ART'SCORNER I'venoticedthattoday’stelevisionandnewspapertraveladvertisementsarefilledwith enticementsforvacationersandweekendget-out-of-townersdesignedtoappealto membersofthemostsophisticatedsegmentsofsocietywhowishtoexperiencereadymadeheavenonearth.Parentsinourwell-appointedsuburbsthesedaysprovidetheir childrennearlyunlimitedexposuretoallmannerofsightseeingincludingthemany wondersofourbeautifulnationaswellastheworld.Anycasualobserveroftheactivity inanairportterminalduringtheholidaytravelperiodcanattesttothemovementofvastnumbersofthe populationtoanever-widerarrayofdestinations.I'mcertainlynotcriticalofthisphenomenon.Butit standsinstarkcontrasttothesimplesummeroutingsandactivitiesofmyearlyyears. IwasbornandraisedinNewHaven,Connecticut,whoseharborislocatedonthenorthernshoreofLong IslandSound,acoastlinethatservedastheprimarysiteofoursummerplaygroundactivities."Vacations" thenhardlyresembledtoday'sextensiveexcursions,asourswereorganizedassingular"daysatthe beach."Thisusuallymeanta30-minuteridebyopen-airtrolleytoLighthousePointPark,apublicbeach runbythecitywhich,accordingtoWikipedia,was"apopulartouristdestinationduringtheRoaring Twenties,attractingluminariesoftheperiodsuchasBabeRuthandTyCobb."Despitethemanypassing years,Icanstillclearlyrecallthefamiliarsmellofthesaltyseaairthatheraldedourarrivalandstirred ouranticipationoftheday'sjoysthatlayahead.TheparkcertainlywasnotonparwithAtlanticCityor ConeyIsland,withtheirteemingboardwalks,ferriswheels,gamingboothsandtastyfast-foodtreats. Rather,thepark'shumbleofferingsincludedthesimplebasicsofsunandsurf,accompaniedbythe LighthousePointCarousel,whichwasbuiltin1916,asolitaryfrozencustardstand,andthesouvenir snapshotopportunitiesofferedbytheFiveMilePointLighthouse,constructedin1847,andviewsofLong IslandSound. Otherthanthemildlyannoyinginstancesofsunburnandjellyfishstings,ourseasideidyllswerelargely uneventful.Therewas,however,oneepisodewhichstilllingersinmymemoryasalastingreminderof theperilsofoverzealousthriftinesswhencombinedwithyouthfulindiscretion.OnonesuchtripIelected towearmybathingsuitundermystreetclothestoavoidhavingtorentabathhouse.Fullofprideatmy clevernessandsmugwiththeknowledgeIhadpocketedawhoppingsavingsoffiftycents,Ihadalready peeledoffbothshirtandpantsbeforerealizingInowhadnowheretostowthem.Applyingmylimited powersofadolescentreasoningtothesituationathand,andusingthelifeguard'sstandasalandmark,I quicklyburiedmybelongingsinthesand.Mymotherandsisterfrowneddisapprovinglybutremained silent.Wesetoursightsonthebeckoningwaves,withthoughtsonlyoftheenjoyableafternoonahead. Asthesunatlonglastslidtowardthehorizon,mymotherannouncedthatitwastimetocallita day.ReturningtothespotonthebeachwhereIthoughtIhadhiddenmytreasure,Ibecame confused.Thelifeguard'sstandhadbeenmoved,leavingnotraceofitsformerlocation.Afteran extendedsearchwithoutsuccessanddarknessquicklyapproaching,Iwasforcedtosurrenderbothmy clothesandmydignity.Timehasnotdimmedmyrecollectionofthefeelingofembarrassmentthat engulfedmeasIboardedthetrolleythatdayandmettheindignantstaresoftheothermothers,the gigglesoflittlegirlsandthesneeringlooksoffellowyoungboys.Thatsingularlymemorabletrolleyride seemedtolastforever.It'sonlygratitudeIfeelnowasIthinkbackaboutthatearlytrauma,knowinghow trulyfortunateitisthatlife,insuchsmall,innocuousways,teachesussomeofitsmostusefullessons.
