Unit Objectives: !
3rd-4th Grade!

1. TSWBAT demonstrate the proper way to turn and jump into a long jump rope.!
2. TSWBAT cooperate in a group of two in order to work on different types of
partner tricks.!
3. TSWBAT demonstrate several different skills of individual jump roping using the
proper technique (small jumps, quiet jumps, arms out) !
4. TSWBAT turn the long rope the proper way while cooperating with the other
group members. !
5. TSWBAT jump into a jump rope that is already moving without getting hit by the
rope. !
6. TSWBAT identify the physical and social benefits of exercise. !
7. TSWBAT explain the importance of practicing in order to enhance jump rope
skill performance. !

5th-6th Grade!
1. TSWBAT turn the long rope the proper way while cooperating with the other group
members. !
2. TSWBAT cooperate with a partner and execute different partner stunts (chain, wheel,
one rope, exc.)!
3. TSWBAT jump into a jump rope that is already moving without getting hit by the rope. !
4. TSWBAT identify and explain the physical and social benefits of exercise. !
5. TSWBAT explain the importance of practicing in order to enhance jump rope skill
performance. !
6. TSWBAT recognize the different changes that go through a persons body when they
are jump roping (shortness of breath, increased heart rate)!

Day 1 August 27-31!

Interest survey!
1. Benefits of Exercise---Students will discuss the benefits of exercising. !
1. Physical ---weight management, muscle strength, muscle endurance,
lower blood pressure, control of body movements, flexibility!
2. Social ---positive interaction with others, respect for self and others,
enjoyment, self-expression. !
2. Individual Jump Rope Tricks ---Students will practice a variety of jump rope skills.
Teacher will showcase several of the tricks and then the students will also have some
individual time to explore what other tricks they could do. Tricks are listed below.!
1. Bell, Skier, Jog, Rocker, Side Straddle, Side Swing, Kriss Kross, One
foot, exc. !
Students showcase what they have learned at the end of class. Be sure to discuss
how to treat others when in an audience.!

Day 2 --September 4-7!
1. Jump rope for heart video!
2. Review Benefits of Exercise ---Posters will be created that will have the physical
and social benefits of exercise. They will have to race to the middle of the gym and
put them in the proper category. !
3. Review Individual Skills ---Students will review their individual skills that they
learned during the last class period. !
4. Partner Jump Rope Tricks ---Students will learn a variety of ways to jump with a
partner. Tricks are listed below. !
1. One rope, Chain, Wheel, exc. !

Day 3--September 10-14!
1. Review Benefits of Exercise—Class activity posters!
2. Long Rope Skills ---Students will practice long jump rope tricks. They will be put
into groups of no more than 4. The students be instructed on how to turn the rope
as well as jumping. !
1. Turning---Big arm circles, steady beat, over their head, under their
feet,!
2. Skills ---In the middle, running in (front door/ Back door), Play ground
balls, tricks, exc. !

3. School ---Students will conclude the day playing a game called school. They will
have to run and jump into the rope while it is swinging. The goal is to try to make it
to college. Each jump they get equals grade level. (ex. 1 = 1st grade) !
4. Essential Questions: What is the key to being able to participate in long jump
roping? What are the cues that the turner needs to follow? When does a jumper
go into a swinging rope? What does it depend on? !
Day 4--September 17-21!
1. “Ice Cream and Cake Dance” (See attached copy for dance) !

2. Review Benefits of Exercise Active Board!
3. Culminating jump rope activities ---Different stations will be set up around the
gym. The student will practice all of the skills that they have learned so far
throughout the jump roping unit. Stations are as follows: !
1. #1 Single Skills!
2. #2 Partner Skills!
3. #3 Long Rope!
4. #4 Double Dutch!
5. #5 Moon hops / Skip hops!

5th - 6th Grade!
Day 1 August 27-31!
1. Cotton Eyed Joe---Students will learn a dance that involves a lot of jumping and
hopping. It will help get their bodies loosened up for jumping. (See attached
copy of the dance) !

into groups of no more than 4. The students be instructed on how to turn the rope
as well as jumping. !

1. Octopus ---Students will play a tag game that will have one person in the middle who is
the tagger. Students must make it to the other side of the gym without getting tagged.
If they stop jumping then they will now become a tentacle to the octopus. !
2. Double Dutch Turning practice ---Students will practice turning the double dutch ropes.
They will be in groups of three and will take turns practicing. Cues for this are below: !
3. Elbows in, small circles, alternating arms!
4. Culminating jump rope activities ---Different stations will be set up around the gym.
