PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We have now completed our first full week of school. Students have adjusted very well into their new
classrooms and have spent the week getting to know their new teachers and all of their classmates. We are
all looking forward to another great year of learning at Mary Jane Shannon Elementary.
NEW FORMAT FOR MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT
Our Meet the Teacher Night has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 20th from 5:30 – 6:30 pm.
Please go to your child’s class to meet their teacher and to look around the room. This is a time to see your
child’s learning environment and to begin to get to know their teachers. This is not a time to discuss your
child’s progress as it is simply too soon. If you have more than one child please make sure that you have
visited all of the classes by 6:10 pm. At this time we will call all families and teachers to the gym to meet all
of our MJS teachers. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
SCHOOL ORGANIZATION
As noted above, students have been moved into their new classrooms. The goal of this process is to ensure
that students are placed in an appropriate learning environment with a balance of gender, academic, and
social emotional needs. The maximum number of students allotted in each class is determined by the
Province and is strictly adhered to at all grade levels.
There are times when the change to a new classroom and teacher can be upsetting to a child. Typically this
upset disappears within a day or two following this change. Please share your child’s concerns with the
school if needed so that we can work with you to ensure a healthy transition.
TERRY FOX
. one dollar…..). Starting Monday, September 19th
Terry's dream (“if every person in Canada brought in just
we will be collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. We encourage all students to bring in their
coins as we will be collecting until Friday, September 30th. All donations will go to the Terry Fox
Foundation for Cancer research. On Thursday, September 29th MJS students will be running for Terry. We
will begin with a short assembly at 9:30 am and run will begin after assembly at approximately 9:50 am.
Students will run laps around MJS school grounds. Parents are welcome to come and join us.
BREAKFAST CLUB
Our breakfast club opened on Tuesday, September 13th. Please note that breakfast will be available from
7:50 - 8:25 am each day and is available in our “Treehouse” space accessed through the side door at the
front of the school. From a safety perspective, we ask no child arrives to school prior to 7:50 am. If your
child does not attend the Breakfast club and is not scheduled for a school activity, we ask that they do not
arrive prior to our supervision time of 8:20 am.
LUNCH PROGRAM
Please make sure your forms are returned to school if you would like your child to participate in the lunch
program. You must sign up each month to participate. October notice will be going home shortly.
HEALTHY SNACKS, LUNCHES AND DRINKS
We are encouraging all of our students to focus on healthy snacks and lunches at school. We would like to
see our students eating fruits and veggies for both snacks and lunch. Health and Nutrition is part of our
curriculum and ensuring that our students are eating healthy food everyday is helping to give them the best
conditions for learning. We are also encouraging students to bring water bottles from home. Drinking lots of
water throughout the day keeps our students well hydrated without adding any sugar that many packaged
drinks have. Please do not send any pop to school with your child. Pop creates a sweet and sticky
environment which encourages ants and wasps. Thank you in advance for your help with packing healthy
lunches.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
All students should have now brought in all their school supplies for the year. If you need a new list please
come to the office to pick one up. No student will do without due to financial reasons.
