ALEKS INITIAL ASSESSMENT
 After the student registers, the student is automatically
assigned an Initial Assessment to complete. There is no need to
schedule this assessment.
 The initial assessment is an overall snapshot of the student’s
knowledge of the current course material.
 The Initial Assessment should be completed within the first 48
hours of the class start date.
 After completing the Initial Assessment, students should begin
working on their ALEKS pie so they do not fall behind in the
course.
 The assessment is approximately 30 questions.
 The questions vary in difficulty.
 The artificial intelligence of ALEKS develops the student’s
individual learning pie.
 The Initial Assessment is a Picture of what the student currently
knows (not what a student can figure out).
Page 3
 Students need to take the Initial Assessment seriously; the
results of the Assessment set up the student’s individual ALEKS
pie. (Sample assessment pies on pages 5-7)
 Student should complete the Initial Assessment using the
following guidelines
o Complete the Assessment without the assistance of learning
aides; no notes, no help from tutors, no help from others, no
help from the internet
o Complete the Assessment within 90 minutes
o No Calculator Usage for 0018 or 0028
 Students who spend a lot of time on the assessment or appear to
have used learning aids should have their assessment reset and
the assessment should be completed again
o WHY? If the student is not placed correctly the student
will not have the opportunity to practice and learn the
topics that the ALEKS assessment shows the student has
mastered. The student will be at a disadvantage throughout
the course if the assessment is not reset immediately.
 To reset the initial assessment and clear the gradebook, ALEKS
corporation needs to be contacted. Please contact your campus
ALEKS administrator for assistance.
o Note, the ALEKS gradebook needs to be cleared so that
there is no memory of the original assessment; ALEKS will
“think” the student knows the material that they received
assistance with.

Page 16
 Assessments are automatically triggered by ALEKS
o progress assessment — based on the number of
topics a student has learned and mastered
o login time assessment — based on the number of
hours a student has worked in ALEKS
 Automatic Assessments are not triggered a couple days
before the objective due date.
 Assessments measure what a student has learned and
retained up to that point. During an assessment,
students are asked questions they recently completed
and on material they are ready to learn.
 If a student did not correctly answer a question (master
a topic) while completing the assessment, the topic is
added back into the student’s pie so the student could
have additional practice on the topic.
