Ratio Tables Teacher Notes Objective Use ratio tables to represent and solve problems involving equivalent ratios. Use these worksheets if students have trouble • writing ratios • solving proportional relationships Vocabulary • equivalent forms of one • equivalent ratios • ratio • ratio table Getting Started Review how to write fractions in simplest form. Distinguish numerator and denominator and relate fractions to ratios. Discuss multiples and how this relates to equivalent forms of one. Lesson Information Remind students that a ratio table displays pairs of numbers that have the same ratio. Math Challenge Complete the ratio table to solve the problem. Rosie can make 28 necklaces in 16 hours. At this rate, how long would it take her to make 7 necklaces? It would take her 4 hours to make 7 necklaces. Differentiated Instruction Kinesthetic Learners Have students work in pairs. Distribute dried beans or counters to each group. Write the following ratios on the board. Have students use the beans or counters to create a table for each ratio, labeling the relationship numerator and denominator. Tell students to find five equivalent ratios for each example. Have students practice explaining to their partners how to find the equivalent ratios, and then write the modeled ratio tables on a piece of paper. Ask pairs to share their ratio tables with other classmates. 2 51 3 3, 4,6, 7 Naturalistic Learners Tell students to work in small groups. Students should use their classroom and school environment to find ratios. Encourage them to consider smaller ratios such as the number of paintbrushes per can in the art room, as well as larger ratios such as the number of certain colored tiles on the floor of one classroom. Have groups brainstorm as many ratio examples as they can, and then write two problems with ratio tables. Tell students to include the completed tables and the answers to their problems. Encourage groups to share their problems with the class and invite their classmates to find the answers. Assess Step 1 Draw the following ratio table on the board. Step 2 Tell students to complete the ratio table to find the number of ounces of pineapple juice needed for 5 cups of punch. Then have them find the number of cups of punch that could be made with 16 ounces of pineapple juice. Step 3 Have students work in pairs. Ask them to discuss what the ratio table shows and explain how they found the equivalent ratios. Step 4 Have students work alone to write an evaluation of the ratio table on the board. Encourage students to use correct vocabulary terms and clear language in their explanations.
