Project / Stage 12 - Parks General Upgrades
Renwick Street Playground
Alexandria • Concept Plan • Schematic Layout
The playground is open to Renwick Street and Renwick Lane/Jennings Street
with good views through the park.
There are 2-storey residences along the eastern and western boundaries.
The park is quiet and is enjoyed by local children who engage in informal
games on the grass. Limited play opportunities are provided by the existing
equipment.
Design approach
The proposed design retains the informal local park character and improves
the playground for local children. The lawn area is maximised for passive
recreation and a range of seating provided.
The proposed design aims to provide a place where different activities occur.
The improvements will include:
• A variety of spaces for different activities
• A variety of places to sit
• New playground equipment for a variety of activities including sliding,
climbing, swinging and imaginative play
N
• New recycled brick path, fence and gate to improve pedestrian access
between Jennings Street/Renwick Lane and Renwick Street

Renwick Street Playground
Alexandria • Concept Plan • Playground facilities
New play equipment will be selected to cater for a greater range of age groups
and will complement the natural character of the Melaleuca trees in the park. The
design provides opportunities for climbing, swinging, balancing and playing in a
cubby house.
New shrubs along the southern edges of the park will create nature play
opportunities with appropriate plants, mulch and stepping stones.
A tall wind sculpture is proposed to create a focal point, provide visual interest
and raise awareness of wind and weather.
Rubber ‘softfall’ will be placed beneath play structures and elements where
safety surfacing is required to meet safety standards.

Materials and Finishes
Examples of materials and finishes being considered
The materials and finishes are intended to reflect the natural character of the playground.
They will complement the local area surrounding the park.
Recycled sandstone blocks and timber decks will provide seating. The timber platforms
located along the eastern and western edges of the lawn in angular arrangements
provide different areas for people to sit quietly or socialise with others.
Recycled brick paving
The pathway through the park will be made with recycled bricks.
Planting Strategy
Low shrubs, ground cover and native grasses will ensure clear and safe visual
surveillance is maintained in the park.
Plant species that are tough and resilient will be used in nature play zones.
Timber platform and timber path
No additional tree planting is proposed in the park as established trees already provide
shade.
