What is E-Smart?
Purpose
To establish a system of verifiable energy data with benchmarked facilities to:
• Assist in creating STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) learning and career
programs in the energy fields.
• Investigate, analyze and verify energy savings. Collaborate and share energy- saving
initiatives and resulting data with other schools, stakeholders and community.
Summary
The U. S. Department of Labor forecasts that the sustainable energy and energy
management sectors will double in size over the next several years.
• Through its high-performance school buildings, CPS saves $3 million in annual energy
costs.
• To make the best use of our LEED high-performance school facilities, CPS is developing
a comprehensive verifiable energy-savings program using real facilities’ data to educate
our students in the STEM energy fields.
• Emerging opportunities in the related energy fields will save resources and dollars.
• Students will take on real-world challenges to save resources, manage energy use and
audit energy data. Students will develop skills in building science and energy systems.
• Why? To prepare the energy auditors, technicians and managers of the future, and
provide employment opportunities in Cincinnati and across our region.

Single-Stream Recycling Districtwide
• Recycling education, promotion and supplies provided to all
schools to reinforce daily recycling practices.
• Monthly recycling weights obtained to track recycling efforts at
each school.
• Sustainability in Action (SIA) newsletter shares recycling results
and celebrates individual school achievements.
• A rebate of $15 per ton for recycling is received, with the
money put toward sustaining the program.
• Since August 2013, CPS students and staff have recycled
408 tons of waste — that's the weight of 54 African elephants!
• In 2014-15, CPS students and staff diverted from landfills
375 tons of waste -- more than four fully loaded semi-trucks!
• Goal for 2015-16 school year = 400 tons
