LBL refuge areas reopen
for public use this week
Refuge areas in the Land Between the Lakes — spots that
provide undisturbed living and
lounging space for waterfowl and
bald eagles during the winter —
reopen Friday.
Again open to public use will
be Smith, Duncan and Rushing
bays on Kentucky Lake, Duncan
Lake, portions of Energy Lake,
Honker Lake Refuge, Long Creek
Waterfowl Refuge and Fulton/
Honker Bay on Lake Barkley. Hematite Lake on Friday will reopen
to bank fishing only.
Steve Bloemer, LBL biologist
and wildlife program manager,
said the refuges are closed each
fall on Nov. 1 and reopen to public use each March 16 after the
majority of wintering waterfowl
and eagles have departed the
sanctuary areas for nesting territories to the north.
More information about the
public recreation area is available
on the website www.lbl.org or by
calling 270-924-2000.
National forests to continue
charging recreational fees
Yes, fees for recreational uses
at national forests, including
southern Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest, will continue this
year. The U.S. Forest Service reports that a recent story carried
by various news agencies suggesting otherwise was incorrect.
The USFS said a review of recreation fees has been under way
for two years, and a proposal to
reduce the number of national
forests that charge fees has
been made. However, no decision has been reached and won’t
be until after committee reviews
of the proposals, a process that
will run through 2012, according
to the USFS.
Free program offered
on plant pollination
A free program at the Cache
River Wetlands Center along Ill.
37 south of Cypress, Ill., 10:30
a.m.-noon March 17 will reveal
that bees alone aren’t responsible for all the pollinating that’s
necessary for plants, crops and
trees to grow. “Pollinators: Not
Just Honey Bees” will show that
butterflies, moths and wasps
among other join bees in pollinating our landscape. More information: 618-657-2064.

The bluejay way
Scolding songbird’s tirade easier
to endure when it’s not aimed at you
With some people, hearing
the first few notes of a song
makes a mental connection and
momentarily takes them back
to a different time and place,
usually a pleasant association.
I sometimes get the same historical rush — and maybe a bit
of endorphin release — when
I’m breathing in chilled air
and suddenly hear the rather
obnoxious fussing of bluejays.
The raucous tirade of a cluster
of jays immediately transports
me to a perfect autumn morning in the deer woods. It propels me to a particular ridge
and sticks me up an oak where
the smell of the forest floor below me is tinged with acorns. I
imagine distant crows beyond
the bluejays. I strain to hear
hooves crunching in the leaves.
And after about a second
and a half, I recall that it’s just
bluejays raising a ruckus in the
backyard.
Bluejay outbursts aren’t all
that pleasing to most people.
Their voices aren’t soothing
when they take exception to
something or somebody, and
they seem to do that often.
Often scorned because they
are so vocally abrasive and seen
as avian ruffians, bluejays really are one of our more attractive songbirds. They’re bigger
than most, almost a foot long
and with a wingspan that may
top 16 inches.
You’ve got to know a bluejay
when you see one. It’s a pretty
blue with some black and white
markings on its upper body and
a buff white on the underside.
The bluejay also has a prominent crest on its head, a pointy
feathered crown that gets taller
when the bird is upset (which
seems to be frequently).
Bluejays are birds of the
woods, but they do their very
best in and around forest edges. That makes them adaptable
to suburbia where big trees are
scattered through residential
areas and occasional patches
of timber mix with fields and
lawns.
Favored habitat includes a
significant dose of oak trees
because of their dining habits. Bluejays eat a lot of insects,
seeds, grains and fruits, but one
staple of their diet is the acorns
that oaks produce. It’s a seasonal product, of course, but bluejays like squirrels gather acorns
when they’re newly ripe in the
fall and store them for when the
pickings get slim.
In research that involved electronic tracking of bluejay busywork in the fall, it was found
that each of the birds routinely
put away 3,000 to 5,000 acorns
in a season. That seems like
an intolerable number of trips
— but scientists also say that
bluejays know how to carry as
many as five small acorns at one
time by packing them down the
throat, in the mouth and, finally,
the last one or two clenched in
its beak.
It’s logical that a bird that
stores food in the fall would be
a homebody, one that sticks
around throughout the winter.
Indeed, most people that pay any
attention will note that bluejays
are one of those species present
whatever the season. They don’t
bug out when the prospects of
cold, snow and ice arise.
Or do they? Bluejay migration is something ornithologists
note but don’t understand. Bird
authorities now say that some
bluejays do migrate for winter,
probably less than 20 percent
moving southward from their
nesting habitat.
A weird finding is that a bluejay might migrate one winter
but not the next. Maybe the ones
that do migrate get tired of the
same old winter quarters. It’s
like the people who prefer variety in their vacation spots — or,
because of expense, opt for one
of the stay-cations some years.
We do know that bluejays
hang out in small flocks, moreso
in fall and winter than during
the spring nesting season that
we’re now approaching. Some
of these may be migrant birds
from points north, but offend
one bluejay and you may end up
with a dozen berating you.
Steve Vantreese
The bluejay’s brilliant blue color in a dull winter woods is fairly
loud, but not so much as its excited alarm calls.
That vocal tendency is what
alienates some folks to bluejays.
The bluejay call with which people are most familiar, of course,
is that griping alarm call that
partially gives them their name,
that loud, harsh and often repeated jay, jay, jay sound.
If you’re trying to sneak
around in the woods, you don’t
want to come to the attention of
a flock of bluejays. If they see
you and take umbrage, they’ll
tell everybody.
In bluejay language that
screaming call might mean “It’s
a man! It’s a man! It’s a man!”
or just “Hey! Hey! Hey!” But
after 16 bluejays screech it 243
times, vernacular doesn’t matter. By then the whole forest at
least suspects danger afoot.
Bluejays actually make a variety of sounds, some very musical and pleasant on the ear.
They’re vocally talented and
have been known to mimic other birds including hawks.
The boisterous nature of their
alarm calls, however, has cultivated the reputation of bluejays being aggressive. In part
because they’re large, loud
songbirds, they’re perceived as
bullying other birds around.
Yet, ornithologists say bluejays coming to a common food
source are frequently dominated by other species like mourning doves and cardinals that we
would think of as being more
passive.
With positive associations,
even the alarm calls of bluejays
can be sweet. It’s just best not
to offend them and become the
subject of their bitter orations.

Shawnee’s Snake Road closing signals reptilian resurrection
BY STEVE VANTREESE
Here comes the slither
season.
The official observation
of the emergence of snakes
and other cold-blooded
creatures from winter hibernation comes beginning Thursday with the
closing of LaRue Road 345
at the Shawnee National
Forest’s LaRue-Pine Hills
Ecological Area near Wolf
Lake, Ill.
A 2.8-mile section of that
byway known as the Snake
Road is closed each year
March 15-May 15 to shelter
a serpentine migration.
The Snake Road lies between a rocky highland
bluff on one side and wetland swampy habitat on
the other. The immediate
proximity of the two very
different habitat types is
what is especially unique
there.
The event that is formalized by the road closing is
the migration of snakes
and amphibians from wintering sleeping quarters
(hibernaculum) along the
bluff back to the wetlands.
The move from upland to
lowland habitat is an ultra
short crawl or hop, and the
road lies right in the middle.
The migration at LaRuePine Hills has become a
phenomenon popular with
visiting naturalists, armchair herpetologists and
just snake-savvy curiosityseekers. One unusual feature of the migration is the
road-crossing presence of
several cottonmouths in
one of the northernmost
habitats of the poison-

amphibian emergence already has been underway.
It lags during intermittent cold spells, of course,
but some snake activity
already can be seen hereabouts on warm, especially
sunny days.
Chorus frogs have been
singing in wetland areas
for weeks, they are particularly bold about kicking off courting choruses
while a good bit of winter
remains. All sorts of turtles, too, are evident when
they come out to soak up
sun on moderate to warm
days around lakes, ponds
and sloughs.
Like always, the times
are changing, the seasons
shifting, and you might
want to pay more attention
what’s underfoot nowadays.
However, visitors can
witness the happenings
on foot. A hike down the
protected lane won’t exactly put one knee deep in
cottonmouths and watersnakes, but a visit during
prime time of a warming
period might provide the
chance to see some slithery
transients that normally
don’t put themselves on
display.
If you have to be told,
don’t meddle with the migrators.

snake and reptile migration and the road closing,

SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2012
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Discipline will pay off. Surprise everyone by waiting until you are fully
prepared to present what you’ve
been working toward. A partnership
is likely to lead to finishing touches
that will fine-tune your relationship
and lead to interesting options.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take
care of your emotional well-being.
Do whatever it takes to reduce
stress. Engage in a project that will
allow you to use your skills wisely
and more efficiently. You will learn
from participating in physically challenging activities and events.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The
help you offer others will lead to a
lucrative opportunity. The services
and skills you take for granted will
be in demand. Think outside the
box and you will find a way to subsidize your income.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don’t
jump to conclusions or let someone bully you into doing something
you don’t care to do. Stick to your
schedule and focus on your own responsibilities, not those of others.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Changing
your mind is your prerogative, but
expect someone to overreact. Take
on more responsibility at home
and you will please someone who
needs a little extra help.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Join
in and have fun. Get your juices
flowing and build your enthusiasm.
Participation will lead to new friendships and the opportunity to be a
part of something that will ease
your stress and give you something
to look forward to.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You’ll
attract attention, leading to decisions that can alter your lifestyle. A
new look will motivate you to branch
out and try something different. Networking or getting involved in an unusual pastime will be motivational.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Nurture important relationships. Take
the time to listen and to contrib-
ute to a better environment for you
and the ones you love. An unusual
approach to the way you run your
home will help provide purpose to
everyone involved.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):
Make every moment with friends
and family count. Do your best to
compromise if it will help you get
what you want in return. Striving for
equality should be your goal.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):
Make a move or renovate your
residence to better suit your needs.
Avoid unpredictable people. Stick
to the methods you have always
counted on in the past. Love is highlighted and a little romance should
be scheduled.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Rely
on your ability to adapt and devise
unique solutions and you will succeed. Don’t overreact or become
excessive if you want to reach your
goals. A passionate approach regarding a personal relationship will
bring the best results.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Walk
down memory lane and you will revisit projects, plans and goals that
can be revamped, updated and resurrected. A partnership that is on
shaky ground should be rekindled.
Birthday Baby: You are sophisticated and masterful. You strive for
quality over quantity.

People with pets should not bring
animals to other people’s homes
Dear Annie: Last week, my
sister surprised me by showing up unannounced with
her two dogs. She said she
planned to stay for a week.
I do not have dogs and that
is my choice. My sister's dogs
are kept in a truck while she
travels and I feel sorry for
them. But I don't want them
in my house.
Please tell people not to
bring their beloved animals
to other people's homes. We
don't find them nearly as
cute as they do. I don't care
how well mannered they are,
they still shed, need attention and occasionally dig a
hole in the yard. — Annoyed
in Yuma.
Dear Yuma: No one,
relatives
included,
should drop by unannounced and expect to
be put up for days on
end. And bringing their
animals with them is
terribly inconsiderate
unless they have been
Ask Annie
specifically invited. We
know how much people love their dogs and
cats (and birds and pet
snakes), but asking others to be responsible
for housing them is inappropriate and makes
the entire crew unwelcome. Please, people, be
the type of guest who is
enthusiastically invited
back.
Dear Annie: I agree
wholeheartedly with your
suggestion to “Desperate
in Colorado” to bring in her
younger brothers to live with
her. However, I disagree that
she should consider including her alcoholic mom. Her
mother must show that she
desires help by attending AA
meetings, going to counseling or joining a rehab program. Otherwise, “Colorado”
Marvin
will only be inviting problems into her household.
My mother was a violent
alcoholic who died when I
was 23. I'm 53 now and still Blondie
recovering. — Concerned
About Her Brothers.
Dear Concerned: We
agree that living with
Mom would be difficult,
but it may be the only
way “Colorado” can extricate her brothers and
have any control over
how they live.
Dear Readers: Remember to set your Garfield
clocks ahead before you
go to sleep tonight. And
please change the batteries in your smoke
alarms
and
carbon
monoxide detectors.
