Over $30,000 Raised to Benefit Free Clinic of Culpeper Patients September 2014 welcomed the return of the Free Clinic’s 4th Annual Oyster Fest. Recently named one of the top ten entertainment events in Culpeper for 2014, this year’s event at Collis Jenkins’ picturesque 275-acre Rock Hill Farm was sold-out with over 350 people in attendance. “It’s an honor to have the Oyster Fest here,” said Collis Jenkins, Free Clinic of Culpeper Board member. “This is for a great cause and I’m happy (con’t. on page 5) PAGE 2 PAGE 5 March 2015 Free Clinic Volunteer Spotlight Chairman’s Corner 2014 Oyster Fest — con’t. from page 1 The Free Clinic would like to introduce you to Joanne Durr, one of our fabulous and most faithful volunteers. Natives of New Jersey, Joanne and her husband, David, moved to Culpeper from Gettysburg in 2007. Many of you may know Joanne from her volunteer work with the Culpeper ‘92 Lions and Golf for Second Base tournament, an event near and dear to Joanne’s heart as she is a breast cancer survivor. Three years ago Joanne walked through the Clinic door and is now sharing four to five hours of her valuable time with us every week on Mondays and Wednesdays. “The staff, nurses and doctors passionately care for their patients here and work hard for their well being,” said Joanne. The Free Clinic can say the same for Joanne. Last week, she made sure a patient safely arrived home after his appointment. “It just seemed to be the right thing to do,” she explained. “I can’t help but care! When you have come to love the community like I have, you want to help those in need.” Thank you, Joanne Durr, for your steadfast support of the Free Clinic, your kindness to our patients, and for always asking, “Is there anything else I can do before I go?”. You are appreciated! As I prepare to step down in April as chairman of the Free Clinic Board of Directors, I want to express what a wonderful experience it has been to work with such supportive and Nancy Cannon dedicated board members and with Norma Dunwody and her great staff at the Free Clinic. We are blessed to have these caring individuals helping those in our community that are in need of medical attention that have no health insurance and/or underserved by other means. This past year we provided over $1.8 million in services and prescriptions. We were very honored to receive the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Award for "Non-Profit of the Year," as we are very proud of the successes we have reached with our patients. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to EVERY volunteer for sharing their time and talent with the clinic and our patients. In 2014, our volunteers logged in over 2200 hours.. The clinic absolutely could not function without their dedicated service. I want to thank the community for allowing me to be a part of this great organization. I leave this position in the good hands of Charles Perryman, Jr. who has provided many years of leadership and support to the Free Clinic. to host it at my farm. I want to keep having it here because we can keep growing the event.” Guests dined on all-you-can-eat oysters prepared in numerous ways by Country Café Catering, as well as delicious pork barbecue and various side dishes. Eighty degree temperatures, scrumptious food, live music by the Stillhouse Band, and a silent auction of many tempting items all contributed to the Oyster Fest’s tremendous success. Please mark your calendars for Sept. 26, 2015. The Free Clinic plans another repeat performance! Please Join Joanne! Volunteers Always Needed The Free Clinic is in search of daytime volunteers for Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hour shifts. Physicians, NPs, and nurses (RNs and LPNs) are especially needed for day clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you have an hour or two to share, we would be most grateful. If you have an interest in volunteering at the Free Clinic, please call Annette Aluzas, admin. assistant, at (540) 829-5032, or email her at [email protected]. Free Clinic Named Non-Profit of the Year by Local Chamber Norma Dunwody, Executive Director, proudly accepts the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Non-Profit of the Year Award on behalf of the Free Clinic. “To be selected as Non-Profit of the Year is an amazing honor and the Free Clinic is truly humbled by the recognition,” acknowledged Dunwody. “There are so many people that have worked tirelessly to establish a medical clinic where uninsured citizens of Culpeper are confident that they receive the best primary health care possible. They deserve the credit for this award!” Thank you to the following 2014 Oyster Fest sponsors and donors for their generous support: Oyster Rockefeller Event Sponsor Cedar Mountain Stone Culpeper Regional Health System S.W.I.F.T.
