50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION SPRING 2011 CIRCLE OF LIGHT NEWS AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL USA’S PLANNED GIVING NEWSLETTER Golden Anniversary, Golden Opportunity mnesty International was born 50 years ago when British lawyer Peter Benenson took action on behalf of “forgotten prisoners.” In 1961, moved by a report about two Portuguese students who were imprisoned for raising a toast to freedom, he published a now famous article in the London newspaper The Observer. In the piece, he urged readers to write letters supporting such “prisoners of conscience.” His appeal sparked an international grassroots campaign to protect human rights. Within six months, delegates from seven countries met to establish a permanent organization that would not forget. A Over the past five decades, Amnesty International has grown into a global movement of more than three million members, supporters, and activists in over 150 countries. Our collective action has achieved remarkable results, recognized by the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize and the 1978 United Nations Human Rights Prize. With your support, we have helped win freedom for tens of thousands of people imprisoned unjustly and helped defend the human rights of millions more. We have helped to prevent torture, halt lifethreatening persecution, and commute death sentences. defenders. We have also been instrumental in building the groundswell of public support necessary to establish an international human rights framework of treaties and institutions that bring war criminals to justice, ban torture, and eliminate discrimination. Amnesty International’s golden anniversary represents a golden opportunity—not only to celebrate what we have achieved, but also to think about what still must be done to protect and promote international human rights. Independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest, or religion, Amnesty International relies on your support, including planned gifts. Your commitment will enable us to continue our vital human rights work for the next 50 years! By shining a light on human rights violations around the globe and focusing unrelenting public pressure on those responsible, we have protected and empowered countless human rights Members celebrate AI’s 50th Anniversary at the AGM Opening Ceremonies. Amnesty Honors Circle of Light Members t the Annual General Meeting, AIUSA took time to Director of Advocacy, Policy, and Research; and Jill honor members of the Circle of Light for their Wasserman, Director of Planned Giving, who spoke about commitment to the future of justice and human rights. AIUSA’s history, current programs, and successes. A Nearly a thousand members strong, these individuals have named Amnesty as a beneficiary of their will, trust, life insurance policy, or retirement plan or have established a charitable gift annuity providing them with payments for life. In the warmth of San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel, AIUSA held a tea to thank Circle of Light members for their lasting contributions to the human rights movement through their planned gifts—gifts that will ensure Amnesty’s ability to continue our lifesaving work for generations to come. The event brought together longtime friends and supporters of Amnesty from across the country in a lively mix of ages, backgrounds, and interests. Amnesty family participating in the event included Larry Cox, Executive Director of AIUSA; Rachel Ward, Deputy Executive Our special guests at the tea were Jenni Williams and Magondonga Mahlangu, courageous activists from the human rights organization Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA). For organizing peaceful demonstrations to protest the worsening social, economic, and human rights situation in Zimbabwe, WOZA members have been repeatedly harassed, intimidated, beaten, and jailed by authorities. Jenni and Magondonga have both been arrested more than 20 times for their work. WOZA remains a priority case for Amnesty International. Pictured here are some of the Circle of Light members who attended the tea. We are grateful to all Circle of Light members for their commitment to human rights and provision for the protection of those rights everywhere! Rachel Ward, Deputy Executive Director, updates Circle of Light members on AI’s current work and successes to prevent violence against women. WOZA leaders describe their struggle for equality for the people of Zimbabwe. Amnesty Honors Circle of Light Members “We believe the protection of human rights is the most important issue we face today. That is why we support Amnesty International and its courageous work that brings real, tangible results.” –Ann Robb and Michel Cam Circle of Light members engage in lively conversation. “When I joined AI many years ago, it was one of the very few organizations working on ensuring human rights and to get prisoners of conscience released. The current work that AI does with women and women’s rights is one reason I keep renewing my membership in AI and have put them in my will. Imprisoned women activists suffer double jeopardy and really need extra attention from AI members. Keep up the good work!” –Cherrill Spencer Circle of Light member Cherrill Spencer talks with Jill Wasserman, Director of Planned Giving. Our Recommended Language to Include Amnesty International USA in Your Estate Plans To name AIUSA as a beneficiary of your will or trust, we recommend using the following language: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $_______ (or, ____ percent of my residuary estate) to Amnesty International USA, currently located at 5 Penn Plaza, New York, NY 10001, Federal tax identification number 52-0851555, for its general purposes.” Annual General Meeting Marks Anniversary mnesty International USA (AIUSA) began a year-long commemoration of its 50th anniversary with an extraordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) in San Francisco. The three-day conference (March 1820) combined joyful celebration with serious discussion, exploring Amnesty International’s past, present, and future. Within the framework of the AGM, members of the Circle of Light were honored at a special event (see description inside). A The AGM opening ceremonies featured a message from former President Jimmy Carter, a welcome speech by the mayor of San Francisco, accolades from state legislators and members of Congress, and performances by several of San Francisco’s multicultural arts groups. The ceremonies also included the presentation of the first AIUSA Artist Award to Joan Baez. The award recognized her nearly four decades of dedication to AIUSA, which began in 1972 when she took a year off from her music career to organize AIUSA’s expansion to the West Coast. The Artist Award will be named for Baez and given annually to an artist demonstrating a similar commitment to human rights. The AGM program offered opportunities to participate in and shape AIUSA’s human rights advocacy through workshops, long-term strategy sessions, and the resolutions process. The program included panels with inspiring speakers, films with archival footage from Amnesty’s remarkable history, and other activities to connect activists with one another. A highlight of the program was an electrifying phone call to a plenary session from Aung San Suu Kyi, graciously thanking Amnesty International for the support she had received during her long years under house arrest and urging that we not forget the many others who are still not free. All images © Amnesty International To engage the next generation of human rights activists, the AGM sponsored the first national Youth Summit. Held at the University of California, Berkeley, the Summit offered a platform for youth (ages 14-25) to learn about Amnesty and take part in a Call to Action. The Summit included skill-building workshops and discussions with experts and celebrities that will take campus activism to a new level. The AGM is just one of the signature events that AIUSA is holding to commemorate the 50th anniversary and involve more people in human rights advocacy. Circle of Light Donors — Pointing our light to the future The Circle of Light was created by Amnesty International USA’s Board of Directors to honor those members and friends who have made a commitment to stop future human rights abuses wherever and whenever they occur. The following individuals have provided for AIUSA in one or more of the following ways: included a bequest in their will or living trust, named AIUSA as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy, and/or established a charitable trust or charitable gift annuity to benefit AIUSA. Please join the nearly 1,000 current members representing every state in the nation and abroad who have already established their legacy to perpetuate the mission of AIUSA.
