The Diwali Festival will offer up a mixture of SA and Indian culture Get ready for ‘Phantom of the Opera’ The new production of The Phantom of the Opera started rehearsal on Monday October 10. Pieter Toerien welcomed the cast and international creative team at Artscape Opera House, saying that at the opening night of the original production in London he could only dream of bringing the show to South Africa, due to the political situation, never mind bringing it twice. The creative team of Rainer Fried the Assistant Director, Guy Simpson the Musical Supervisor and Patricia Merrin the Associate Choreographer will put the company of 40 performers though six weeks of intense rehearsal before the first preview on November 22. Pieter Toerien first produced ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ in South Africa in 2004 and after the sold out season in Cape Town and Pretoria the South African company toured to the Far East. The musical tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide. 4 The Next 48hOURS www.48hours.co.za 14 October - 20 October 2011
