Physical and Chemical Changes Lab Stations

LAB - PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES
NAME:___________________
Physical and Chemical Changes Lab Stations
Purpose: To observe physical and chemical changes at ten different stations.
For each station, follow the procedure and record your observations in the data table below.
*** FOLLOW THE WASTE HANDLING PROCEDURES AS WRITTEN AT EACH STATION.
DO NOT THROW MATERIAL DOWN SINK OR IN GARBAGE UNLESS SPECIFICALLY DIRECTED!!!! ****
Hypothesis:
How can you tell when a physical change has taken place?
How can you tell when a chemical change has taken place?

Read all instructions
Follow the cleanup instructions at each station. Clean up after yourself at each
station!
Do station #2 before station #3, and take the test tube from #2 to use in #3.
Do station #6 before station #7, and take the dish from #6 to use in #7.
All other stations can be done in any order
Budget your time wisely.
You may want to use your camera to record a video or photograph some of the
reactions

Observations – Data Table (10 marks)
Record your observations before and after the change.
Note: Do station 2 before station 3; do station 6 before station 7
Station
Instructions
1
Light a match. Place
burned out match in
container provided.
2
Place copper(II) sulfate
crystals in 3/4 test tube
of water. Take test
tube to next station.
Observation of Original
Materials
Observations after Change
DO NOT DO STATION #3 UNTIL YOU DO STATION #2
3
Place iron filings in test
tube from station #2
4
Observe the ice cube in
the Petri dish
5
Add 5 mL of acetic acid
to milk. Discard in
waste beaker.

Observation of Original
Materials
Observations after Change
Place a few crystals of
cobalt(II) chloride in an
evaporating dish. Place
evaporating dish on hot
plate and observe for 30s.
Using tongs, pick up
evaporating dish and carry
to station #9
DO NOT DO STATION #7 UNTIL YOU DO STATION #6
7
Add a few drops of water to
the substance from station
#6. Stir with stirring rod. If
you do not notice a change,
add a few more drops of
water.
8
Use the tongs to hold a
piece of magnesium ribbon
in the flame of the alcohol
burner. Hold over the
Bunsen burner and do not
look directly at the flame.
9
Add a drop of iodine to the
piece of bread in the Petri

beaker.
10
Take 1 spatulas of calcium
carbonate and put it into
the evaporating dish and
add 2-3 drops of
hydrochloric acid

Conclusion: Classify what you observed at each station you observed as a physical change or a chemical
change and justify your answer.
