Reading
Rules! 2013
Mayor Byron W. Brown’s
2013 Kids Summer Reading Challenge
Dear Parent:
I am proud to announce that this summer I will be sponsoring my 12th Annual Reading Rules! 2013 Kids
Summer Reading Challenge. Once again, our goal is to partner with the Buffalo Public Schools, the New
York State Department of Education and many other agencies in an effort to maximize the reading potential
of our youth throughout Western New York and encourage their developmental success. In previous years,
more than 7,500 students have completed the Summer Reading Challenge and discovered that reading can
be fun, exciting and rewarding. Last year, more than 1,500 champion readers completed the Challenge!
The program is easy to participate in and is open to any child in any public, parochial, private, charter
or home school entering grades K-12 in any school district. All of the instructions and necessary
information are included in this brochure.
Each child who successfully participates in the Summer Reading Challenge will receive an invitation to the
program’s final ceremony where he or she will be given a certificate of achievement, prizes donated by area
businesses and cultural organizations, and entry into a raffle for the chance to win several great prizes. Last
year, prizes raffled off included scholarships, computers, school supplies, bicycles, video game systems and
many other items.
I encourage you to enroll your child today and wish you and your family a safe, productive, and rewarding
summer. For more information, please call (716) 851-7323 or log on to www.city-buffalo.com/readingrules.
Sincerely,
Some prizes won by past participants:

Dear Readers,
As soon as you register…….START READING!!!!!!
I am happy to inform you that we will continue our inter-generational component of the Summer Reading Challenge,
which is the Seniors Reading Corner. Last year, we had over 400 participants reading to family members and senior
citizens at senior centers and nursing homes throughout the City of Buffalo. This program is a great opportunity for our
young people to show off their reading skills to seniors, while providing community service and enhancing their
academic skills. The young readers who participate in the Seniors Reading Corner will receive credit for one summary
submission for reading to a senior citizen for at least 30 minutes. To participate please check YES on your Summer
Reading Challenge Application and we will send you instructions and a sign-off form to be signed by a senior citizen or
your parent after you have read to them. Thank you for your participation and have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Byron W. Brown
