Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture Year 5/6 Key Skills to be covered, taken from Lancashire Key Learning Document – pitching at the correct year group and differentiation within plan for different groups Be specific in the key skills, and make them more understandable for children. Consider what it is YOU feel the children should learn as well as the National Curriculum: Exploring and Developing Ideas: • We will select and record our ideas in our sketch book, together with notes and ideas about our work and any information we find out about specific artists Evaluating and Developing Work: • We will compare ideas, methods and approaches from amongst the class and with known artists and say what we think and feel about them, adapting them as needed 3D: • We will be able to shape, form, model and construct from our own ideas using recycled, manmade and natural materials • We will be able to plan a sculpture through drawing • We will be able to manipulate clay using techniques such as slabs, coils, slips etc • We will be able to produce intricate patterns using malleable media Possible Cross-curricular links, especially opportunities for English, Mathematics and Computing within teaching: English links • Mathematics links • Computing links • Write a description of your sculpture for a blind person. Discuss ideas with a partner, thinking about shape and materials the mask is made from. Make analogies and use metaphors and similes. Measuring and proportion of facial features, Produce multimedia presentations about making their sculptures. They could use digital photographs and video clips, and include information about professional mask makers and sculptors. Other links Possible Experiences including visits/visitors/other: Consider what could augment your planning to really enthuse the children in your class: • Use the Egyptians resource box to see examples of Egyptian art / sculpture Display/Resources ideas: Consider what resources could be brought into the classroom and what display work could be completed either before/during or after topic is taught: • Egyptian Art display on corridor outside the staff room / hall Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture Session 1 Key Objective from skills listed above (What is it that you want the children to learn?) WALT – select and record ideas for Egyptian art • 2 We will select and record our ideas in our sketch book, together with notes and ideas about our work and any information we find out about specific artists WALT – compare methods for creating hieroglyphics • We will compare ideas, methods and approaches from amongst the class and with known artists and say what we think and feel about them, adapting them as needed Possible Activities including use of Computing and other technologies, and showing at least 3 differentiations 5 min starter - In Art book, jot down thoughts and ideas for improvement in painting http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/egypt/ Ask the children to share the artistic knowledge they have learnt through the course of the year. Pupil to pupil interviews (ICT links – Recorded on Ipads). What do the children feel they know about painting and sculpture? What do they feel they are good at and which artistic skills would they like to improve? Show the children a range of examples of representations of painting, writing and sculpture ask them in groups to identify which may be ancient Egyptian (AFL – knowledge of wider art examples e.g. the statue of David. Mona Lisa) Once the art has been identified ask the children for their opinions on hieroglyphics and sculpture from the period. LA – Research as a group with TA/teacher leading discussion MA – chn perform a quick research on Ipads hieroglyphics and Egyptian sculptures to share with the class. Research in pairs. HA – chn perform a quick research on Ipads hieroglyphics and Egyptian sculptures to share with the class. Research independently Show the children some hieroglyphics How do they think they were produced? LET THE CHILDREN EXPLORE their theories with pencil, paint, chalk, pastels. LA – TA/teacher to question verbally about the success of their exploration MA – Chn Make notes on their explorations, stating what was successful and not HA –Make notes on their explorations, stating what was successful and not – also add why Once they feel they have succeeded and found the technique ask them how they could print and mass produce the technique so it was all the same (MAKING PRINTS/TEMPLATES). Outcomes/Evidence of what they have learnt (Where will this be found? Will it be in a book? Topic book? Display? Photographic evidence? Possible extension into homework if appropriate to enhance and deepen learning Children are able to share their feelings and ideas about Ancient Egyptian Art and sculpture. The can identify hieroglyphics and sculptures of famous Egyptians. Children can comment on the effectiveness of Egyptian Art and hieroglyphics. Children can create and print their own Egyptian hieroglyphics. Children can create a print they can use for their hieroglyphs. Chn design their own Egyptian hieroglyphic to stick in their Art book and use on their sculptures. Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture 3 4 See philosophy plan below What is sculpture? What can it be made off? Children can identify the importance of sculpture in the ancient Egyptian civilisation. WALT – plan an Egyptian sculpture Explain that we will be making sculptures from modelling clay /mod-roc. They are going to be based on the ancient examples we have looked at from Egypt. The children have to: Plan and label diagram (with equipment list) link to techniques explored last week. Start making their sculptures upon completion of plan (checked with T or TA in lesson. Children can begin to make their Egyptian sculptures from modelling clay. • 5 We will be able to plan a sculpture through drawing WALT – complete and evaluate sculptures • • We will be able to manipulate clay using techniques such as slabs, coils, slips etc We will be able to produce intricate patterns using malleable media LA – plan in pairs what their sculpture is going to look like, what size it is going to be and what detail they are going to add. MA – create a detailed plan of what their sculpture is going to look like, what size it is going to be and what detail they are going to add. HA –develop 2 ideas and select which one they prefer and why Children complete their sculptures from last week and begin to finish their pieces off to a high standard so they can be successfully displayed and evaluated. Children adapt plans and discuss the techniques and finishes used. Plenary Ask the children to show their work to each other and explain the things they have learnt personally and about Egyptian painting/printing and sculpture. Is there anything they would still like to know? Do you feel the topic was successful? How could it be improved/ changed in the future? Stage Details for facilitator 1. Getting set Intro 4cs- what should we work on? – Ask chn Children can follow and adapt their plans and describe the changes they have made. Children can complete and decorate their sculptures. • They can use a range of techniques to add a high quality finish to their work. Children can evaluate their work. • Design the rest of a carnival costume to accompany your face mask. Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture Play warm up game • Would you rather? (just imagine book is good for this) 2. Stimulus 3. Thinking time (private then public) Display above stimulus Individual reflection – let the chn look and think about the pictures Paired reflection – talk to one partner about the pictures 4. Question making Tell chn to write a ‘think it over’ question – What is the meaning of sculpture? Why do humans bother to make sculpture? What is the purpose of sculpture? Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture Show chn question words to help 5. Question airing Share all questions and group them Look at the no answer questions and discuss. Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture 6. Question choosing Vote with your feet- stand at the question you want 7. First thoughts Let the pair who wrote the question say why they have written it and what they think 8. Guided by facilitator children discuss question Building/discus DO NOT GIVE YOUR OPINION] sion Some questions that may help you to ask: How do you know that? Can you explain? Can you give an example of...? Why do you think that....? What are your reasons...? Is there another point of view..? Can you give me a counter example....? What would someone who disagreed with you say...? So are we saying...? e.g., …that sculptures are valuable? Does everyone agree...? Are we any closer to answering the question...? 9. Last thoughts When discussion is coming to a close (or time is up) Ask children to share their last thoughts - go round and let each speak 10. Review Look at the 4c’s what did we do well on? What do we need to improve? Review with: draw a picture e.g. a heart for emotional Year 56 A3 Art Medium term planner 3D Sculpture
