able ending is usually used if a complete root word can be heard

Year 5 spellings
Summer 1
This half term, year 5 will be learning more about word endings particularly –able and –ible.
The –able ending is usually used if a complete root word can be heard before it (such as changeable) or if there
is a related word ending in –ation (such as adorable/ adoration). The –ible ending is usually used when a complete
root word cannot be heard (such as possible).
We will also be learning about adding suffixes to –fer words.
The r is doubled is the –fer is still stress when a suffix is added (such as referring, referral). The r is not
doubled if the –fer is no longer stressed (such as reference).
Each week, there are 3 groups of spellings. Challenge 1 spellers should focus on the red group of spellings;
Challenge 2 spellers on the red and orange groups; and Challenge 3 on all three coloured groups.
