SUMNERSENTINEL Vol. 3 Issue 1 February 2016 Election Issue Sentinel Definition: A soldier or guard whose job is to stand and keep watch. WHO WE ARE UNDER THE MICROSCOPE Our View Paid for by Sumner Sentinel. Not Authorized by any Candidate or Candidate’s Committee. PO Box 2781 Hendersonville, TN 37077 SUMNER COUNTY SAMPLE BALLOT WHO WE ARE Sumner Sentinel is a group of citizens focused on bringing transparency and accountability to local government through publications, advocacy opportunities and online forums. Sumner Sentinel is organized to empower citizens with knowledge to become catalysts UNDER THE MICROSCOPE As our country focuses on the process of electing a new President of the United States, there is also an important process happening here in Sumner County. Although the importance of who leads our country cannot be overstated, local elections have the power to affect your daily life, even more so than who governs with a pen, and a phone from the White House. Here at the local level, a group of citizens organized the Sumner Sentinel in 2014 to focus on bringing transparency and accountability to local government in order to empower citizens with knowledge. We believe an informed citizen is a citizen empowered to make the best decisions at the ballot box. In order to provide as much information as possible to our readers, the Sumner Sentinel sent questionnaires, and requests for resumes, to all candidates who have qualified to run for Register of Deeds, and Assessor of Property (we did not include General Sessions Judge, Division III, as there is only one candidate running). The Sumner County Primary on March 1st includes four Republican candidates running for the Office of Register of Deeds. There is also one Independent candidate who will face off with the winner of the primary in the August 4th General Election. In the race for Assessor of Property, there are two Republican candidates, and one Democrat on the March 1st Primary ballot. The Republican and Democrat winners will be on the ballot with one Independent candidate in the August 4th General Election. In the Register of Deeds’ race, questionnaires and resume requests were sent to all five candidates via certified mail. All five candidates received the questionnaire as confirmed and time-stamped by the United States Post Office. Only two of the five candidates took the time to complete our request. We would like to thank Register of Deeds candidates, Linda Pitt, and Roxanne McDougal-Barron for their efforts to provide knowledge, and transparency in a timely manner to the voters of Sumner County. A third candidate, Scott Sprouse, sent in a semi-complete submission, and only sent his resume after an email exchange requesting it. His final resume submission did not include employers’ names or employment dates. Sumner Sentinel Election Edition, February 2016 The same process was used to reach out to the candidates for Assessor of Property. Questionnaires, and resume requests were sent by certified mail. Time-stamped delivery was confirmed in all but one case (Mr. Goyne). However, only one candidate for Assessor of Property made the effort to respond to the voters of Sumner County. We would like to thank our current Sumner County Assessor of Property, John Isbell, for his efforts to provide knowledge, and transparency to the citizens of Sumner County. Elected officials, and candidates for office, should make it their priority to respond to requests from citizens. We already have an unresponsive leader in the White House, which is the last thing we want to replicate here in Sumner County. Please take a few minutes to review the candidates’ responses to our questionnaires. Qualifications, experience and a real commitment to conservative principles are all important things to consider in these local elections. We hope these questionnaires help to shed more light on the candidates as you head to the ballot box on Tuesday, March 1st. It may not be easy to know the inner workings of what is happening in Washington, D.C., or even at the Tennessee State Capitol, but at the local level, every voter should take the time to get to know the candidates, and even more important, the candidates’ backgrounds, and where they stand on key issues. That’s why the Sumner Sentinel took the time to reach out to all local candidates in the contested races for the March 1st Primary, and August 4th Sumner County General Elections. We’ve set out to ensure that voters in these local races are informed voters, and not just by recognizing a name or a face, but really getting to know the candidates, and their political history. A Very Red County Sumner is a very “red” county, which means if you are not a Republican your prospects of being elected to public office in a partisan race are very slim. It is for this reason, that many politicians began voting in Republican primaries: to conceal their true ideology, and be allowed to run as a Republican under the Tennessee State Republican Party bylaws. It is relatively easy to spot the imposters, if you pay close enough attention. Some of the candidates in the March 1st election Assessor of Property Register of Deeds As we found out, some candidates are very In the race for Register of Deeds, two of interested in communicating with voters, and the five candidates took the time to submit others are not (see Candidate Questionnaire a complete response in a timely manner. As a We at the Sumner Sentinel are deeply publication focused mostly on conservative, disappointed in the performance of the political commentary, we want to share the unresponsive candidates, and are left to wonder backgrounds of the candidates with our how they would respond to the citizens of readers, especially in the case of the Sumner County if elected to this office. Republican candidates or those claiming to be Republican. 3 are true conservatives. Linda Pitt, and John Isbell, for example, are long-time members of the Republican Party of Sumner County. They’ve fought hard for the principles that define conservatives, and are well respected Republicans in conservative, political circles. Congressman John Lewis (a vocal opponent of voter I.D. laws), it’s very clear that despite the smoke and mirrors, Scott Sprouse is no conservative, and no Republican. The Register of Deeds is an administrative position. Whether or not it should be a position that is decided in a partisan, political race is a moot point: it is decided in this way, and will not change before this election. Do you think someone who is not willing to be completely honest about their values deserves your vote? Due to the preponderance of evidence, we believe Mr. Sprouse is being disingenuous and misrepresenting his true ideology to confuse voters since it is clear that anyone with a “D” beside their name has a hard time getting elected in Sumner County. Other candidates, Scott Sprouse for example, Here at the Sumner Sentinel, we want to although technically allowed to run as a empower citizens with knowledge to be Republican, have defined themselves as able to discern who the most qualified, “liberal” by their consistent actions. conservative candidates actually are.
