The race is held in the Tennessee River and attracts an average of 180 swimmers per year. In 2017, Chattanooga will host the 3-day USMS Open Water Festival. Two of the races at the festival will be Open Water Championships. Stan Corcoran will be the race director of one of these races. The City of Chattanooga has hosted three Ironman and two ½ Ironman championships in the past 3 years. These races have 2,500 competitors in them. The Chattanooga Sports Commission has been an integral part of these races. They will be involved in all aspects of the Zone Championships from hotels, food services, transportation and coordination of City resourses for this race. Referee: Larry Alexander. Larry has been a USA Swimming referee for the past 25 years. He has been the head referee for numerous events, including the Chattanooga Rat Race, a USMS open water swim, for the past three years. Briefly describe emergency response plan for: Inclement weather: A portion of the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club is located on a part of the race course on the Tennessee River. The Club has a state-of-the-art weather tracking system. The organization will utilize this weather system to track the weather and determine the start of the race and any delays/cancelations that may be necessary. Missing swimmer: Before the race, every swimmer will be numbered. They will be checked off a master list when they enter and exit the water. We will have a video camera set up at the finish to video for placing and swimmer recognition. If a swimmer gets out in the middle of the race, they will be taken to the finish line and officially checked in. We will have at least 20 kayaks, probably more, on the course. The swimmers will be within 50 yards of shore at all times and kayaks will be on the outside of the swimmers to ensure no swimmer gets off course or is in trouble. The swimmers will be between the kayakers and the shoreline. We will have 3 motor boats and 2 jet skis escorting the swimmers during the race. 11. Attach course layout, indicating start, finish, turns, and safety boats (including kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, etc.) Course layouts are at the end of this document. We can accommodate for 1K, 3K and 5K races with both layouts. We would prefer to do the loop course, due to better spectator and team viewing during the race. The kayakers will start with the lead swimmers and keep swimmers in sight as the race progresses. We will have kayaks about 40 yards apart as they follow the swimmers. 12. Plan for timing system: Scenic City Multisport will handle all timing needs. They have provided timing for numerous open water races over the past 3 years, as well as triathlons and marathons. 13.
