Picasso’s Rose Period
• Paintings had cheerful orange and pink colors, which
contrasted with the cool, somber tones of the previous
Blue Period.
• Began 1904 to 1907
• Picasso was happy in his relationship with Fernande
Olivier whom he had met in 1904 and was one reason
why his paintings became happier.
• Harlequins, circus performers and clowns appear
frequently in the Rose Period and will populate Picasso's
paintings at various stages through the rest of his long
career. (The harlequin, a comedic character usually
depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a
personal symbol for Picasso.)
• The Rose Period was French influenced because
Picasso lived in Paris, France for a long portion of his
life.

Often Abstract
In cubist artworks, objects are broken up,
analyzed, and re-assembled in an
abstracted form—instead of depicting
objects from one viewpoint, the artist
depicts the subject from a multitude of
viewpoints to represent the subject in a
greater context.
