Message from Jean Edwards – Manager
Hi all
We have had lots of exciting things happening over the last few months
and many more events coming up.
We have also gone through some reviews and audits: On Tuesday 15 March we had a Spot Audit of our Kitchen and Food Safety
with the Gold Coast City Council, no non-compliance issues were found .
On Thursday 17 March Allsafe Quality Management conducted a Food
Safety Program and Kitchen Compliance Audit. There were no nonconformances found  and they stated that “staff are to be commended
for the care and attention given to the continual improvement of your food
safety procedures”.
On Monday 21 March the Kalwun Community Care Program had its Quality
Review with the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. We are pleased to
say that No Non-Compliances were found. We were audited against the 3
Common Care Standards which include 18 Expected Outcomes. We were
successful with all and received 18 out of 18 .
Myself and my team of staff are extremely happy and proud that we are
working successfully and professionally within our operations.
I am looking forward to the coming months and being able to provide
quality services to clients in the community and to the clients that come in
the centre. Please feel free to phone me at the office on 5522 9197 if you
have any queries or concerns.
Kind regards - Jean

Information, hints and health tips from our Nurse – Karen Grundy
Influenza
Commonly known as ‘the flu’, influenza is a highly contagious disease that can be
serious, debilitating and affect the whole body. The flu is caused by a particular group
of viruses and is spread by infected people coughing or sneezing as well as from
surfaces contaminated by respiratory secretions. Even laughing, talking and breathing
can disperse the flu virus. But it’s no laughing matter. Influenza can cause serious illness,
particularly in people with underlying medical conditions, older adults, pregnant
women and young children. Many people confuse the common cold with influenza;
however, colds are much less severe.
Studies have shown that influenza can survive for:
 an hour or more in the air in enclosed environments
 more than 8 hours on hard surfaces such as stainless steel and plastic
 up to 15 minutes if transferred from tissues to hands
 up to 5 minutes after transfer from the environmental surfaces
Flu fact: Adults can be contagious 1 day before getting symptoms and up to 5 days
after. This means that you can spread the influenza virus before you know you are
infected.
Preventing Flu
Hygiene
Good hygiene is essential to protect yourself and others in flu season.
 Use a tissue, or the inside of your arm, when you cough and sneeze.
 Dispose of tissues after use.
 Wash your hands immediately after coughing or sneezing
 Stay home if you have flu-like symptoms, so you don’t pass it on.
 Don’t share items like glasses, cups, cutlery, lipstick.
 Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces, such as door handles, taps, tables,
benches and fridge doors with regular household detergent.
Vaccination
The best way to protect yourself and your family is to be vaccinated. Being vaccinated
gives you protection against flu by building immunity to the virus and preventing
transmission of the virus to other people. Annual influenza vaccination reduces your
chances of catching the flu, and it may also reduce the severity of the flu if you do
catch it. Every year, the flu vaccine is changed as required to ensure it offers
protection from the most recent virus strains.
Kalwun offers Flu Vaccinations yearly to clients and staff,
please contact our nurse Karen for more information.
