Magellan of Virginia invites you to attend …. Transforming the cards Dealt: Adversity and Resiliency from theory to Practice Taught By: Dr. Allison Jackson, LCSW, CSOTP | System of Care Director Purpose: This foundational trauma perspective course introduces Anda & Felitti’s Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. The findings of this study revolutionized understanding the link between traumatic childhood experiences and adult well-being. It demonstrated trauma (ACEs) as the prime determinant of health and a critical public health issue facing us as a nation. In this two-part series, come prepared to: 1) Enhance your professional knowledge regarding the impact of ACEs on the children, youth, families, and adult members you serve. 2) Understand how to implement the Whole Child Assessment (C-ACEs) by Marie-Mitchell and O’Connor or the CYW ACE-Q by Dr. Nadine Harris’s Center for Youth Wellness and the Bayview Child Health Center. 3) Interpret key resiliency skills to be engaged in the case and treatment planning process utilizing work developed by Walla Walla Washington and the Children Resilience Initiative (ResilienceTrumpsACEs.org) Course Description: This foundational trauma perspective course introduces the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. In a collaborative effort between Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Preventative Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control, a cohort of over 17,000 middle class individuals from the United States with access to good health participated in this study looking at the impact of ten (10) categories of adverse childhood experiences (childhood trauma) and the risk for physical and mental illness in adulthood. Over the course of a decade, the results demonstrated a strong, graded relationship between the level of traumatic stress in childhood and poor physical, mental and behavioral outcomes later in life. The ACE Study offers strong evidence that trauma is indeed a national public health issue, in fact it is the number one public health issue as it is the common link between so many of the leading health concerns of our nation including: Cardiovascular disease Cancer Heart attacks High blood pressure Research indicates the more ACEs in the hands and experiences of our clients, the more risk factors they face and the more access to resources they will need to meet these challenges. With the raising awareness of the ACE studies, mental health professionals 1— *In Virginia, Magellan contracts as Magellan Healthcare, Inc., f/k/a Magellan Behavioral Health, Inc., which is a subsidiary of Magellan Health, Inc. have an opportunity to stay on the cutting edge of leading research that directly impacts not only their clients, but themselves. Seventy percent of ALL persons are impacted by at least one adverse child experience … and if you have one ACE in your hand, you are 80 percent more likely to have another. It is critical then for our own health and that of our clients to educate ourselves to our risks and resources for improving our overall well-being. This course will review the major findings of the ACE study and what they mean for our consumers and their family members. Participants will have the opportunity to review the Whole Child Assessment (C-ACEs only) and discuss how to integrate the use of this screening tool into their behavioral health practice and consumer education programming. Additionally, for use by physicians, nurse practitioners or physician assistants, the CYWACE-Q will be reviewed as well. Finally the course will explore the question of “so what”? Together we will look at practices that can enhance the well-being of our consumers and their communities. Utilizing the exciting work completed in Walla Walla (ResilienceTrumpsACEs.org) and across the state of Washington via Healthy Generations’ NEAR Science (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Resilience), we will review a case/treatment planning tool that helps therapeutic professionals co-create resiliency objectives with consumers that are based on the latest resiliency science from Washington State. Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to: 1) Verbalize 5 of the 10 Adverse Childhood Experience categories and how they relate to risk factors for physical well-being. 2) Verbalize 3-4 key medical conditions that are more likely to exist among individuals with higher ACE scores. 3) Verbalize how the Whole Child Assessment (C-ACEs only) can be utilized with caregivers, children and teens to enhance historical knowledge of physical and behavioral health risk factors. 4) Reflectively appraise 2 ways they might incorporate ACE understanding into their practices with members utilizing Resiliency Science.
