VISION
To be the best water resources and dam
management organization in Africa.
z
MISSION
Our passion at ZRA is to effectively manage
and develop, in an integrated and sustainable
manner, the water resources of the common
Zambezi River and the Kariba Dam Complex
for power generation and other uses to the
total satisfaction of all our stakeholders.
ZRA’s MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND
BUSINESS
Operation and Maintenance of the
Kariba Dam Complex for hydropower
generation and other uses (tourism,
fisheries, urban domestic water
supply, lake transportation, wildlife).
z Developing Dam sites on the common
Zambezi River for hydropower
generation.
z Environmental, water quality and

Whilst Kariba Dam was originally primarily built
for hydro-power generation, its water & the
Lake now have other competing diverse social
& economic uses
The need to reconcile these competing uses of
the water and the Lake, have led the ZRA to
practice IWRM, particularly in times of droughts
ZRA operates in the SADC Region in which a
Protocol on Shared Watercourses (PSW) is in
force
The PSW advocates the creation of new and the
enhancement of existing RBOs to manage River
Basins holistically to enhance sustainability
The PSW advocates the practice of IWRM in all
the shared watercourses in the SADC Region

ZRA is currently the Implementing Agent of
the ZACPRO 6.2 Project, on behalf of the
SADC-WD & the 8 Zambezi riparian states
The major overall objective of the ZACPRO
6.2 Project is to facilitate the creation of
organs & Institutions that will manage the
whole Zambezi River Basin. The ZAMCOM
Agreement was consequently signed in July
2004 and is in the process of ratification
An IWRM Strategy for the Zambezi River
Basin is currently under formulation and
development, with an associated ZAMWIS
Database, through the ZACPRO 6.2 Project
CONCLUSION
z
z
z
z
ZRA is a self financing Bi-National Organisation
ZRA practices IWRM in its own work and
advocates the practice of IWRM in River Basins
ZRA is assisting, through the implementation of
the ZACPRO 6.2 Project, the 8 Zambezi riparian
states to put in place Institutions that will
holistically manage the whole Zambezi River
Basin
ZRA is also assisting, through the
implementation of the ZACPRO 6.2 Project, the
formulation and development of an IWRM
Strategy for the Zambezi River Basin with an
associated ZAMWIS Database
