The next four
weeks…..
Summer term begins
Sat 30 Apr (12pm) -Sun 2May (9pm)
What a busy and purposeful ten
weeks! The Lent term can often
be the most challenging of them
all—dark nights, coursework
deadlines and exams edging
ever nearer, and Christmas a
dim and distant memory. I am
proud of the way in which the
Nugent girls have pulled
together to make this term a
success, and I hope that the next
few pages (largely written by
the girls) will give you some
idea of what has been going on.

And so we reach the end of another
term, and the sun earlier this week
indicates that we really are on the cusp
of summer. However, for those girls
sitting public exams next term (the
majority of them), these holidays must
be about revision as well as rest and
relaxation.
I was also recommended the site
http://www.getcoldturkey.com/ where
I am told that you can ban yourself
from various social networking sites
for a specific amount of time – it is all
a far cry from the library books and
handwritten notes which was what
revision meant to me in the 1990s, but
times do indeed change! Whichever
way your daughter chooses to revise, I
would always encourage her to get a
decent amount of rest, relaxation and
time spent with family and friends.
It would not be right to sign off
without acknowledging the fantastic
work done by the Nugent staff and
prefect team . All have worked
tirelessly and cheerfully, and without
them, the job would not be the pleasure that it is. Thank you too to ALL
of the girls for their camaraderie,
integrity and resilience throughout
these dark wintery months.
I wish you all a very peaceful Easter.
I will be in Nepal (hopefully) climbing Lobuche Peak, but will be able to
check my emails on my return.
With very best wishes,

Lent Term 2016
The term certainly began
on an academic high as we
heard that Candy Huang
and Sophie Noton both
received offers to study at
Cambridge. It ended on
a similar high today with
Ellie Hardy r eceiving
her Silver D of E— all
fabulous achievements.
On the sporting front,
thanks to exceptional team
effort, we WON the
overall Steeplechase cup,
as well as the Intermediate
and Seniors. The Juniors
also WON the netball
competition, and overall
we were placed second.
We also WON the Newton
Reading Prize (a first), but
perhaps most importantly,
we have managed to raise
a staggering £1500 for
Cancer Research during
our Bikeathon. Many
thanks to all of you who
have donated.

Nugent Charity Bike Ride
Year 9—by Zara Lawson Johnston and Daisy Holden Craufurd
The second term has flown by for us. We started off by serving the sixth
formers at the Nugent Dinner, it was great to see all the staff and sixth form
dressed up with the casino theme. Ella Hemming won steeplechase just before
half term, which contributed to Nugent wining the overall girls! In the charity
bike ride, Zara L-J was a nutter and stayed up till 7 am and then went
swiftly to bed and wasn’t seen again until chapel that day. We all willingly
chose slots at 3 am to 5 am. We soon learnt that Anna Hasell has a natural
talent for mini golf, if the aim was to hit it onto the road and not the course!
Anna and Ella have been busy with kick-boxing, and they have both got
their red belts and have been selected to play fives nationals. There not the
only ones fighting as Daisy Holden Craufurd (who has also started guitar
lessons) has been doing self defence. Eliza Reynolds has been “enjoying”
swimming this term and goes to as many morning slots as she can and has
also been playing hockey for the under 15’s, who are now Sussex champions.
Zara is constantly at dr ama with ‘Teecher s’ and Lamda going on. She
has also started tennis lessons this term and is loving it. We are all looking
forward to a well deserved break.
The first weekend after half term
was the second Nugent Charity
bike ride. The whole house was
involved in cycling 20 minute
stints—it was a real team effort.
Deputy Head of House, Nadya set
the wheels in motion at 5pm on the
Saturday, and Head of House
Georgie pedaled us home in the
final stint on the Sunday.
Bedtimes were abandoned in
favour of girly movies, and at various points of the 24 hours, the common room became a hybrid of a
teenage dormitory, party zone
and refugee camp. It was great
though to see the donations flying
in, and thanks to your generosity
we have now raised over £1500 for
Cancer Research. Thank you to
Mrs Whiddett Adams and a fabulous Upper Sixth prefect team for
making it happen.
Year 10—by Charlie Chatterton and Holly Fletcher– Price
Lent term has been eventful for Year10, with all of us being involved in many
different areas of the curriculum. Izzy McIntosh, Holly Fletcher-Price, Annie
Wilson, Charlie Chatterton and Sabina McNeish competed in the Sussex
cup hockey final where they came out on top after finishing the game 1-1 leading to an intense round of Penalty flicks. Sticking with sport, the U15A’s netball
team (including Izzy, Annie, Holly, Charlie and Daisy Mayhew) had a tremendous season, winning the SISNA tournament (but unfortunately getting
disqualified) and narrowly coming runners up in the Benenden tournament.
Valentina Khalturina has r aised her national tennis r ating to 4.2 , and
Annie and Izzy came second and four th in the Steeplechase – Izzy also
swam in the Bath Cup. Not only are we a sporty year group, but we also offer
creativity in the area of textiles, with Gianna Quinn, Ceci Mann and Tess
Donnelly showcasing their talents at a r ecent exhibition. Special mention to
Phoebe Henrick for star ting GCSE dr ama! And last but not least we must
recognise the achievement from Clem Xu , scoring an amazing 94% in her
mock GCSE maths exam and taking part in the Maths Olympiad. Well done all.

Year 11—by Georgia Yarnall
Upper Sixth —by Zanna Cooper and Georgie Moore
We had an exciting start to the term with an amazing two
Cambridge offers given to Sophie Noton and Candy Huang. Such
an impressive accolade for Nugent as a whole was followed by an
equally successful casino themed Nugent sixth form dinner.
Special mention must go to Alice Streeter for organising it.
Further academic achievements have come from the whole Upper
Sixth achieving many university offers but also in the completion of
their Extended Project Qualification showing particular dedication
and hard work by Zanna Cooper, Anna Cope and Sophie.
Ashleigh Ellison has been wor king r eally har d in Histor y.
Vanessa Erl gained one of the top eRC aver ages in the school.
This term Nugent year 11 has had another successful term, ranging from
continued academic excellence to a number of achievements across the
co-curricular board. In this year’s Steeplechase, dreaded by most of us, the top
11 positions were dominated by Nugent, including Lizzie Turner (3rd), Prue
Barnes (5th), Aven Dong (7th) and Laura Hoffmann (11th). On a less sporty
note the annual Newton Reading Prize competition was another standout
performance. Both Marianne McMurdo and Georgia Yarnall were highly
commended for their entries and we (along with Morayo Adeosun) won the
trophy for the best house. Morayo’s cheery attitude and relentless enthusiasm
at Eastbourne’s recent half marathon also earned her a Headmaster’s
commendation. The recent visit of textile students from Vienna has seen both
Maria Mercade and Emma Pollmann wor king har d to make the students
feel welcome and their collaborative projects have been showcased in the
Birley. Sofya Mikhaylova and Georgina Franklin flew the flag for Nugent at
the Young Musician of the Year and inter-house chess. The term has been filled
with lots of revision and work, Nugent year 11 often can be found at many of
the revision sessions held across the school and the work will surely pay off
come the summer time.
Great accomplishments have come about also in the field of sport.
Nugent won Steeplechase as seniors and as a whole house,
Scarlett Scotland and Georgie Moore led ever yone coming 2nd
and 4th. Georgie and Augusta King continued playing
competitive hockey culminating the National Finals. Augusta,
Georgie, Alice, Zanna and Hermione Wohlrab have all
competed at senior level netball this term and have had a successful
season. Moreover, Augusta and Scarlett also took part in the Bath
Cup swimming nationals, both achieved a personal bests.
Lower Sixth—by Ellie Daly and Nicole Wallbridge Bourmistrova
We have ended the term with a gripping drama performance based
on psychological difficulties from Hermione and Millie Cade.
Milly Wright has also contr ibuted to the dr ama depar tment
through her excellent costume making skills. Everyone enjoyed
taking part in the Charity Bike Ride, with Nadya Boboshko
pedalling to start the 24 hours and the year as a whole cycled the
furthest average.
This term has been an all-round success for the girls in Year 12 Nugent. On the
arts front, Sam Adelstein has received many exciting university offers for art
and textiles. Along with Adelaide O’Conor, she is proud to have finished her
textiles project. Adelaide has also been able to come back from her long term
injury and continue with her dancing. Sina Bohme completed her AS practical in
drama with an amazing performance supported by many girls in house. Hebe
Wohrab has been wor king har d in her AS ar t cour se whilst knitting for
charity. Emily Mantle has been a key player in the thirds netball team and came
fifteenth overall in the Steeplechase. As well as netball, squash has been a key
sport for several girls in house. Freya McNeish, Lully Gibbons, Ellie Hardy
and Ellie Daly have all improved their skills significantly throughout the term
with Lully wining best overall player. Ellie H was involved in the college’s chess
tournament and is now proud of her newly found talent. She continues to work
towards D of E gold.

On the academic side of the college both Nicole Wallbridge Bourmistrova and
Bella Peng enter ed Cambr idge essay competitions. Nicole also par ticipated
and came second in a general knowledge quiz against other schools in the UK.
Katharina Muller had a taste of Oxbr idge life, and Leksie Zdziebko won a
place on a taster day at UCL for economics as well as actively improving her
netball skills playing as goal shooter for her team. Ivana Kolak visited London to
enhance her knowledge in history and she continues develop her already high
