PASTOR’S PEN
The last verse of today's Gospel reading says,
"I have come that people may have life and
that they may have it in all its fullness." This
statement is important because it reminds us of
something that we sometimes tend to forget;
namely, that God cares about the quality of our
lives here and now. All too often, we think of the
redemptive work of Christ mainly, if not entirely,
in terms of life after death. And none of us would
question the importance of that issue. What
happens beyond the grave matters supremely.
Jesus knew this and gave repeated assurance of
immortality to His followers. For this we can all be
grateful, but in our total absorption with this issue,
we sometimes forget that He was also concerned
with the question of life before death.
needs. So it is with us: we can never live life to its
fullest and best, apart from the Shepherd.
Abundant living is always deeply rooted in a real
relationship with God. Leave Him out, and we have
cut off life from its very source.
Then, of course, that divine-human relationship
necessarily involves other people. We cannot
walk with the Shepherd and abuse or ignore the
rest of the flock. Opening up your heart to God
and to people, giving love and accepting it in
return, this is what fullness of life is all about.
There is one other ingredient, and that is gratitude.
There can be no great living without it. If you are
resentful toward life because you feel cheated by
it, you will never live abundantly until you find
some way to get over that feeling. If you are
arrogant about life because you feel that you are a
self-made person, you will never live abundantly
until you recognize the truth that God has
given you your life, and scores of people have
contributed to it. All the great living of all the ages
has come from people who feel that they have
received more than they could ever deserve. If we
would live life at its fullest, we should spend at
least as much time counting our blessings and
being grateful for what we have, as we do working
and planning and wishing for more.
He told us this in connection with His parable of
the Good Shepherd, where we are pictured as His
sheep. Jesus told this story to point out His care
and concern, to tell us that like a good shepherd,
He provides for, protects, and even lays down His
life for His sheep. His purpose in doing this is that
we might experience life in all its fullness.
To understand that purpose, we must look
beyond the analogy of sheep. Whatever fullness
of life means, it must have something to do with
the way Jesus lived. It was the Good Shepherd
Himself, who experienced life in all its fullness;
and He would have us do the same. The only way
we can do that is to live as He lived, which of
course, is something we can never completely
accomplish, but the closer we come, the fuller
life will be.
What does fullness of life really mean? The first
thing I see is relationships. This is what Jesus is
emphasizing in His parable, the relationship
between the shepherd and His sheep. He knows
and calls each of them by name. They know and
recognize His voice and trust Him and follow
Him. For the sheep, there can be no fullness of life
apart from the shepherd. He is both their safety
and the source of supply to meet their daily

anthropology. "The ultimate
purpose of devotion to the Blessed Virgin is to
glorify God and lead Christians to commit
themselves to a life which confirms absolutely to
His will." In this document Pope Paul VI also
encourages two popular devotions: the praying of
the Angelus and the rosary.
Traditionally, the Church honors Mary, the Mother
of God, and our Mother, during the Month of May.
The devotion to Mary is one of the most obvious
features of Catholicism and originated in early
Christianity. It was closely associated with the
mystery of her son, Jesus Christ, and did not
have the multiplicity of forms so evident in
modern times.
Little children built May altars. They crowned a
statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary sometime in
May. Women, men, and children carried rosaries
and many prayed the rosary daily with meditation
on mysteries that were thoroughly familiar.
An altar dedicated to Mary was an obvious fixture
in every church. When the congregation sang
in the vernacular, chances were that the song
told of the praises of Mary. Public prayer
services
featured communal recitation of the
rosary and litanies. Devotees obeyed and
promoted the messages of the Lady in blue.
Legion of Mary members became important lay
ministers in parishes.
Today, devotion to Mary continues to be
reassessed in light of Scripture, pastoral concerns,
and ecumenism. Honoring Mary should occur
within the bounds of a rightly ordered faith and
thus not overshadow the one triune God: Father,
Son, and Spirit. It should keep clearly in view that
Christ alone is the merciful Savior and one
Mediator between God and human beings. Let
us remember to pray to her, asking her to
intercede for us to the Father in heaven.
It took centuries for the early church to clarify its
faith in Jesus and his human and divine natures. As
the church began to appreciate the depth of
mystery surrounding their Lord, it also identified
its relationship to Mary. The church discovered her
as Mother of God, model of what the church is
called to be, and the most powerful intercessor
with God.
Hail Mary
Mary is given a veneration above that of all other
saints. This is because of her unique relationship to
Jesus, to the God from whom He comes, and to
the church which continues His presence. This
veneration is expressed in official dogmas, feast
days, and in multiple forms of private devotions on
the part of Catholics. Her role as a woman in
relation to the mystery of church and salvation is a
great importance today.
Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners, now
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
On February 2, 1974, Pope Paul VI issued his
"Guidelines for Devotion to the Blessed Virgin." He
emphasized that devotions to Mary should be

MARY, THE FIRST EVANGELIZER
Mary, the Mother of Our Lord, was the
first Christian evangelizer. She was
the first one to voluntarily accept
Christ into her life, to allow Christ to live
in her and then to bring Christ forth
and share Him with the whole world.
THE 3 M’S – MAY – MARY – MOTHER
In the 1940’s and 50’s, the first Sunday in
May was reserved to honor Our Blessed Mother
in a special way. For example, in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
each parish had a procession consisting of the
parish priests, altar boys, school children and
men and women carrying the statue of Our
Blessed Mother throughout the neighborhood.
Hundreds and hundreds of people came out to
honor the Mother of God. On many streets, you
could see people in wheel chairs, on crutches,
and some on stretchers waiting to catch a
glimpse of the statue of the Blessed Mother.
When Her statue approached the infirm, the
procession would stop and the priest would
bless the invalids and give them a blessed pair
of rosaries.

Invite you events that will take place each 13th
of the month from May to October 2017.
We will make memory of each of Mary’s
apparitions so that we may respond with love
to each of Her Maternal calls.
Starting May 13
St. Michael the Archangel Parish
Candlelight procession at 9 p.m.
These processions were truly a demonstration of
our faith. The faithful loved Mary and cherished
how special and important She was in the eyes
of God. After all, God created Her without sin,
and She remained sinless Her entire life. She was
God’s mother…His masterpiece.
Message from Father Martin Kelly …
I frequently meet past students of our school
in Puerto Quito who are proud to tell me how
they are doing in life…doctors, nurses, lawyers,
social workers. They thank me for having given
them the opportunity to pursue their studies in
the school so they can now contribute to the
community as professional people enjoying a
better standard of living for their families.
But the most important role Mary played was
being a mother. She gave birth to Jesus under
difficult circumstances, She cared for Him during
His infancy, and She watched Him grow up. As a
mother, She fed, clothed and cared for His every
need. She took long walks with Her son and
played with Him. She loved Him dearly. But what
broke Her heart was seeing Her son die on the
cross. Tears ran down Her face, and when Jesus
was placed in Her arms, She held Him tightly and
whispered words of love in His ears.
I tell them, don’t thank me. Thank God who has
blessed you and thank the people of Epiphany
Parish in Miami who have contributed so
generously to make our school a reality.
In the name of these young people in Puerto
Quito who have benefitted from your most
generous contributions year after year, I thank
each and every member of Epiphany Parish.
Your generosity to Puerto Quito is deeply
appreciated.
The month of May is Mary’s month. Mary, the
Mother of God, has many titles…Mother of
Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Charity, Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel, and countless others. But the title
She loves the most is “Mother.” Why? Because
Mary is also your mother. She will always love
and comfort you. So go to Her, not only when
you need help, but just to chat as Her child.
God bless you,
Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen
Cantón Puerto Quito
Nor.Occ. Pichincha, Ecuador
So next time you stop before the statue, please
remember She loves you because She is also
your “Mother.” Remember the 3 M’s.

THE
EPIPHANY
A quick look at the structure of the Rosary shows
it to be truly a Scripture-based prayer drawing
especially upon the Gospels. The Apostles’ Creed
itself, leading off the Rosary, is nothing other than
a summary of the great mysteries of the Catholic
Faith, most of which are standard Gospel
teachings. Each decade is preceded by the Our
Father, a prayer straight from the Gospels and
taught by Jesus Himself as a model of all prayer.
1. Make the sign of the Cross and
pray the Apostles' Creed.
2. Pray the Our Father.
3. Pray three Hail Mary’s.
4. Pray Glory Be to the Father.
5. Announce the mystery for
reflection and pray the Our Father.
6. Pray the ten Hail Mary’s.
7. Finish the decade with the Glory Be
to the Father.
8. Repeat steps (5, 6, 7) for each decade.
The first part of the Hail Mary is composed of
verses from the Gospel of Luke (1:28 and 1:42) the
angel’s words announcing Christ’s birth and
Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary. Both of these Gospel
passages are rich in meaning and point to the
central mystery of our faith, the Incarnation of the
Messiah.
Mary’s key role in the mystery of Christ is not a
Rosary invention. Rather, it is a vital part of the
Gospel that is simply reflected in the Rosary. The
sense of the faithful that the Rosary is a prayer of
confidence in Mary’s love and intercession for us
is rooted in the Good News of the Gospel.
Joyful Mysteries (Mondays and Saturdays)
1.
2.
3.
4.
Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus to Mary.
Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.
Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Presentation of the Infant Jesus in the
Temple.
5. Finding the Child Jesus in the Temple.
The Gospel passages from which the Hail Mary
was drawn, moreover, reveal the Virgin as a
dynamic, grace-filled woman to whom God
offered a pivotal and active role in the drama of
salvation.
Luminous Mysteries (Thursdays)
1. Baptism of Jesus.
2. Wedding at Cana.
3. Proclaiming the Kingdom.
4. Transfiguration.
5. Institution of the Eucharist.
If the Rosary is truly to reflect the spirit of the
Gospel and that of the Virgin Mary as portrayed
there, then it must encourage, among other
things, dynamic responsibility on the part of both
women and men as well as a commitment to
walking with God’s poor. The Rosary is meant to
be a prayer that leads us to Christ and into union
with God.
Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesdays & Fridays)
1. Agony of Christ in the Garden.
2. Scourging of Jesus at the Pillar.
3. Placing of the crown of thorns on the
head of Jesus.
4. Carrying the Cross by Jesus.
5. Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The words of the Rosary are meant to launch us
into the mysteries of Christ’s life or, better, into
the living mystery of Christ Himself, who says, “I
am with you always even until the end of time.”
Just as each Hail Mary builds up to the word,
Jesus, so the whole Rosary leads to union with
Him. And through Jesus we come into union with
the Triune God. Each decade ends in a “Glory be
to Father, Son and Spirit,” suggesting that the
whole Rosary is a movement toward praise and
joyful union with God.
