Iwona radiated positive energy, larger than life. Just being around her, your day feels sunnier. Iwona, pronounced Evana, is the enrichment leader in our neighborhood. I am so pleased to share her special story. Iwona is married with one child, David, who is 26. Iwona was born in Poland, arriving in the USA 28 years ago. Iwona is the oldest of three children. Sadly her father left the family to go to America when she was 14. It was Iwona’s dream to travel to America so she could help her mother. Her mother’s dream for her children was that they all attend college. This was a challenge for a single mother, and Iwona vowed to help her. She was 21 when she left Poland; she had finished college and become an RN. But when she arrived, she did not speak English. She babysat and cleaned houses, but she did not give up. Then she got a job as a CNA in a nursing home, where she said she realized her dream of working with seniors. Iwona worked there 13 years, mostly with seniors with dementia. Then she came home to Belmont Village. What drives her dedication to seniors? Iwona says she takes her job seriously, and she mentally prepares herself daily to provide our seniors the best day. Iwona is faithful and believes the love she has for her people is her energy source! Iwona personally loves arts and crafts, singing, and teaching history and nature lessons. Iwona is personally active and makes exercising fun. She feels her best with residents, smiling, focused and ready to start their day with her. Iwona said, “I am extremely passionate about making a difference in the lives of my residents”. Iwona loves to travel to National Parks. Hobbies include hiking, fishing/boating with family and then she slows down and enjoys a movie. Iwona’s son, David, will finish his engineering degree this year and then will pursue his master’s degree. (Story cont’d on Pg.6) Iwona & Maureen April Birthdays Circle of Friends Neighborhood News Resident Birthdays Craft projects remain a large component of the Circle of Friends curriculum. They’re fun but they also serve to challenge many areas of functioning such as hand/eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, task sequencing, & socialization. Circle 3 worked on a group project where everyone contributed either by painting or assisting to put the final project together. In the Neighborhood we will be working to enhance our opportunities for spiritual based programs. We are beginning to offer Shabbat services twice monthly to our residents along with having volunteers come in on Tuesday and Sunday weekly to offer Communion. Finally we are working to develop/add occasions for meditation and quiet reflection involving music. The residents enjoyed learning about what the equation, Density=Mass divided by Volume, means. They had fun predicting if objects would float or sink. They also learned that diet sodas float and regular sodas sink because the density in a regular soda is higher. Do you know why? Can you guess? Yes, it’s all the sugar! Peggy adorning her project!
