Frahm's Rules
Eau Gallie High School
RULES - T H I N K
This class begins when the tardy bell rings - be in your seat and copy the opening activity.
(3 or more trades = N in conduct on your report card)
Hall Passes are required to leave class, limited to four a nine weeks.
In order for the entire class to learn, ONLY ANSWER WHEN CALLED UPON.
No food, hats, sunglasses, electronics, or anything else in class that is not conducive to learning.
Know that when you're absent, life goes on. It is YOUR responsibility to make up missed work.
THINK and you'll not need these rules. "All Progress, all
success, springs from thinking."(Thomas Edison) Each student in this
class has the potential of becoming whatever you dream, if you set
goals for yourself. Mathematics is the key to unlocking the mysteries
of the future, and can help us master the objective of thinking.
CONSEQUENCES - for not THINKing.
1st time – warning (time to re-evaluate objectives and goals).
2nd time – begin referral (first strike)
3rd time –. second strike on referral, with parent contact
4th time – third stride, then the referral is sent to the assistant
principal for administrative action.
REWARDS - Grades (used as a method of measuring knowledge, NOT for punishment)
1)
Tests each chapter (counts 40% of nine weeks grade)
2)
Homework Quiz (counts 30% of nine weeks grade. I will drop one quiz a nine weeks.)
3)
Homework/Classwork (30% of nine weeks grade) is every day for practice, and is NOT busy work, it
must be done in pencil, copy each problem, and you MUST SHOW YOUR WORK
+ 10 points,  8 points, - 5 points Assignments can be found on www.edline.net
4)
Journal - your account of what you've learned.
5)
Activities/Projects/Book Review - Problem Solving, Creative Thinking, and Reading Mathematics.
6)
Extra Credit (once a nine weeks): report or poster on mathematics applications/extensions (2 resources)
MATERIALS Tools for success (students must have these every day):
 8 1/2 x 11 Spiral Notebook for the journal.
 Calculator: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN (TI-84, Casio fx 9750G or fx 9860G)

Journal Writing
WHAT should you write in your journal? New words or ideas, formulas, concepts you've learned.
The Essential Question each day. Thoughts you've had or wonderings and reflections on problems to solve.
Questions - both homework and classwork. Tell me how you're doing in class. We use the Cornell Style school
wide, and you will lose points not doing Cornell Notes. (NOTE: this is not a diary - please tell me in person
after class of personal things bothering you)
WHEN should you write in your journal? Every day at:
 the beginning of each class, copy and attempt the opening activity (bonus on homework).
 the end of the period write a review of what you learned, answer the essential question for the day.
 the time you are preparing, reading or studying for class, or anytime an insight or question hits you
write about what will help you.
WHY should you write in your journal? It will record ideas that you might otherwise forget. It will be
worthwhile for you to read and study for tests and quizzes. It will facilitate your learning, problem solving,
writing skills, reading skills and discussions in this class. Research shows that you will forget 41.8% of what
you learn after 20 minutes, 55.8% after 1 hour, 66.3% after 1 day, 84.6% after 1 week, and 98% after 1 month.
Journal writing can help you retain what you've learned, giving you an advantage for the future. You can use
your journal on every quiz.
Journals will be kept in your homework notebook (much the same as the science interactive notebook),
and will graded scored day on your homework grade (10 points). I allow you to use the notes on every quiz,
but not on the tests. You will receive a draft grade on your interim report, if you revise the format and content
the grade can go up. In the event that the grade goes down by the end of the term, the grades will be averaged.

Dear Students and Parents:
The use of classroom calculators in this age of information technology has become as
necessary as paper and pencil. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics indicates that
calculator use will enhance student learning. "Technologies can help students understand
mathematical processes, develop and explore mathematical concepts, and create algebraic and
geometric representations of problem situations; calculators can turn the mathematics classroom into
a laboratory in which students are active partners in the learning process."
Students WILL need their OWN calculator. Some calculators will be available for use in
the classroom. Our goal is to enable students to reach further in mathematics and technology. Be
assured that by the end of the year your student will have learned how to use all the features of
whichever calculator you choose to purchase. There are many calculators that can accomplish what
will be necessary for this class and beyond, including advanced Statistics and Calculus. I have one
concern regarding the TI calculators, many students are downloading games that they try to play in
class, and as yet I’ve not seen any games for the Casio.
