Dear Friends in Christ,
What a timely moment for the publishing of the annual report for the Catholic Foundation
for Eastern South Dakota - just after Thanksgiving and as we begin the season of Advent.
We thank God for past blessings and we look forward with hope.
As you will read in this report, being thankful is timely as we recognize the long list of donors
who have shared of their time, talent and treasure. But it is timely too because it is our faith
in Jesus Christ and the call to continue his mission and ministry that motivates and animates
all that we do.
We acclaim with John the Baptist, "Come, Lord Jesus" as we prepare to celebrate the
Incarnation, which also reminds us of Jesus’s promise to come again in Glory. This reality
underlies the ministry of fundraising by the Catholic Foundation. Faith in Jesus Christ is
what sets our Catholic Foundation apart.
This report is a wonderful testimonial to the legacy of faith found here on the prairie. While
South Dakotans are often considered “rugged individualists”, I have found a deep well-spring
of faith in God and a deep understanding of the power of caring as a community. This
combination has served well our parishes and other institutions during the nearly 125 years
of the Diocese of Sioux Falls. The faithful indeed acclaim with John the Baptist, “Come,
Lord Jesus,” but until He does, we are asked to pray fervently, to work hard, and to share our
blessings as we seek to love our neighbor as ourself.
Thank you to all these donors, to the Catholic Foundation board of directors, to the staff and
volunteers who put in countless hours at Catholic Foundation activities throughout the year.

Fund-raising is often thought of as a
necessary but unpleasant activity to support
good causes. However, as Rev. Henri J.M.
Nouwen said, “From a passion for ministry
and spiritual motivation one can say with
conviction, ‘Fund-raising is first and foremost
a form of ministry.’”
Nouwen goes on to say, “Fund-raising is
a very rich and beautiful activity. It is a
confident, joyful, and hope-filled expression
of ministry. In ministering to each other, each
from the riches that he or she possesses, we
work together for the full coming of God’s
Kingdom.”

Stewardship Prayer
Lord God, giver of life and all good gifts,
You anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit who inspired
him to give everything he had for our sake. Move us by
the same spirit of stewardship to share first to the Lord,
for the benefit of all.
By your grace, help us to follow in your footsteps and
become more focused on loving and caring for our
families, our neighbors and our communities.
Lead us to the awareness that everything we are and
everything we have is your gift.
Grant us the spirit of sacrifice to always seek your will
and to share our gifts with our brothers and sisters.
May we be good stewards of all we have received and
cooperate with you in building your kingdom of love

In this spirit of ministry, the Catholic
Foundation raises, manages and distributes
God’s gifts as determined by donor intent.
For 26 years the Catholic Foundation has
been dedicated to this ministry for the
Diocese of Sioux Falls and its members. It
has grown from $440,000 in total assets to
$74.1 million, with another $70.4 million in
documented future estate gift expectancies.
It is with a deep sense of gratitude to God
and to each of the thousands of you who
have joined in this ministry that we present
this annual report of activities of the Catholic
Foundation for Eastern South Dakota. All we
are and all we have is a gift from God - not for
our possession, but for our stewardship - to
nurture and grow and return with increase to
our Lord. In the following pages you will see
the financial statements from the Catholic
Foundation's annual independent audit by
Eide Bailly LLP* for fiscal year ending June
30, 2013. You will also see the Catholic
Foundation's stewardship of its:

St. Paul (2 Cor 9:11)
• 361 permanent named endowments - that are donor
determined - to various ministries totaling $36,108,993
(an increase of 22 endowments)
• 267 agency accounts managed for parishes, schools,
cemeteries and other ministries totaling $19,802,678 an
(increase of 19 agency accounts)
• 92 charitable gift annuities, totaling $2,192,448
• 17 charitable trusts managed, totaling $6,571,921
The ministry of the Catholic Foundation continues to be
blessed with:
• $74.1 million in total funds managed
• 5,786 gifts were received in fiscal year 2013, totaling a
record $21,174,376
• Utilizing Catholic moral and social screens, the
Catholic Foundation’s portfolio returned 7.1%,
annualized, over the past 10 years. Most importantly, the
Catholic Foundation distributed $2,991,204 this past
year to 182 different charities as determined by donors,
including parishes, schools and ministries across eastern
South Dakota and beyond.
For people who care about Catholic values, the Catholic
Foundation is a great tool to pass on their faith. The
Catholic Foundation's investment objectives are
committed to Catholic moral and social values. In
addition, the Catholic Foundation will not make
distributions or grants to charities that are not consistent
with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Many have
chosen the Catholic Foundation to ensure that their legacy
will forever have impact, consistent with their values and
wishes.

The Catholic Foundation continues to maintain a diversified portfolio to weather the everchanging markets managed within the Catholic social and moral guidelines of the policy:

Assets are managed by the Investment and Finance Committees, which work closely with an
investment consultant and professional investment managers. It is important to emphasize
that the Catholic Foundation’s investment objectives are pursued with consideration for
moral and social guidelines, which are consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Corn and soybeans are the bread and butter of most farmers in eastern South Dakota. The
thought of giving these grains to the Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota before it
gets to the bin might seem strange to some.
Yet many farmers are doing just that.
“It (giving grain) is a good way to tithe, or give, without even missing it,” said one couple,
who though wishing to remain anonymous, want others to know how simple and painless it
is to do.
This particular couple has been donating grain annually for the last five years, with their total
gift of grain surpassing $100,000 in value. The donated funds are placed in an advised fund,
meaning the couple advises the Catholic Foundation about which charitable causes they
want to support.
“It can be easy and automatic if you’ve set it up with your elevator,” they said. “You can do
any portion or percentage of your load(s).”
Most elevators and other grain buying entities are cooperative with the process – more than
a dozen have been involved in the last few years. Kelly Bartmann, Gift Planning Specialist
for the Catholic Foundation, said the same idea can, and has been used with any type of
commodity, like livestock.
Being anonymous is optional, but that option for some givers makes all the difference.
There are also potential tax advantages, or as the anonymous couple said, “Double bonus decrease your income for the year while giving to a cause that means a lot to you.”

Katie Wulf was a hard-working, fun-loving,
faithful and joyful parishioner who lived
life very modestly. With no kids of her
own, children were the focus of her surprise
estate gift of over $1 million to Christ
the King Church and School of Sioux
Falls. Now invested through the Catholic
Foundation of Eastern South Dakota, her
will directed $875,000 towards the creation
of a permanent tuition assistance endowment
for the parish's K-6 students, and $200,000
from her insurance policies created a parish
capital improvement account. Katie did as
she could and her vision created a lasting
legacy of faith, hope and love.
