2013-2014 Annual Report Restoring At-Risk Neighborhoods, One Life at a Time A Letter from KidWorks’ Executive Leadership A Year in Review Faith. Empowerment. Respect. These are the core values of KidWorks. Preschool Faith, to demonstrate God’s love and Christ-like values in all we do. Empowerment, to educate and develop leaders. Respect, to affirm the dignity of every person. For over twenty years, these guiding principles have led our every action and decision when helping children and families living in some of the most crime-ridden and lowest income neighborhoods of central Santa Ana, California. At KidWorks, these values are not just something we say, they are at the core of what we do. When people ask us what makes KidWorks different, we reply that KidWorks transforms lives. Countless moms, dads, and graduates tell us, with tears of joy, about what our services have meant to their family—restored relationships, success in school, personal transformation, and hope for the future. We do not take lightly our mission to restore at-risk neighborhoods one life at a time. And it is only because of supporters like you—our donors, volunteers, staff members, parents, and youth leaders—that we can make a critical impact to help children and families and improve communities, not only in Santa Ana, but in Orange County and beyond. It is because you care and give your time, talent, and treasure that we are able to … have preschool teachers instruct young at-risk children so that they are ready for Kindergarten … provide tutoring for students struggling in school … take teenagers to visit their first college campus … develop youth leaders who advocate for safe and healthy community change … and give the necessary tools and guidance to parents and caregivers to support their family’s well-being. • 100% of preschool students (48 of 48) were assessed as “Kindergarten-ready.” • 5,935 books in total were read by all the families. • 100% of preschool families volunteered in the classroom and 48% of those parents completed more than 30 volunteer hours. • 96% of preschool parents attended at least one Kindergarten Readiness workshop. “University Starts Now” After-school Program • 387 children, K-12th grade, participated in our daily after-school program. • 96% of 12th grade students (23 of 24) graduated from high school. • 91% of high school graduates (21 of 23) have enrolled in college or university. Rosa Achieving Balance Rosa is a 16-year-old junior at Godinez High School. She is also a proud member of Mensa, an international society that accepts individuals with an IQ in the top 2% of the population. She is mature and thoughtful about her plans for the future. Last year she took the PSAT twice, and is studying hard in preparation for taking the SAT this spring. With KidWorks’ encouragement and support, Rosa has been able to tour local colleges, including USC and Chapman, and she is deciding if she wants to stay in California or attend a college on the East Coast. In addition to school, Rosa likes to paint and draw, as well as participate in Mensa competitions. In the fall of 2013, a friend invited Rosa to join the Youth Empowerment Network at KidWorks. Rosa loved meeting new friends and found herself drawn to the newly formed SAHNA: the Santa Ana Health and Nutrition Advocates. The SAHNA group, made up of junior high and high school students living in at-risk neighborhoods served by KidWorks, decided to focus this year on obesity and school meal programs. Since starting the program, they have worked with the Santa Ana Unified School District to understand the tight federal nutritional parameters, and the limited budget the district must abide by. Their first effort was to work with representatives at the school district to reinstate salad bars at the high schools and increase the salad bar offerings to include additional items, like garbanzo beans, mandarin oranges, as well as different types of lettuce – not just iceberg. All of Santa Ana’s high schools, with only one exception, were able to support the SAHNA Salad Bar initiative. By participating in SAHNA, one of KidWorks’ youth leadership groups, Rosa realized how much she enjoyed research and making presentations - she’s learned valuable skills in public speaking, fact-based research and how to work collaboratively with fellow students and district representatives to improve her community. As Rosa considers college and what she would like to focus on, she has decided that public health, with a focus on educational nutrition is something she is passionate about. Thanks to the KidWorks Youth Empowerment Network, Rosa knows that one of her life-long goals is to continue making a difference in people’s lives. 2013-2014 Annual Report 4 touching lives with hope Javier From Townsend Street to UCLA Central Santa Ana is full of violence, poverty, gangs, crime, and drugs. It’s tough here, and you have to be tough to grow up in my neighborhood. The gangs are always after you – you either join a gang, or you are a target. I’m one of the lucky ones, my family is close. My parents are still together and my dad works long, hard days as a carpenter. As a teenager, I helped him when I could, but the work was physically too exhausting. I got a job at a florist shop six miles away from home, but sometimes my bike would break down and I would have to leave it on the street and run to get to work on time. I needed to work to help my family, but it was hard to balance school and work. I had tunnel vision, I couldn’t see past tomorrow, past next week. My mom insisted that my sisters and I attend KidWorks after-school programs for homework help and mentoring. In high school I had good enough grades to get into a private college in Indiana, but we couldn’t afford the tuition. I felt like my options were really limited, I was going to end up being a laborer, like the men in my neighborhood. When I started community college, I thought I would get an associate’s degree and perhaps become a technician of some sort. But then things started happening for me…. My mentor at KidWorks suggested I apply for a position that had opened up there. My college guidance counselor told me how to apply for financial aid, and how to apply to my dream school UCLA. I applied to KidWorks and was hired as a program leader. I began helping kids like I used to be - faced with the daily onslaught of living in the toughest neighborhood in the toughest city in America. I began to make a real difference, and that felt really good. At KidWorks, I learned to take the hard lessons of my neighborhood and turn them into strength. I encouraged the children to take their first courageous steps away from the known path of poverty, gangs and drugs, and to pursue education and career possibilities they have never dreamed of. The day I found out I was accepted at UCLA, with financial aid, was the greatest day of my life! I was already the first in my family to attend college, and now I was accepted at a prestigious university. Today, I am attending UCLA where I am majoring in History. I don’t ever hide who I am, or where I came from. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and how much I have to give. KidWorks showed me that I have the same strength and courage that I see in the kids I now mentor – and I stand tall and proud. I wouldn’t be here Rosiesela A Simple Snack Rosiesela is in first grade, she is a petite little girl who is a bundle of energy; she has two speeds – ON and ASLEEP. Rosiesela has been participating in KidWorks afterschool program for the past two years. Our trained staff assists the students with homework and act as mentors, and our committed volunteers work with students in small groups and one on one. Once homework is complete, staff members use this opportunity to teach important character building lessons and conflict resolution skills that are so crucial to children who live in distressed situations. Rosiesela has thrived in the KidWorks program, eagerly participating in the lessons and playing with her new friends. KidWorks (through a partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank) provides a robust afternoon snack of a sandwich, a piece fruit and milk. The snack is hearty and keeps her full and focused until dinnertime. This year, when it came time for re-enrollment, Rosiesela’s mom, Reyna, wasn’t sure she could swing the annual enrollment fee and didn’t inquire about the payment options or how to volunteer to offset the enrollment fee. It was a hard choice for Rosiesela’s mom, but she decided to pull her out of KidWorks and enrolled her in the public school’s free afterschool program. (Families are charged a nominal annual fee to participate in the KidWorks programs, ensuring consistent student participation and family commitment. Families who cannot afford the annual fee can make arrangements as program or event volunteers.) Although Rosiesela enjoyed her school’s afternoon program and playing with her friends, the snack provided just wasn’t very robust, and already petite Rosiesela began losing weight. Her grades starting slipping, she wasn’t studying in the afternoon and she didn’t have the energy to participate fully in class. Reyna knew she had to make a change. KidWorks’ staff reached out to Reyna to let her know that she could volunteer to offset the annual fee - Reyna immediately re-enrolled Rosiesela. Today Rosiesela is back to her old self - full of boundless energy, curiosity and fun. Sometimes a real life transformation begins with just a simple snack. without Kidworks! 2013-2014 Annual Report touching lives with hope 7 Oilicec & Alondra Thank You Donors A Shining Light Alondra and Oilicec are polite, charming, and full of giggles. You can tell how close the sisters are; they finish each other’s sentences and remind one another of family stories. Alondra is in 6th grade and 11 years old, she exhibits a quiet poise and maturity that makes her seem older. At 8 years old, Oilicec is a bouncy counterpart to her sister’s watchful ways; she is full of fun, interesting stories and a real sense of adventure. Both girls are beautifully mannered and gracious, a true testament of character formation happening at KidWorks. Their parent’s recent divorce has tested these lovely girls, and with support from KidWorks staff and volunteer mentors, they’ve come through stronger and more resilient. For nearly six months, the girls didn’t know their father had moved out. Their mother tried to cushion the blow by saying he had gotten a job out of town; however they eventually learned that Dad was gone for good. For a while their grandmother and uncle moved in to help financially, but the bigger apartment the family had shared was ultimately too expensive to keep (their mother works as a cake decorator), and they moved to a smaller two bedroom apartment. Now, Alondra and Oilicec share a bedroom with their mother and the other bedroom is rented out. Spreading Hope Sharing a bedroom with two other people may sound crowded but, fortunately, Oilicec views things in a more positive light. She is a little frightened to sleep next to the window, so for her it’s a comfort to sleep with mom and being able to crawl into her bed for a snuggle. The girls don’t bicker or fight about toys, but the lack of closet space and a yard to play in is tough on all of them. Donations from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 The best part of the girls’ day is afternoons spent at KidWorks. Here they get the additional $25,000 - $49,999 Craig Realty Group Paula and Patrick Donahue Irvine Health Foundation Kern County Superintendent of Schools Jeri and Danny McKenna Orange County United Way Public Health Institute Star Rock Ministries Tarsadia Foundation U.S. Bank help with homework that they need – Alondra is passionate about attending college and becoming a dentist, and Oilicec would like to use her artistic gifts as an elementary school art teacher. Even in their rough neighborhood, and with their mother working as much as possible to support their little family, the dreams of these two amazing girls are well within their reach. Since we found out about the divorce, staff and volunteer mentors have spent many hours talking to the girls, as well as advising the girls and their mother on how to achieve their goals. This little family that was once broken, is becoming whole. $250,000+ The California Endowment $100,000 - $249,999 NBC Universal Foundation SAJE Foundation $50,000 - $99,999 American Career College/West Coast University Bank of America Merrill Lynch Wells Fargo TELACU The Sacred Harvest Foundation Toyota Financial Services Ueberroth Family Foundation $10,000 - $25,000 Anonymous Stacey and Greg Brown California Center for Civic Participation California Mortgage Bankers Association Valerie and Larry Casey CBRE City of Santa Ana Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP Devon and Kevin Martin Dhont Family Foundation Donahue Schriber Edison Edwards Lifesciences Eibach Springs, Inc.
