Looking Back... Shawnee Town Events Christmas Around Town created holiday cheer for the community Shawnee Town co-hosted it’s annual Shawnee Christmas Around Town event on Saturday, December 3rd, along with the City of Shawnee. We had approximately 1100 people in attendance! The weather was remarkable, so the crowds came in full force! Families enjoyed visiting with Santa & Mrs. Claus, taking pictures with the live reindeer and taking horse drawn carriage rides. What a great way to wrap up our 2017 season, seeing so many smiling faces. We hope you all enjoyed your holidays with family and friends! We are looking forward to seeing you all in 2017! Paying it forward We want to remind you that your annual membership to the Friends of Shawnee Town does so much! Your membership dollars help the museum to furnish and upkeep the artifacts in the collection. They also help students have the opportunity to visit Shawnee Town 1929 and learn about the history of Shawnee, Kansas in 1929. Each year we offer a bus subsidy to every school that visits the museum for a field trip. In 2016, your membership fees helped us reach over 2,000 students throughout the season. In all, the Friends of Shawnee Town funded $3,375.00 in bus subsidies to several districts. We could not do this without your support. If you have let your membership lapse and you’d like to reinstate it, please just give us a call at 913-248-2360, we can renew by phone, mail or in person! Your support is appreciated by so many teachers, students and parents throughout the community! 11501 West 57th Street Shawnee, Kansas 66203 February 4th...Valentine Dance featuring Grand Marquis & 627 Stomp, 7pm 11th...Gettin’ Through the Cold: An Intergenerational Sharing & Celebration, 10am 18th...1920s Book Club, 10am UPDATE March 6th...New Volunteer Open House, 6pm 18th...1920s Book Club at the Farmhouse, 10am 29th...Speakeasy Society Program: The Art Deco Movement, 7pm Winter, 2017 April 5th...Design a 1920s Hat-Class, 6:30pm 15th...1920s Book Club at the Farmhouse, 10am 22nd...Sharing Patterns, Sharing Lives: Quilt Workshop, 10am 26th...Postcards of Kansas City 1835-1935, 7pm Shawnee Town 1929 Valentine’s Dance We would LOVE for you to join us for our Val- entine’s Dance on Saturday, February 4th, featuring the music of Grand Marquis and performances by 627 Stomp! Come Celebrate Family & Friendship The 1920s and 1930s were a period when times were tough and people learned to make a way when there just didn’t seem to be any way of moving forward. The same thing could be said of the 1980s and more recent times. This year, let’s share how our families celebrated the good times and made it through the bad. Each of us has a story to tell. Share yours or sit back and listen to others! This class will be held four times in 2017 with different content and activities each time. We’ll be celebrating the seasons in 1920s Shawnee and now. Each class focuses on one season. Each will include time for hearing and sharing seasonal stories, sampling or making a seasonal dish (recipe included), and participating in a hands-on activity to take home. Whether or not your mother or grandmother passed down tales about life in their times, come, share, and listen. You are welcome to bring your children, parents, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends. The fee for each participant is $5 regardless of age. Each class is on a Saturday from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. Dates: February 11 (winter focus), May 6 (Spring), August 5 (Summer), and November 4 (Fall). See our website or Facebook page for fuller descriptions! P AGE 3 Calling all Ladies with Long Locks or Shorn! Save the date & save those locks! If your hair is short, what a perfect reason for growing it long! All hair donations will go to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a charity campaign created by Pantene in partnership with HairUWear® and the American Cancer Society® that encourages people to grow, cut, and donate their healthy hair to create real-hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Local hair stylists will be on hand to do the cutting in our 1920s-outfitted Bousman Barber Shop. So be the “bee’s knees” and save (or grow) those locks for beautiful lengths. We’ll have 1920s-inspired refreshments on hand to celebrate good times and your donation! If you’d like more information on this event, please call us at, (913) 248-2360. Speakeasy Society Program The Art Deco Movement In 2015 we introduced our Speakeasy Society program. We had so much fun listening to so many engaging speakers over the last two years. We’ve learned about prohibition, fashion, popular culture, between the wars, and so much more. There is still so much to learn, so we are continuing our Speakeasy Society programs in 2017. Our first Speakeasy Society Program is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29th, at 7:00pm in the Town Hall, located at 11600 Johnson Drive Shawnee, KS 66203. The 1920s was witness to one of the most admired art movements in modern history - Art Deco - which still influences design today. Learn about art deco and its influence on Kansas City’s built environment while sipping a Prohibition cocktail and sampling light 1920s styled hors d’oeuvres. You’re welcome to come in your best 1920s glad rags! If you’d like to join us, you’ll need to get the password! Call us at (913) 248-2360 to receive the secret password and make your reservations. This past year, the museum offered the most mission-based programs ever attempted, and this year will be even more ambitious. But folks, it’s not just about quantity—it’s about quality! Our staff has been busy researching 1920’s leisure time activities, educational programs, and other special and interesting programs to bring our public this year. Please check times and details on these winter events by picking up our 2017 Calendar of Events, or find it online at www.shawneetown.org. This winter is also seeing a lot of physical changes to the museum grounds, in the form of a major landscaping and an underground water pipe project. Where the creek used to be will be the new home to two 18 inch storm water pipes layed side by side and covered over with soil. After this is sodded, the road and sidewalk will be straightened and landscaped so in the event of severe rain--water will properly flow into the creek instead of Town Hall, garden plots, and the road. We are also in the midst of raising money for the west block of reconstructed buildings including the Shawnee State Bank, drug store, dry goods store, and electric store. So far, we have had some success, and the campaign will continue until the necessary funds are raised to accurately reconstruct these four key buildings from Shawnee’s past. I’m always happy to talk to individuals or groups about our future plans and what we have in store—for both the buildings and the programs that make them and our shared past come to life. There is never a dull moment here at the museum, past or present! Happy winter!
