Dear Friends,
This past year, we have been celebrating our two decades
of service by remembering the lives we have touched and
changed, by honoring those who have been a part of BCC,
and by embracing the future through a series of festivities.
Twenty years ago, BCC was founded to fill an unmet need
in the community for those facing breast cancer. Today,
that gap in services still exists for ovarian cancer patients
and their families. Women with ovarian cancer need support,
hope, and inspiration from others who have faced, survived,
and lived with ovarian cancer. When these women come to
our center looking for information and support, they express
how much they wish there was a place like BCC for them.
In response to this overwhelming need for emotional
support for ovarian cancer patients, and in honor of our
20th Anniversary, BCC is expanding our programs and
services to support both breast cancer and ovarian cancer
clients. As an organization committed to ensuring that no
one faces breast cancer alone, we feel privileged to be able to
fulfill that same commitment for those facing ovarian cancer.
This is an exciting time for the future of BCC’s cancer
support and we thank you for your loyal friendship to BCC.
Sincerely,
Did You Know?
For five consecutive years, Breast Cancer Connections has
received Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four stars
for financial accountability and transparency – an honor
bestowed upon only 4% of U.S. charities.

INDIVIDUALS
SERVED
We are committed to maintaining and growing a set of comprehensive programs that meet the
needs of the breast cancer community. Pilot programs offered during the period of July 1, 2012
through June 30, 2013 include:
Pilates Matwork
for Rehabilitation
Creating
Connections
This class focuses on postural alignment,
flexibility, and core strengthening. Exercises
and the flow of the class are designed to
address limitations specific to breast cancer–
related surgeries and subsequent treatments.
Once a month, Breast Cancer Connections
extends our office hours and features a guest
speaker who presents topics relevant to clients
during their treatment and beyond, such as:
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a martial art that has proven
benefits for health, especially related to
maintaining strength and balance. The
class teaches Tai Chi as a moving meditation.
Students learn Tai Chi movements specifically designed for those who are currently
undergoing or completing medical treatment
for breast cancer.
• Nutrition
• Lymphedema
• Health Benefits of Tea
My Personal
Decision Guide
We developed this tool to help our clients
consider their cancer treatment options
intellectually, emotionally, and practically,
then organize those thoughts to make
informed decisions.
Caregivers
Support Group
This group enables caregivers to discuss the
challenges of their role, and to gain support
and education from other caregivers. Selfcare is emphasized as an important part of
effectively caring for others.

vangeline, 39, was working part-time and
caring for her two young children when she discovered a lump while breast-feeding. “I went to
a clinic and the doctor told me that I needed a
mammogram and an ultrasound. I didn’t know
how I was going to pay for those tests,” recalled
Evangeline. The doctor referred Evangeline to
the Gabriella Patser Program, where the Program
Coordinator, Donaji Olivares, quickly became her
advocate. In addition to setting up financial aid for
Evangeline’s ultrasound, mammogram, and biopsy, Donaji provided emotional support and help
in navigating the medical system.
“Being low income, and with no medical insurance, I thought I would never get treatment for
my cancer. It was a very scary time,” Evangeline
said. After her diagnosis, she hit roadblocks while
trying to get referred to a treatment program. “I
was nervous because it was taking a long time,”
continued Evangeline. “I called Donaji to see if she
could help and she got me into a different hospital
the next day!”
“Being low income, and
with no medical insurance,
I thought I would never get
treatment for my cancer.
It was a very scary time.”
Since her treatment began, Evangeline has visited
BCC’s resource center and participated in programs like the Mad Hatter Tea Party Scarf and Hat
Workshop. “I loved this event because they taught
me how to look better, which made me feel better,”
she said. “BCC’s nutrition classes were also very
informative. I learned what foods to avoid to help
my body fight the cancer.”
Evangeline is grateful for the community support
she received from Breast Cancer Connections. “I
don’t know where I would be now if it wasn’t for the
Patser Program. Everyone, even the less fortunate,
should be able to receive care. BCC helped to save
my life. I’m so grateful for programs like Patser,
and glad they can help so many women like me.”

W
hen Phyllis Hall was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 1995, Dr. Ellen Mahoney, a BCC
Co-Founder, was her breast surgeon. “As soon as
she gave me my diagnosis, she sent me upstairs
to the Community Breast Health Project [Breast
Cancer Connections], where I received education
and support. That was when CBHP was just above
my doctor’s Palo Alto office,” Phyllis recalled.
When her treatment ended, Phyllis wanted to help
others facing breast cancer. She began volunteering
at CBHP as a Helpliner in 1998, providing emotional
support to newly diagnosed women. Over the past
15 years, Phyllis has helped thousands of individuals
and has been instrumental in the growth of BCC’s
programs. With her background in information
systems, she helped establish a Client and Buddy
database—an essential and valuable tool for the
organization. She served a six-year term on the
Board of Directors, and continues to volunteer as
a Helpliner every week.
“I really enjoy how BCC has evolved,” Phyllis said.
“The staff is not afraid to do more than one thing
and neither are the volunteers. There is such a core
group of dedicated people here. My best memories
are the people, from Board to staff to volunteers
to clients.”
BCC would not be the organization it is today
without Phyllis’s outstanding contributions and
commitment to the clients’ well-being.

Spotlight
Fran Codispoti and Ken Schroeder are equally passionate about giving
locally. “We believe that if you have the means to help, you should do
something for your community,” Ken said. The couple proudly support
Breast Cancer Connections’ mission and have been donating since 1998.
“BCC is a unique and vital resource in the Bay Area,” Fran said. “They
meet the needs of early detection, treatment support, and survivorship
—so clients can concentrate on healing. It’s a vital and worthy cause.”
Fran strongly believes in women helping women—the primary reason
she was drawn to the organization. “It’s a powerful energy,” she said. Fran
has volunteered with BCC since 2005, where she has served on the Board
of Directors, provided fundraising guidance and support, and most recently
co-chaired the 20th Anniversary Gala: A Night in the Mediterranean.

Fran continues to support BCC for many reasons: “I love that we help
low-income uninsured women and men because I’m always trying to help
the underdog,” she said. “I also love that as BCC grows, it adapts to meet
the evolving needs of clients. Now in our 20th year, we have done just that
by developing programs for ovarian cancer support.” She continued, “And
I care about these people—the professional staff, dedicated volunteers, and
everyone in our community who has been touched by breast and, now,
ovarian cancer.”
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Fran and Ken for their continued support
of Breast Cancer Connections.
“I care about these people – the professional

MEET SUSAN
E
veryone who meets Susan, 57, describes her
as strong. Tall and confident, she is boisterous and
loves to tell stories, always with wit, humor, and a
charming Tennessee accent. When her breast cancer
diagnosis came in May 2012, she was stoic. She
faced her cancer alone, with no significant other,
close friends, or family to lean on. “It all happened
so fast,” recalled Susan. “I’ve lived on my own since
I was 15 and have always been in control of my life.
I was scared but had no one to talk to.”
Susan learned about BCC at her doctor’s office and
was immediately drawn to our new Tai Chi program.
“Tai Chi gave me something to focus on that I had
control over. It was a healthy distraction. It has
made me more aware of what’s going on inside my
body and made me stronger.”
What’s most impressive about Susan’s strength is
how it inspires others. After participating in Tai
Chi for over a year, she’s become the star pupil
in the Tai Chi course, helping other students and
lifting their spirits with her humorous stories and
encouragement.
Like many cancer patients, survivorship for Susan
meant starting over in some ways. “Everything
17
has changed. It’s like a whole new life. Like a baby.
After chemo, I had baby fresh hair growing out of
my 56-year-old head,” she laughed. But for Susan,
surviving cancer means a whole lot more. In a
9-month period, she was not only diagnosed with
breast cancer but treated for melanoma as well,
and a rare adrenal cancer diagnosis has given her
a prognosis of five years. As Susan struggles to
define her “new” life, she’s finding strength and
comfort from BCC’s therapists and support groups.
“I’m finally learning how to ask for help,” Susan
said through tears.

“Somebody you know needs
this place. I was lucky to find it.
BCC saved my life.”
When asked what survivorship means to her,
Susan replied, “I’m happy to be here, but I hope
to improve myself as I go on surviving.” Always
incredibly giving and selfless, she added, “I’d really
like to be able to help others. That’s what truly
makes me happy.” When asked why people should
