An Update Brought to you by St. Mary’s Foundation
You Can Support Babies like Drew with a gift to the NICU
Expecting a child is an experience like no other. The
joy, excitement and anticipation are palpable, but for
some couples, things don’t always go as planned.
Megan and Jon Nelson know first-hand the fear and
uncertainty parents experience when faced with a
premature birth. Their son Drew was born early at
25 weeks weighing only 2lb. 3oz.
“We knew that Drew had a pretty good chance, but
that it would be an uphill battle from the start for him.”
Drew spent 98 days in the St. Mary’s Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Megan and Jon
spent many nights in St. Mary’s Ronald McDonald
Family Room® to be close by. During Drew’s long
stay in the NICU, Megan was faced with the reality of
having to return to her job as a school teacher in their
home town of Beloit. Megan and Jon faced a tough
challenge that many parents of NICU babies face—the
need to return to work or care for children at home,
while desperately wanting to be at the side of their
fragile baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
• A new transport incubator to safely bring
fragile newborns to St. Mary’s NICU from
hospitals throughout southern Wisconsin
With AngelEye®
camera technology,
parents of babies
like Drew would
have access to
view and talk to
their infant
24 hours
a day.
• AngelEye® secure webcam technology
to provide parents with 24x7 access to
view and talk to their tiny NICU baby.
This special connection allows interaction
between parents and their infants, which
helps babies grow and provides parents
with peace of mind.

Welcome Jon Rozenfeld, President St. Mary’s Hospital
A note from St. Mary’s Foundation Executive Director
We are blessed in Wisconsin to have reminders of the continuity of life; even when at
times it seems there is little continuity in our everyday lives. The vibrant colors of
spring follow the stark beauty of winter, and the heat of summer is followed by cool
autumn breezes.
For over one hundred years, St. Mary’s has been bringing new lives into the world and
caring for individuals through all the seasons of life. St. Mary’s has been a constant in
our community and continues to be a place of joyful beginnings, healing, and dignity
at end-of-life.
Jon Rozenfeld
The core values of St. Mary’s connect our rich history to our exciting future. We are
pleased that Jon Rozenfeld has been named the new president of St. Mary’s Hospital.
Jon is no stranger to St. Mary’s; he served as executive vice president/chief operating officer at
the hospital from 2006 to 2012.
He is deeply committed to our core values of compassion, respect, excellence, stewardship and community.
Jon not only brings continuity to St. Mary’s, he brings more than 25 years of executive leadership experience
to his role. We are delighted to welcome Jon and his wife, Jill Korey, back to St. Mary’s and the Madison
community.
Thank you for your on-going commitment to the future of this exceptional Hospital. Your gifts today, and
your consideration of a gift at the end-of-life through an estate designation, will ensure that St. Mary’s
remains committed to innovative and affordable health care.
With gratitude,
Sandra L. Lampman, Executive Director
Board Spotlight
Ave Bie, Secretary, St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors
What does St. Mary’s mean to you?
St. Mary’s means so much to the entire community
while on a personal level, it is a very special place
to me and my family. Our two children, the source
of our greatest joy, were born at St. Mary’s where
I experienced the healing ministry so fundamental
to the mission. The mission, established in 1872,
still guides St. Mary’s today as each and every
representative from the nurses, the doctors, to
the support staff and leadership carry out their
responsibilities. St. Mary’s means compassionate
care, a community partner, a spiritual presence
and an organization committed to care for those in
need at a physical and spiritual level. As a member
of the Board of St. Mary’s Foundation I support the
many efforts of St. Mary’s and in some small way
feel that I walk with them to achieve this mission.
What motivates you to serve on the Board?
I am motivated to serve on St. Mary’s Foundation
Board because it allows me to be an advocate
for a place that is grounded in a mission I am
passionate about. I feel that St. Mary’s appreciates
the personal attributes each Board member brings
to the organization and this makes all of us feel
good about what contribution we are making.
Momentum
We all learn from each other
while giving back to St. Mary’s
and the broader community.
It’s not often that you get the
opportunity to do both.
Please share your thoughts on
Ave Bie
the value of philanthropy as it
relates to health care.
Philanthropy in any environment is a critical
component that speaks directly to the quality
of life in a community. Now more than ever,
philanthropy and health care are intertwined. With
the implementation of wide spread health care
reforms and sweeping government policy changes,
the window to opportunity for foundations has been
opened. As a member of the St. Mary’s Foundation
Board, I believe we are part of the opportunity that
exists to engage supporters and communities in
a new way, bringing philanthropy and support to
this new health care model. Our efforts and the
community’s participation in these efforts impact
the basic needs of thousands of families needs
of which could not be met without the generous
philanthropic efforts of so many.
Mission Moment - Carol A. Viviani
Mission
Moment
A 1956 alumna of the St. Mary’s School of
Nursing, Carol’s love for her fellow nursing
school alumni, her profession of nursing, her
patients and physician colleagues, as well
as her family, shaped her life of service.
She spent her entire nursing career in
various positions at St. Mary’s. Then after
retiring in 1997, St. Mary’s holistic approach
to patient care led her to become a
volunteer in the Pastoral Care department
as a Minister of Holy Communion and a
patient companion in the No One Dies
Alone program. As a long-time nurse
and volunteer, Carol understands that
St. Mary’s offers more than exceptional
health care, it offers spiritual healing and
comfort to patients and families. This
deeply held conviction inspired Carol to
establish the Carol A. Viviani Endowment
to acknowledge and support the work of
the Pastoral Care team, and to name
St. Mary’s in her will. Carol’s
unwavering love for St. Mary’s is
rooted in our mission:
“With a gift designated in my will, I can have financial security
Through our exceptional health
now as well as the pride and joy of knowing I will leave a final gift to
care services, we reveal the

healing presence of God.
BABY BRICKS & TRIBUTE BRICKS:
Celebrate a birth – past or present!
Create a long-lasting memory at St. Mary’s with an
engraved garden brick. Celebrate a birth – past or present
- or pay tribute to someone dear. Each engraved garden
brick commemorates a precious moment, someone loved,
or someone lost, and provides a meaningful tribute that
can be revisited from year to year. Generations of families
are honored and remembered in the many engraved bricks
that beautify the Courtyard Garden of St. Mary’s. For more

Words from the Heart
“God’s blessings to all on 4East Cardiovascular Care Unit, and thanks to Respiratory Therapy for helping
me breathe. What outstanding care, patience and love you showed me. I want you all to know you are
all in my prayers thanking God for putting you in my life.”

The art of healing through greatest need Gifts
Made possible by your generous gifts to St. Mary’s Foundation, new art work
brightens the halls of the 2SW Psychiatry unit. The majority of the images
represent Madison or regional bucolic imagery to establish a sense of place
which is calming and comforting to patients – aiding the healing process.
A grateful Christina Mignon, director of the Psychiatry unit, stands near one of the
new art pieces made possible by generous gifts to St. Mary’s Foundation.
