Parent News Thursday, September 25, 2014 PO Box 41 Rehoboth, NM 87322 Phone: 863-4412 Fax: 863-2185 Email: [email protected] Website: www.rcsnm.org This past year, the other administrators and I have been reading devotionals out of the book, by Richard Swenson, called “A Minute of Margin.” (NavPress, 2003) This week he caught my attention so much and is so right, that I have felt the need to share some of his words with you: People of faith often tend to fear science. My feeling, however, is quite different. True science is a friend of Truth. It is only the misinterpretation and misapplication of science that ought to be feared. In contrast, truthful science reveals much about the power, precision, design, and sovereignty of God―details we learn nowhere else. And the more we learn about God, the more we rest in the shadow of His vast power. UPCOMING EVENTS Fri., 9/26Mon., 9/29Mon, 9/29 Wed., 10/1- Fall Carnival Personnel Committee Meeting TTT District Meeting NHS Blood Drive INs & OUTs “THE SOLACE OF SCIENCE” I am not a science teacher. I avoided science as much as possible in college and when I did have to study it, I did not throw myself into it. Science seems all too complicated to me, which is why it can scare me away. Until now… The Way God has allowed us the privilege of living in a time when great mysteries are being uncovered. No previous era knew about quantum mechanics, relativity, subatomic particles, supernovas, ageless photons, or DNA. These all reveal the stunning genius of a God who spoke a time-space-matterlight universe into existence, balanced it with impossible requirements of precision, and then gave it life. Does it not stir your heart to realize that in a millionth of a second, a trillion atoms in your body turn over―and yet somehow God makes it work? Does it not deepen your reverence to realize that God is more impressive than a magnetic cloud ten million miles in diameter careening through space at a million miles an hour, or a neutron star that weighs a billion tons per teaspoon? . . . Or that of the 1030 (that’s 1 nonillion, or 1 with 30 zeros behind it) snow crystals necessary to form an Ice Age, each snowflake―composed of a hundred million trillion water molecules―is unique in all the universe? . . . How can that fail to impress? Science is a close friend of the theology of sovereignty. When science discovers, faith rightly grows. The Creator’s strength is the answer for the creature’s weakness. Run toward science, not away. Allow science to become a source of spiritual comfort. Once it is realized that God stands behind all creation, then science becomes a display of His genius. And when science is thus seen through eyes of faith, a new vision of God’s creative glory brings both solace and strength to anxious hearts.
