1.1 THE CITY OF CUENCA!
! Cuenca, in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, is the cradle of the Castilian language, home of the famous Don
Quijote, and it is situated in a privileged position mid way between Madrid (50 minutes by train) and
Valencia (1 hour by train).!
! In 1996, it was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, for its richness in art, culture and the
impressive natural and ecological enclave of the Serranía de Cuenca, or highlands of Cuenca (also awarded
the denomination of Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2007).!
! Above all it is the people of Cuenca (60,000 inhabitants) who make this city the warm, welcoming and safe
place it is to study and live in. It is an authentic Spanish experience.!

The True Spanish Experience is an innovative programme promoted by all the local
official institutions such as the City Council, Local Government, Department of Education, etc.
are involved.!

! The National University UNED (the largest in Spain): All of our programs include official
certificates from National University UNED. !
! Institutes and Secondary Education Centres: Our academic programmes aim to welcome foreign
students into our secondary education centres to share activities with local students.!
! Cervantes Institute: We are an official examination centre for Cervantes. !
! Red Cross: Our Foreign students can learn all about the important work of the Red Cross in
Cuenca and take part in the humanitarian work and various programmes it carries out while
practising and bettering their Spanish skills.!
! Companies from Cuenca: Our company work experience programmes consist of combining an
intensive Spanish language course with in-company practicals in the city of Cuenca. !

“Experience Card”!

This card is given to each student on the first day and
serves as your “Cuenca Citizen” card throughout the
duration of your stay. This means that students from any
of the programmes of True Spanish Experience will be
truly immersed and be a part of our city exactly as if
they had been born here.!
!
You will be able to use the city’s facilities just as if you
were from Cuenca (go to the museums, libraries,
swimming pools, theatres, sports centres, use public
transportation etc.) as well as discounts in bars,
restaurants and shops, beauty salons and spa, theatre
shows, etc.!

The True Spanish Experience is much more than just a Spanish course. Our programmes are based on Content and
Language Integrated Learning (C.L.I.L.) where the “Experiencias TSE” are the key to language acquisition. They
have attractive contents that will enrich learning for foreign students while Spanish is used for what it really is, a
tool for communication.!
These contents have been developed for their intrinsic values, representing as they do, the essence of our city.!
Students will not only enjoy learning through their interests according to these content areas, but they will live
these enjoyable activities with local people from Cuenca who also participate and share the EXPERIENCE. !

Families are fully accredited by the Cuenca Municipal Authority and criminal history
checks (CRB/ DBS equivalent) can be provided. If it is required according to the the
school rules, accommodation of two student may stay in the same location. !

Cuenca offers a wide range of hotels, hostels and inns, providing students with the
choice to stay in different areas of the city, such as the city’s old quarters,
downtown, or even in the same district as the TSE headquarters!

Shared apartments with other students (students over 18). This accommodation
offers all of the necessary comfort and facilities (accommodation only)!
