ESI-MS, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, and X-ray
crystallography.
 Studied solution chemistry (metal coordination and catalysis)
of novel nickel(II) macrocycles with varied pendant arms.
 Designed biomimetic oxidation catalysts using the biotinavidin technology.
 Synthesized biotinylated aminopyridine ligands, and
characterized nickel(II) and iron(II) metal ligand-conjugates
using ESI-MS, NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies.
 Studied catalytic activity of biotinylated iron(II) complex in
avidin for aqueous oxidation of various substrates.
 Supervised undergraduate research projects in designing
biomimetic oxidation catalysts and novel ligands for Positron
Emission Tomography (PET) imaging.

LECTURE/LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT

“Chemical Safety Training.” Developed a training program for freshmen on handling
chemicals and proper chemical waste disposal in the General Chemistry laboratory
classes.

“Determination of pKa of Acid-Base Indicators.” Developed an experiment which
incorporates spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and electrochemistry (pH meter) in determining
pKa’s of several acid-base indicators. Adapted from J. Chem Educ. 1999, 76, 395398.

“Structure Elucidation by NMR Spectroscopy.” Developed a dry lab experiment that
helps students process, analyze and interpret NMR data using ACD/NMR Processor
Academic Edition (freeware).

“Homemade Spectrofluorometer.” Introduced a student project in Advanced
Analytical Chemistry course for teaching basic fluorescence spectroscopy. Adapted
