Part I
A. Rules of the Game\ Amy Tan
1) Amy's mother taught her to keep her feelings to herself and not reveal
them.
2) 2. Because Waverly kept quiet.
3) In the story chess is also a metaphor for life and how to succeed. By
using chess, the story teaches us important skill to succeed in life like
gaining knowledge, not revealing you secrets, patience and self-control.
4) a. TK I chose: Inferring
At the end of the story Waverly sees her mother as a rival. Waverly's
mother is currently beating her in the game of life because she punished
her and made her feel ashamed.
b. I chose this TK because I inferred why Waverly's mother is her
opponent and why she had a smile of victory.
5) Waverly's mother has no respect for the American culture. She thinks
Americans are lazy and inferior to the Chinese people. They always show
their emotions and don’t have self-control. Waverly however wants to be
an American teenager. She likes the fact that as an American she can be
more independent and talk back to her mother. She also knows that in
America you can succeed if you work hard enough.

B. The Enemy\ Pearl S. Buck
6) The servants leave because they are afraid of being involved with
hiding a white man.
7) a. Sadao respected his father and listened to him.
b. Sadao's father cares about his education.
8) The story takes place in Japan during World War II. This fact is
important to the story because it explains why it was so dangerous for
Sadao to hide an American soldier in his house.
9) a. TK I chose: Explaining patterns
Sadao's reward was that he succeeded in saving the American soldier's
life. He tried all through the story to follow the values he learned as a
doctor and kept the soldier safe despite the danger to himself.
b. I chose this TK because I saw the pattern of Sadao's behavior in
the story when he keeps saving the white man.
10) The general is grateful to Sadao and feels like he owes him a debt. He
also needs Sadao as his personal surgeon and that is why Sadao knows
that the general will keep his secret.

Part II
C. All My Sons\ Arthur Miller
11) 2. Chris might influence Jim to go into research.
12) Joe and Steve were put in jail because the sold defective airplane
parts to the army that later caused the death of 21 pilots.
13) George wears his father's hat because Steve asked him to wear it and
he wants to show that he supports his father. He has made peace with
Steve and believes his version of the story.
14) a. TK I chose: explaining patterns
Chris can be seen as an idealistic person. He believes that people have a
responsibility for others. He moves out of his house once he learns of
Joe's crime and he is willing to take him to the police so he will be
punished.
b. I chose this TK because I explained Chris' actions throughout the
story and how they make his an idealistic person.
15) Anne can be seen as a positive person in act III. Anne is strong, loyal
and honest in act III. We can see in the whole story that she always tries
to do the right thing. Before act III she tries to protect the Kellers
from the truth about Larry's death. In the end her love for Chris is the
most important thing to her and she chooses to be with him.

D. The Wave\ Morton Rhue
16) 1. Discipline\2. Community
17) He wanted to teach his students about the rise of fascism and why no
one resisted it in Germany.
18) Laurie would not agree with this quote. She would say that the Wave
is not democratic because even though everyone in it is equal it was Mr.
Ross who gives them the rules and tells them what to do.
19) a. TK I chose: Compare and contrast
The Grapevine's office reminds Carl of Anne Frank's attic because it is a
place where he and his friends can be safe from the Wave and not worry
about other students hearing them. In this way it is like Anne Frank's
attic which she used to hide from the Nazis.
b. I chose this TK because I compared between the Grapevine's office
and Anne Frank's attic and how they were used.
20) I predict that the editorial will be about the Wave experiment and
its negative effects on the school. The editorial will compare between the
Wave and the Nazi party and talk about how something like this could
happen in their school.

Part III- Bridging Text and Context
21) A Summer's Reading\ Bernard Malamud
This quote adds to my understanding of the story because it helps me to
understand the reason reading was valued by Mr. Cattanzara and others
in George's neighborhood. People came to the United States in search of
the American dream: that everyone has an equal chance to succeed if
they try hard enough. The people in the neighborhood were immigrants
and understood that the only way that they, or their children, could
succeed in the United States was by getting an education. Although
George had dropped out of school, the people in the neighborhood
encouraged George when they found out he was reading.
22) As I Grew Older\ Langston Hughes
This quote helps me understand the themes of Langston Hughes' poetry
and what lies behind the poem As I Grew Older. In the poem he
expresses the same feelings as in this quote: that while inside his head he
was just like any other man, but the outside world did not let him be like
any other man. The outside world would not let him forget that he was
black. Being black kept him from fulfilling the dreams he had. He was not
allowed to forget that the white world considered him inferior.

23) Grandmother\ Sameeneh Shirazie
This quote adds to our understanding of the poem because it gives us the
message that all human beings have value. It connects to the message of
the poem because the speaker took her grandmother for granted without
giving any thought to her grandmother's inner world. When she does stop
to talk to her, she realizes that her grandmother has a lot to say and a
lot to share about her life. We understand that if younger people just
took notice of older people they would see that they are unique with
unique experiences and they, too, want to share their daily experiences so
as not to be lonely.
