This past year, the other administrators and I
have been reading devotionals out of the book,
by Richard Swenson, called “A Minute of
Margin.” (NavPress, 2003) This week he
caught my attention so much and is so right,
that I have felt the need to share some of his
words with you:
People of faith often tend to fear science. My
feeling, however, is quite different. True science is a
friend of Truth. It is only the misinterpretation and
misapplication of science that ought to be feared. In
contrast, truthful science reveals much about the
power, precision, design, and sovereignty of
God―details we learn nowhere else. And the more
we learn about God, the more we rest in the
shadow of His vast power.

“THE SOLACE OF SCIENCE”
I am not a science teacher. I avoided science as
much as possible in college and when I did have to
study it, I did not throw myself into it. Science
seems all too complicated to me, which is why it
can scare me away. Until now…
The Way
God has allowed us the privilege of living in a time
when great mysteries are being uncovered. No
previous era knew about quantum mechanics,
relativity, subatomic particles, supernovas, ageless
photons, or DNA. These all reveal the stunning
genius of a God who spoke a time-space-matterlight universe into existence, balanced it with
impossible requirements of precision, and then gave
it life.
Does it not stir your heart to realize that in a
millionth of a second, a trillion atoms in your body
turn over―and yet somehow God makes it work?
Does it not deepen your reverence to realize that
God is more impressive than a magnetic cloud ten
million miles in diameter careening through space at
a million miles an hour, or a neutron star that
weighs a billion tons per teaspoon? . . . Or that of
the 1030 (that’s 1 nonillion, or 1 with 30 zeros
behind it) snow crystals necessary to form an Ice
Age, each snowflake―composed of a hundred
million trillion water molecules―is unique in all the
universe? . . . How can that fail to impress?
Science is a close friend of the theology of sovereignty.
When science discovers, faith rightly grows. The
Creator’s strength is the answer for the creature’s
weakness.
Run toward science, not away. Allow science to become
a source of spiritual comfort. Once it is realized that
God stands behind all creation, then science becomes a
display of His genius. And when science is thus seen
through eyes of faith, a new vision of God’s creative
glory brings both solace and strength to anxious hearts.

ELEMENTARY EVENTS
Elementary T-Shirts – This year we are ordering tshirts for all our elementary students, grades PreK – 5th.
These t-shirts will be worn every Friday by students
during chapel time and represent our theme for the
year, “The Way”. Students will be able to take the tshirt home at the end of the year. We are asking each
student to contribute $6.00 towards the purchase of the
t-shirt. This money can be brought in to their classroom
teacher. If this expense is a burden for your family,
please contribute what you can. Thank you!
Community Concert – Next week Monday our 4th
and 5th graders will have the opportunity to enjoy a
community concert at Gallup HS. The Alliance Brass
Quintet will be performing for our 4th – 8th graders
along with other students from the Gallup area. We are
fortunate to have these opportunities to experience
these cultural events.
Parent / Teacher Conferences – P/T conferences
will be held on Wednesday, Oct 15 and Thursday, Oct
16. A signup sheet will be coming home with your
child on Friday of this week. Please sign up for the
time that works best for you and return it to school
with your child by Thursday, Oct 2. After we process
these we will confirm the day and time with you.
Report Cards – Report cards will be sent home with
your child(ren) in grades 1-5 on Monday, October 13.
Pre K and Kdg students will not receive a report card
for the first quarter, but progress will be discussed at
the conference time.
The Way
Homework Time - During lunch period each day,
12:15 - 12:55 p.m., students have the opportunity to
stay in the classroom, get a boxed lunch through the
Fellowship Hall and work on their school work.
We understand students have busy lives outside of
school and we want to provide a time where they
can get a jumpstart on their studies and homework.
If you find your child doesn’t have enough time at
home to get their work done, please encourage
them to stay in at lunch and get working.
NWEA Testing - The middle school will be testing
students using the NWEA test throughout the rest
of September. Students will be tested in Reading,
Language Arts, and Math. The 7th and 8th grade
will also be tested in Science. The tests take between
45 minutes to 90 minutes each. Tests results will
help direct classroom and individual instruction.
Exploratory Session II - This week, new
exploratory sessions begin for the middle school.
Students had the chance to pick from a list of
choices that included origami, geography bee prep,
jazz band, typing, volleyball, flag football, study
sessions and more. Find out what exploratory class
your child is in and find out the different activities
and learning that is taking place. Students with low
progress report grades will be in the study sessions
to give them support needed to bring their grades
up.
Science with Calvin Christian - Through the use
of technology two 7th/8th grade science classes will
be conducting a joint science investigation with the
8th grade students at Calvin Christian Middle
School in Grand Rapids, MI. They will be
examining solar cookers and testing them out in
two totally different climates and environments (MI
and NM) and sharing their information with each
other. This is a great opportunity for students to see
how scientists collaborate with each other for more
accurate findings and results. Look for details in future

HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
First Progress Report- If you did not get your child’s
progress report in the mail last week please let the High
School office know. Progress Reports give you a
snapshot of how your child is doing academically up to
this point in the school year. It does not determine
athletic eligibility, but can impact extracurricular travel
during the school day. If you want to read more on this
“Mid-Quarter Eligibility” please refer to page 6 of the
Parent – Student handbook.
NWEA Testing Continues- We had a great start to
NWEA testing last week! This testing will continue for
9th and 10th graders through the end of the first
quarter.
High School Service Day
On Friday, October 10 the entire High School Student
body will participate in a service day around our local
community. The Rehoboth Christian School National
Honor Society has been working hard putting together
the plans for this event. We look forward to the
opportunity to get all of our High School students into
the Gallup community to make an impact through
service!
High School Testing Day
Rehoboth Christian High School will take part in its
annual testing day on Wednesday, October 15. This
year’s testing day will be different from past years in
that both our 11th and 10th grade students will
participate in the PSAT-NMSQT. Now, you may be
wondering what is the PSAT-NMSQT? This long list
of letters stands for the Preliminary SAT/National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and it functions as
The Way
the initial qualifier for the National Merit
Scholarship Corporation competition. This
Scholarship program is very prestigious and
qualifying for it starts with an 11th grade student’s
PSAT-NMSQT score. 10th graders taking it will be
getting a preview prior to them taking it the
following year for scholarship qualification. More
information on this test can be found at
http://www.collegeboard.com/psat
9th graders will complete their NWEA testing
during the High School Testing Day, and 12th
graders will spend time working on their Senior
Portfolios as well as College and Scholarship
Applications.
