THANKYOU
Dear CUREageous Friends and Supporters,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Illinois CancerCare Foundation CUREageous event!!! Now in its sixth year, this evening’s festivities
will celebrate patients and their family members, caregivers, physicians, researchers, and staff who work tirelessly to battle cancer throughout central Illinois. Thank you SO MUCH for being part of our celebration! Since last year’s event, much has been accomplished in the
areas of clinical research, education, and patient assistance.
The Foundation provided $400,000 to support the shortfall in the clinical cancer research program which accelerates the development of
interventions for preventing, treating, recovering from and curing cancer. This support helped:
• Physicians and staff to co-author a number of peer
reviewed medical journal articles including the treatment
of lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and lymphoma as well
as assessment of patient adherence to oral chemotherapy
agents and possible genetic factors to help predict which
patients will develop chemo-inducted neuropathy.
• Enrolled over 130 patients in more than 40 different clinical
trials encompassing more than 11 different cancer types.
• Provide two research patient navigators to screen patients
daily for our 12 clinic locations for clinical trial opportunities.
• Follow more than 600 patients who have participated in
clinical trials prior to 2015.
We continue to provide needed assistance to our patients in a number of other areas:
• Fuel cards are provided to clinical cancer trial participants
who face financial barriers.
• A community partnership in a comprehensive breast cancer
risk assessment program and follow up assistance for breast
cancer patients.
• A community partnership to study the effects of Taxane on
balance in breast cancer patients.
• Compression garments and therapy for cancer survivors.
• Imaging and echocardiograms for clinical trials participants not
considered routine care by insurance companies.
• Educational programming on prostate and hereditary breast cancer.
• Trust in Hope continues to provide support to patients and
their families during the holidays.
Support continues for the genetic screening program for families at risk for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC or Lynch
Syndrome) as well as studies that offer targeted oral therapies to patients whose tumors have “driver mutations” found through molecular
sequencing. Thanks to generous contributions to the Illinois CancerCare Foundation, eligible patients can receive financial assistance for
their genetic testing and tumor sequencing when needed.
Hope. It is one of the most important therapies during a cancer diagnosis. Your participation this evening
provides genuine hope and loving compassion to those forever touched by cancer. On behalf of our Board
of Directors, Advisors, & Young Leaders, and our CUREageous event committee, thank you for joining us
and for giving so generously.
With sincere appreciation,
Tonda L. Tompson | Executive Director

The most significant changes I have seen
since I started my career in research is
Biological Response Modifiers, Targeted
Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Check Point

care medications.
If you were given all the money

would it be dedicated?
I would give the money to a project to help
healthcare providers avoid burnout.
The best part of my work is the dedicated

My hobby outside of work is to try and

ROCK DOCS
DR. ZAHANGIR KHALED Pediatric GI | UnityPoint Health- Methodist
Tell us about your current research.
Constipation is a common problem in
children. About 25% of the children who visit
pediatric gastroenterologist are constipated;
5% of office visits to pediatrician are for
constipation. Chronic constipation can lead
to health problems. Constipation in children
is commonly treated with stool softeners,
but for some children the medications fail to
control constipation. This group of patients
requires an invasive procedure. I am doing
a clinical trial with “AMITIZA” in children.
“AMITIZA” is a FDA approved constipation
medicine for adults. The mechanism of
constipation in children is different from
adults. The study will help discover the
efficacy and safety of this medicine in children.
If effective and safe this medication will help
to prevent invasive surgical procedures for
constipation management in children.
I am also involved in clinical study of
Remicade in pediatric Crohn’s disease
and probiotics.
What has been the most
significant change you have seen
in your field of medicine (due to
research) since you started?
Better understanding of the causes of poor
colonic motility has improved treatment.

If you were given all the money

would it be dedicated?
Cancer, Autoimmune diseases and Obesity
What are some of your hobbies
outside of work?
Traveling around the world with focus on
historical sites and culture. I also enjoy
spending my free time with my pet goats.
What made you choose the
research that you are doing now?
I want to find an effective and safe
treatment for children with chronic
constipation who are refractory to
common stool softener. The research
may help to control constipation with
new pharmacologic treatment and prevent
invasive procedures.
Tell us about the best part
of your work.
I love a challenge. The most difficult part
of my research work is to convince the
frustrated parents to participate in the
trial. I love that most.
ROCK DOCS CO N T I N U E D
DR. LISA SNYDER Physiatry | OSF IPMR
Tell us about your current research.
Currently at OSF/IPMR there is an ongoing study on
the effects of taxane chemotherapy on balance and
breast cancer patients. From these findings, targeted
interventions, if required, could be developed to
minimize disability from balance dysfunction. Through
OSF/IPMR, we will be initiating clinical studies to
evaluate outcomes after specific physical therapy
protocols for different diagnoses. We are still working
on the specifics.
What has been the most significant change
you have seen in your field of medicine
(due to research) since you started?
The importance of functional outcome measurements
in physical medicine and rehabilitation has increased
over the last several years. There are numerous
tools to measure success in different aspects of
rehabilitation care. This helps to identify successful
programs and also identify clinicians that are skilled
in a particular area and that achieve the most
effective results. Also, the importance of exercise
has been well documented in numerous studies
over the last several years. The benefits of exercise
include improved cardiovascular and respiratory
function, reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors,
decreasing morbidity and mortality, decreased
anxiety and depression, improving cognitive function,
enhancing physical function and independent living in
older individuals, enhancing feelings of well-being, and
reducing the risk of falls in older individuals.
If you were given all the money in the world,
to which project would it be dedicated?
Lifestyle choices are the most important factor in
determining the quality and length of an individual’s
life. These include diet, environment, exercise, drug
and tobacco use and stress management. A project
that would address how best to influence these
factors to help individuals, families and cultures to
make the right choices to promote better healthcare
would be daunting, but if successful the results could
be phenomenal.
What are some of your hobbies outside
of work?
I enjoy gardening very much. Most of all I enjoy
spending time with my family. My older children are
living in different cities so my husband and I like to
take time to visit them. I also enjoy repairing and
refinishing old furniture.
What made you choose the
research that you are doing now?
Physical medicine and rehab has traditionally
focused on recovery from serious health events.
The focus now has been more to try to prevent
some of these events from occurring in the first
place by identifying risk factors early on and
helping individuals address these risk factors
appropriately. Research delving into population
health management and best practice protocols for
physical medicine and rehabilitation are something
I am interested in looking into.
Tell us about the best part of your work.
Having the opportunity to get to know my patients
has been a privilege over the years. That is by far
the greatest reward. This has been possible only
by the support of a strong clinical staff as well as
devoted administrators and board of directors.
