Mother Nature has converted what was once thousands of acres of row crops into a mosaic of natural habitats
that is home to birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. Seeds that were dormant for 80 years have sprung to life by
just adding water. Life as it was for millennia has returned to Emiquon Preserve in Fulton County.
WTVP presents a cinematic ½ hour production of the beautiful journey of, Nature Returns to Emiquon on
March 15th at 7 PM. Join us as we show how beauty has returned to this parcel of land along the Illinois River
in Fulton County. What were once thousands of acres of row crops and cattle are now restored to natural
habitats.
Before 1900, the land was a backwater environment of lakes, prairies, wetlands and forests. But the rich soils
adjacent to the river attracted farmers in the 20th century. They erected levees to keep the river water out and
pumps to remove water from the fields. The natural flow of the Illinois River was altered, causing issues with
more frequent flooding, overflow that the backwaters once absorbed.
With help from The Nature Conservancy, Emiquon is experiencing a rebirth on the nearly seven-thousand
acre plot of land. The habitat restoration has welcomed the return of birds, fish, amphibians and
reptiles. Mother Nature, through its resurgence at Emiquon Preserve, has become a model of what may
be replicated along other parts of the river and elsewhere.

Two dramatic season finales on one night!
Mercy Street—7 p.m.
First on Mercy Street, allegiances blur and loyalties shift as the war pushes the
drama beyond the hospital. Follow the growing chaos at Alexandria’s Mansion
House, the precarious position of the Green family and the changing situation
of the burgeoning black population
Victoria—8 p.m.
Then watch as the drama follows Victoria from the time she becomes a queen
in 1837 at the age of 18 through her relationship with Lord Melbourne, her first
prime minister and intimate friend, and her courtship and marriage to Prince
Albert. Famous for her candor and spirit, she was the first woman who seemed
to have it all: a passionate marriage and the job of being queen of the world’s
most important nation.
Catch up on both shows now on WTVP Passport.

Africa’s Great
Civilizations
Wednesday, March 1 at 8 p.m. and
Thursday, March 2 at 9 p.m.
AFRICA’S GREAT CIVILIZATIONS, is hosted, executive produced and written by Henry Louis
Gates, Jr. In this new documentary,
Professor Gates travels the length
and breadth of Africa to chronicle
the continent’s history from a firmly African perspective. His journey takes him from the city of
Great Zimbabwe to the pyramids
of the Kingdom of Kush in Sudan,
from the spectacular rock-hewn
churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia to
the continent’s oldest university in
Fez, from the Blombos Caves in
South Africa to Ancient Mali, the
empire of King Mansa Musa, still
thought to be the wealthiest person
ever to have lived.
In AFRICA’S GREAT CIVILIZATIONS, Gates chronicles a
sweeping 200,000-year journey of
discovery, showing the complexity,
grandeur and diversity of many
millennia of undiscussed and
unknown details about Africa’s
compelling and dramatic history.
Gates presents — for the first time
for a popular audience — a new
vision not only of Africa’s pivotal
place in world history, but also the
world’s relation to Africa.
Africa’s contributions to the human
community’s development of art
and language, writing and religion,
agriculture and government, the
arts and sciences are commonly
misunderstood, or even ignored.
This landmark series presents a
new and comprehensive narrative
about Africa and the history of the
extraordinary diverse peoples of its
continent, from the Mediterranean
Sea to the Cape of Good Hope,
from the Red Sea and down the
Nile River, and from the Indian
Ocean to the Atlantic.

To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters
On MASTERPIECE—Sunday, March 26 at 8 p.m.
Ever since they were revealed to the world as quaint country-women and notthe
notorious Bell brothers of their pseudonyms, the Brontë sisters have fascinated
legions of devoted readers. MASTERPIECE brings these remarkable literary
geniuses to life with a beautifully filmed and acted two-hour drama.
Written and directed by Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax),
To Walk Invisible makes a perfect companion to MASTERPIECE’s past adaptations of Brontë novels: The Tennant of Wildfell Hall (1997, Peabody Award),
Wuthering Heights (1998 and 2009), and Jane Eyre (2007, three Primetime
Emmys®).
Depicting the evolution of secluded, dutiful clergyman’s daughters into authors
of the most controversial fiction of the 1840s, the drama stars Finn Atkins (Eden
Lake) as Charlotte, who shocked society with her edgy epic, Jane Eyre; Chloe
Pirrie (War and Peace) as Emily, author of the darkly gothic and disturbing
Wuthering Heights; and Charlie Murphy (Happy Valley) as Anne, whose true-tolife love story The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was deemed “coarse and disgusting” by
Victorian critics.
Also starring are Jonathan Pryce (Wolf Hall) as their distracted father, Reverend
Patrick Brontë; and Adam Nagaitis (Houdini and Doyle) as the sisters’ only
brother, Branwell, whose wild and dissipated life contributed to vivid characters in
each of their novels.
To Walk Invisible was filmed in and around Haworth, the picturesque Yorkshire
village where the Brontë sisters lived and which is now a mecca for Brontëphiles
from all over the world. Scenes at their parsonage home were shot in an exact
replica that recreates the feel of a lived-in mid-19th-century provincial dwelling,
with the sisters congregating around the dining table to pen their stories and plot
their editorial strategy.
Based largely on Charlotte’s voluminous letters, the film follows the Brontë sisters
in the eventful three-year period that saw them rise from ordinary, unmarried
women, taking care of the household and their widowed father, to the secret
authors of the world’s most sensational literature.

Although he never suspected it, Branwell was the inspiration. A would-be poet
and artist, he was a complete failure due to alcoholism and opium addiction. As
Reverend Brontë slowly went blind, Branwell was on an even more precipitous
downward slide, inciting the sisters to do something to keep the family out of the
poor house.

Schedule is subject to change without notice.
Here at WTVP, we are proud to debut the Stacey Fund in honor
of Stacey Tomczyk. Stacey was known for her great love of local
programming and community events. She had a passion for PBS
Kids and early education and was the guiding force behind WTVP’s
statewide Young Writers and Illustrators Competition.
The Stacey Tomczyk Fund has been established using the memorial donations made
in Stacey’s name. With the blessing of Chet and Connie Tomczyk, we are pleased to
preserve Stacey’s love for local programming and productions.

WTVP is for everyone.
Public media makes a special effort to serve
children, minorities, and low-income Americans.
It reaches more than 98% of the U.S. population.
Public Media Fact Sheet
Our public media engages more than half of all
Americans every month. 170 million Americans
connect through over 350 public television stations,
1,100 public radio stations, hundreds of online
resources, in-person events, and on-the-ground
services.
• Public broadcasting stations leverage every $1.00 of federal funding invested to raise an additional $6.00 on their own.
Our public media costs less than a cup of coffee.
Annually, the federal contribution to public media
amounts to $1.35 per American.
• The federal investment in public media is roughly one one-hundredth of a
percent (0.01%) of the federal budget.
• The cost of public media per American each year is $1.35.
• An annual national survey conducted over the last 13 years has consistently confirmed that PBS and its member stations are ranked first in trust
among nationally known institutions and are considered an “excellent” use
of tax dollars by the American public, second only to military defense.
• According to the 2011 national survey by the bipartisan polling firms of
Hart Research and American Viewpoint, more than two-thirds of American voters (69%) oppose proposals to eliminate government funding of
public broadcasting.
Closed Captioning
• Since its inception, the public television system has been instrumental in
working closely with people with disabilities to ensure full and fair access
to educational programming and resources. Public television has been at
the forefront in the development of captioning and technology.

families than any other kids TV network.
• Public television educational programming and resources have been
proven to help children from low-income families close the achievement
