own words) in Spanish and in your composition notebook. c. Use each new word to write an original sentence (not a quote from the book) in your composition book. d. Call Google Voice and record an update of how your summer has been going (2 minutes minimum, en español) – What’s new, if you have traveled, anything interesting, thoughts and opinions of current news stories, etc. Make sure to say your first and last name – call 6786323036 and leave a message. Some other things you can do in the summer and throughout the year: 1. Pick up a Spanish language newspaper or magazine when you see one and browse through it. 2. Visit and read online Spanish newspapers (see reference list below). 3. Watch Univisión, Telemundo or other Spanish programming on TV. News programs like ‘Primer Impacto’ or ‘Noticiero’ are especially useful. Also, watch DVDs in Spanish or actual Spanish movies. Don’t try to understand every word at first; you WILL get better! 4. Listen to Spanish music or podcasts in Spanish. 5. Seek out live experiences with Spanish in your community.
