M O S A I C O C U LT U R A L E Volume XXXI, Numero 3 Maggio e Giugno 2015 Buona Festa Della Mama e Festa del Papá POST MOTHER’S DAY MAY 18, 2015 FATHER’S DAY JUNE 15, 2015 Mother’s Day, Giorno Della Madre, emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day. In its present form, Mother’s Day was established by Anna Marie Jarvis in 1905. On May 8, 1914, the US Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. “Any man can be a Father, but it takes a special person to be called Dad”. This was the central thought behind Sonora Smart Dodd’s idea when she created a special day to honor fathers worldwide. After her mother passed away, in 1909, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father who made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless and loving man. Since his birthday was in June, she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1972 President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. To briefly describe all the wonderful aspects of the regions of Italy is an impossible task. Each region holds unique geography and culture so it is difficult to present it in limited time and space. With the help of the Intervallo Committee’s oral presentations we hope that you are enjoying the regional dinners and informational talks and articles. In May we honor not only our mothers but also the region of Umbria. Umbria is the only region in Italy that has neither a coastline or border with another country. Umbria is Italy’s ‘green heart’ of valleys and untouched landscapes. It is crossed by the Tiber River, its capital is Perugia and some of the historic towns are Assisi (home of St. Francis), Norcia (home of St. Benedict) and Orvieto with it’s magnificient cathedral. The originial people were the Umbri, chief enemies of the Etruscans. Perugia once was a part of the Etruscan empire while Norcia was in Sabine territory. Roman Umbria extended to Ravenna. Agriculturally, Umbria is known for wines such as the white Orvieto and the Rosso di Montefalco. The dinner in May will be antipasti, chicken cacciatore, mashed potatoes, Italian beans, Caesar salad and dessert. Members are asked to bring a a photo of their mother or grandmother with their name, to be displayed and honored. Everyone who brings a photos will receive one free raffle ticket. In addition there will be entertainment by Carlo Solivan. In June we recognize the region of Le Marche located in the central area of Italy, bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the northwest, and Umbria to the west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Prior to he 1980’s, Le Marche was considered a rather poor region. Today small craft workshops have modernized and become small businesses, some with major brands in footwear, leather goods, furniture and textiles. The main agricultural products of Le Marche are cereals, vegetables, animal products and grapes. One of the best places to find anisetta is in Ascoli-Piceno, Le Marche. Our dinner for June, honoring fathers will be antipasti, grilled meats, pasta with herbs and sundried tomatoes, salad and dessert. Members are asked to bring a photo of their father or grandfather with a surname attached which will be displayed. All who bring a photo will receive one free raffle ticket. “I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.” -Umberto Eco, Foucault’s Pendulum St. Rose Parish Hall Dining Room 398 - 10th Street, Santa Rosa Doors open at 5:00pm dinner served at 6:00pm Prepaid Reservations only for May 18, 2015 _____places @ $14.00 for members _____places @ $16.00 for guests _____places @ $ 8.00 for teens 13 to 18 _____places @ $ 5.00 for child 5 to 12 years _____places for under 5 years, free St. Rose Parish Hall Dining Room 398 - 10th Street, Santa Rosa Doors open at 5:00pm dinner served at 6:00pm Prepaid Reservations only for June 15, 2015 _____places @ $14.00 for members _____places @ $16.00 for guests _____places @ $ 8.00 for teens 13 to 18 _____places @ $ 5.00 for child 5 to 12 _____places for under 5 years, free Name________________________________________ Name________________________________________ Mail in by May 13, 2015 Mail in by June 10, 2015 NBICF MEMBERSHIP Benvenuti ~ Welcome to new Members Individuals: Butch Bondi, Valerie Foster, Cheryl Louise, Sondra Persons, Mary Tomasi Dubois, Katherine Winkelman, Debbie Wymer, Art Valencia The NBICF Board of Directors invites you to our next dinner meeting and future events. Sitting here writing my article I realize it is already April. In January we hosted a crab feed fundraiser and at the monthly dinner an installation ceremony for new and returning Board of Directors. The February dinner celebrated Carnevale and it seemed everyone had a lot of fun dancing to Zighi Baci. At the March dinner the Foundation celebrated the Tavola di San Giuseppe. I would like to thank Susan Terracina Adler, Janet Barocco and Veronica Johnson for creating such a beautiful altar. I would also like to thank members who brought in food that was donated to FISH (Friends in Sonoma Helping). According to Janet over 200 pounds of food was donated. Also the loaves of bread from the altar were donated to the Mission Kitchen in Railroad Square, and half the raffle funds collected were donated to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) who serve abused and neglected children in Sonoma County who come before the Juvenile Court for protection. This is in keeping with the traditions of San Giuseppe by giving back to those in need. I am proud that the Foundaton continues this tradition as part of our Italian culture and heritage. At the March meeting I announced that Angelo Catelani had decided to resign as Coro Allegro Director for personal and health reasons. Angelo had successfully led Coro as the Director for over 15 years. Through his leadeship Coro brought the joy of folk and popular Italian music to the North Bay. With regret the NBICF board of directors accepted Angelo’s resignation. Angelo recommended that Les Villanyi take his place. The NBICF board has approved Les as new director of Coro Allegro. I know with our new director, that Coro will be in good hands. I am pleased to announce the Santa Rosa Junior College 2015-2016 scholarship recipients: The $400 Jeanette Mancini Mitchell Scholarship for Future Teachers was awarded to Tara Fabor, Santa Rosa. The Marianne Pedroncelli Italian Studies Scholarship for $400 was awarded to Connice Duncan of Santa Rosa. The $250 NBICF Scholarships for Spring 2015 for Italian language studies awarded to: Rebecca E. Arent-Draper of Windsor, Carlos D. Aviles of Windsor, Cierra L. Beltaran of Santa Rosa, Will S. Spreter of Petaluma and Ricardo Ugo Stevenson of Santa Rosa. NBICF congratulates these students and we wish them the best of luck with their studies. The North Bay Italian Cultural Foundation will once again offer Italian Summer Camp For Youth 2015. This is a 2-week language camp offered for the weeks of June 8 and June 15, 2015.
