Contemporary Issues in International Travel and Tourism Title CAMS Id No TT300U Level Programme 6 Credits 20 Pre Requisites None Aims To enable students to: • Critically evaluate key contemporary issues related to travel and tourism and evaluate how these are presented and examined by academics, the media and practitioners. Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding across a range of contemporary issues 2. Critically review and evaluate theoretical and practical accounts of travel and tourism issues 3. Research and synthesise literature on a contemporary issue 4. Discuss and evaluate the actions and policies that have been generated to deal with these issues Content This section is an indication of the type of contemporary issues that may be covered in this module. Student preference of topics, current and future debates in the industry will influence the subject areas covered. Undergraduate • Policy: sustainability, government role in key travel and tourism issues • Ethics: Corporate Social Responsibility, effectiveness of regulatory agencies legislation and practices, dark tourism • Exploitation: sex tourism, employment, drugs and fair trade • Globalisation and its effects: biodiversity, pollution, transport, global warming, water, social trends, cultural tourism • Safety and Security: airports, health, terrorist threats, legal implications • Global Risk and Disaster Issues: natural and man-made, destination rebuilding, crisis management Teaching and Learning Strategies Total Learner Hours: 200 Contact Hours: 48 consisting of lectures, seminars and tutorial format. A series of lectures will set the scene for the main topics and cover theoretical aspects related to issues. Guest speakers, both practitioners and academics, are seen as a key aspect to this module and will be invited as part of the lecture series. The seminars will enable students to lead a discussion on a contemporary issue of their choice. Tutorials will offer students individual support.
