STAFF PROFILE
David has worked at
Marine Mates for close
to a year now and is
loving every day. He
has always enjoyed
everything
that
is
around or underneath
water, since his first time fishing for
rainbows and perch down the east coast
of Australia. He has always had the
pleasure of the company of large
aquariums in various styles in his family
home. Some of his fondest memories, as
a child, are of his eldest brother breeding
African cichlids for sale in the Cichlid
Society auctions in Sydney. His brother
had thirty-two x 2 foot tanks set up for
breeding and three 5x2x2s for growing up
young, so that the knowledge and
experience with handling fish and fry
which David gained was great.
David has kept and bred a broad range of
fish himself from Natives, Cichlids, Discus
and Tropicals but he is also now
interested in aquascaping and marine
aquariums. He feels there is always
something to learn or something new to
try when keeping a live eco system in
your own home. The layout of plants,
rocks and wood in a fresh water aquarium
(or corals and live rock for salt water
aquariums), can change the whole feel
and look of a room or even the entire
house.
David has good knowledge of planted
aquariums and Co2 injection systems,
most fresh water fish and eco sump
setups for fresh/saltwater aquariums. He
also maintains a few aquariums and
ponds for a disability organisation called
Interchange Respite Care. The enjoyment
on the kids’ faces and the calming effects
on them make the aquariums invaluable.

MARINE OF THE MONTH
TRACHYPHYLLIA CORAL
This is a very easy to keep coral which
comes in a variety of colours. The fleshy
polyp will expand to at least twice the size
of the hard skeleton so it may be
necessary to adjust its initial position in
the tank as once it opens up it may be
touching the glass, other corals etc.
Trachys are not known as bad ‘stingers’
of other corals but it is best not to have
corals touching wherever possible. These
corals will derive some food from the
zooxanthellae algae present in the coral
tissue but will also filter feed. Liquid
invertebrate foods such as Cyclop-eze
can be fed and you will see the feeding
tentacles extend once the coral senses
the food in the water. It is recommended
that this coral should not be placed in a
totally horizontal position as unless there
is a vigorous flow of water in the tank,
dirt can accumulate on the polyp to the
detriment of the coral.
TRACHYPHYLLIA NORMALLY $27.00
ONLY TILL SOLD OUT $22.00

CPR AQUATIC OVERFLOW BOX
NEW
This
product
is
designed to syphon
water down to a
sump type filter
underneath the tank,
either fresh or salt
water.
Regular
syphons can not be
used
for
this
purpose as if the power is disconnected,
all of the water in the tank can drain out.
This product is a double syphon which
will maintain the syphon if the power is
off and will automatically restart when
power is resumed. It also acts as a
prefilter for the main filter beneath the
tank.
A common problem with this type of
overflow is the growth of algae within the
box which, whilst not harmful, looks
unsightly. To assist in preventing this, a
black top is used to cut light and reduce
the growth of algae.
The overflow box is adjustable to fit most
aquariums. It is especially useful where
an aquarist wishes to add a sump type
filter, such as a Miracle Mud filter, to an
existing tank and there is no inbuilt
overflow in the aquarium. Even with a
new setup you may prefer to have the
option not to have the tank drilled. Should
you be planning to upgrade your existing
tank for a larger one you could consider
setting up an additional filter on your
current tank, along with the Aquatic
Overflow Box, and ‘running in’ the filter
before moving it to the new tank, saving
you that agonizing wait whilst conditioning
your new tank.
If you visit the manufacturer’s website,
there is an excellent video on the usage
and setting up of the Aquatic Overflow
Box. Go to:
www.cpraquatic.com/products/overflows.
html and you will find the video half way
down the page. There are also printable
instructions for setting up the overflow
box.
The CPR Aquatic Overflow Box is
available now - $299.00.
FRESHWATER FISH OF THE MONTH
GUPPIES
Although often thought of as just a
common fish, guppies can be one of the
most beautiful of all tropical aquarium
fish. A nicely planted tank full of male
guppies is a sight to behold.
It is almost unbelievable the number of
colours and patterns available in guppies.
Males, of course, are much more
colourful and have more impressive tails
than the females.
They are perhaps one of the easiest fish
to breed. They are live bearing fish with
the female producing easily twenty babies
every six weeks or so. They do, however,
eat their own young so the babies have to
be removed or provided with a lot of plant
in which to hide if you wish to grow up
some of your own guppies. In a
community tank, sadly most of the babies
will be eaten.
If you are wanting to keep guppies for
display only, then it may be best to keep
just males or else you will need to have at
least three females for each male. This is
because the males will harass the
females to breed and can injure them at
times if there are not many females to
males in the tank. Although a peaceful
species, the males will often have their
long flowing tails ripped by other fish in a
community setup and so they should be
kept either with very small peaceful fish or
just with other guppies.
Guppies are a true tropical species and
should be kept heated in winter. Although
some hardy guppies will sometimes
survive without a heater, the loss rate is
usually very high especially for the first
few generations.
Male guppies are normally $4.70

FRESHWATER PLANT OF THE MONTH
GIANT AMBULIA
This month’s plant
would have to be a
favourite with most
aquarists. It’s lime
green
colouration
combined with fine,
fluffy foliage makes
this a real standout in
the aquarium. Giant
ambulia is a tropical
plant which grows well from cuttings and
is sold in a bunch. It can be planted that
way or the pieces can be separated out to
plant singly or in smaller groups. Normally
$4.70 - JULY PRICE $3.95 PER BUNCH.

Diseases of Fish - POP EYE
Pop eye is not just any
one disease – it can be
caused by a number of
things and occurs in both
fresh water and salt water
fish. Fish generally exhibit
a swelling of the membrane of the eye
and this can be one eye or both.
Sometimes there will be clouding of the
membrane. If there is an actual bubble in
or on the eye then this is more likely
caused by very fine air bubbles in the
tank and is not classified as Pop Eye.
The first thing to check, if your fish are
exhibiting symptoms of Pop Eye, is the
water quality, especially pH and ammonia
levels. As with many diseases a water
change may well be in order.
One of the most common causes of Pop
Eye is bacterial eye infections and this
can be treated with medications such as
Tri Sulfa. This may also be useful in the
case of actual damage to the eye which
can be caused by rough handling or
fighting with tank mates. Vitamin A
deficiencies can also be a cause so make
sure that your fish are fed a balanced diet
and perhaps use a vitamin supplement
especially while the fish is affected. A
harder to treat cause can be a kidney
infection. As with most diseases, good
water quality and a stress free
environment will go a long way to
preventing Pop Eye.
ATTENTION: JUST ANNOUNCED
The Queensland Government has just
announced that as from August 1, 2009
the list of noxious fish, prohibited to be
kept in Queensland, will expand from the
current 18 to more than 70 fish. Very few
are common aquarium fish but you can
check out both the new and current lists
at:
www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dpi/hs.xsl/28
_12632_ENA_HTML.htm. As from August
1 you can not trade, sell or breed any of
these species. You can apply for a permit
to see if you can keep noxious fish which
you already have or arrange for them to
be surrendered.
